Dusty or Dennis

We have our little baby due in 4 months time so we're in no rush about names we're just curious..

for a little boy we both love the name Dusty. We think it's so cute and you don't really ever hear of it. However, me and DH aren't too sure about the long version which is Dustin. We like it but we don't love it, whereas we LOVE Dusty. And we're not sure if people would just assume that his name was Dustin?

Another name in the running is Dennis with the NN Denny. We love the long version of Dennis and think it's a really sweet name which is why we're so stuck on what to do because we really do love Dusty.

Any opinions of advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you all :)

Douglas / Dougie is so much better!!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 04/10/2021 21:08

Dusty Springfield’s name was Mary! I’ve only ever heard Dusty as an old-fashioned nickname for someone with the surname Miller.

boomwhacker · 04/10/2021 21:09

Dusty bin here too...

abitfunny · 04/10/2021 21:12

You’re all so bloody boring and simple minded. OP Dusty is great. It has a nice ring to it and people won’t forget it. Even those who don’t like it won’t say it to your face anyway! All these comments about grown adults with unusual names is nonsense. I’ve never had any issues and have a fairly out there name. If anything I’m glad I don’t have the same name as 2/3/10 of my friends or colleagues (yawn)

Sandsnake · 04/10/2021 21:14

Another for the dislike Dusty camp - sorry! But if you’re set on it then I think you could use Dunstan, with Dusty as a family nickname but Dunstan for every day / school etc.

I quite like Dougie / Douglas!

JennyMcollin · 04/10/2021 21:23

@lynntheyresexpeople

Please don't. Imagine meeting a 30 year old dusty
those are awful names and they would get bullied, you should call it Gareth or callum, true alpha names
user1493494961 · 04/10/2021 21:25

Busty Dusty.

Piggy42 · 04/10/2021 21:27

Douglas/Dougie is much better.

IM0GEN · 04/10/2021 21:28

Dougie / Douglas is much better than the other two.

Your son may not appreciate a cute name when he’s 25.

MarchingOnTogether · 04/10/2021 21:29

I like Dennis, there's actually a toddler in our family with the name!!

Hyacinth88 · 04/10/2021 21:33

I don't like any of your choices.. But your baby your choice.
Dougie I find hard is it.. Doogie or duggie I'm never sure

Mollymalone123 · 04/10/2021 21:35

Dusty bin
Please don’t call him that

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 04/10/2021 21:39

@Fivebeanchilli

Douglas/Dougie is nice. Dennis/Dennie is fine. Dusty is awful.
This.

Douglas is a perfectly normal name in Scotland (though I'm not up to date with baby names, tbh).

DustyMaiden · 04/10/2021 21:41

Very stylish

ufucoffee · 04/10/2021 21:45

There is a reason why you don't hear of boys called Dusty. It's awful. Please don't do it.

orangeautumnleaves · 04/10/2021 21:45

Is this for real?

Dusty just don't for a boy or a girl!

Dennis god no!

Dougie, still god no!

pinkgin1 · 04/10/2021 21:46

Neither.. nopeee

Poshjock · 04/10/2021 21:55

So many Dustys in the military. All the Millers or any surname that sounds like Miller. And Stores staff are all called Dusty (dusty shelves). It’s not really a selling point for the name and when he’s an adult everyone will wonder/ask what his real name is.

Dennis is a nice name. I know a few, and Dennys too. Worth a resurgence.

Dougie/Douglas (doogie/duggie/doog/dug all acceptable) is a very common name in Scotland. Strong name.

ChrissyPlummer · 04/10/2021 21:57

All of those are the names of a few of my neighbours dogs.

Dennis is the best. Dusty isn’t a name. Dusty Springfield was given the nickname as she was a tomboy and used to play football with boys.

Hotdayinjuly · 04/10/2021 21:59

I kind of like it. I would use Dustin though, I think in the US it would raise no eye brows but sounds a bit unfamiliar as a given name.

KezzabellaB · 04/10/2021 22:00

Oh OP.... No..... Just..... No!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 04/10/2021 22:01

Dustin is a character in Stranger Things, I nearly called our puppy Dusty!

It wouldn't be a nice name to saddle a kid with.

whattodo2019 · 04/10/2021 22:05

Are you serious????? Bloody awful names- poor kid

ChipsNCurry · 04/10/2021 22:14

Dusty = covered in dust.

Why would you call a baby that?
It's not even a proper name, it's a nickname- Dusty Springfield's name was Mary!

Dennis is better. But to me it's a 50-60 year old man's name!

RaRaRabbit · 04/10/2021 22:22

Dusty.... please. No.

I dislike all these names but, Dusty is just awful.
