I know of a Nessie, but I think she's a Vanessa (friend of a friend's wean type thing).

I actually like Agnes but I had an aunt Agnes who was very dashing when I was little.

Love Annis too and I also know an Anness - she says it stress on the A so AH-ness, which would absolutely lend itself to Ness or Nessie.

@HoldingTheDoor

Agnes? Sweet Mother of all that is holy! It's one of the ugliest names ever.
Yep. Ugly af.

Agnes is fine. Nessie is not lol. But it's your child, up to you Smile

KingofQueens · 27/08/2021 00:28

I like the name Agnes, but think I would use Ness as the nn.

However, I love Agnes pronounced the French way - so more like An-nyes. (It's hard to write it phonetically in English).

villamariavintrapp · 27/08/2021 08:59

It's horrible. And pronouncing it like anis is problematic too! What about innes? Inez? Anya? Greta? All lovely (IMO).

Ikeameatballs · 27/08/2021 10:05

I don’t mind the full name but I don’t like Aggie or Nessie and I think it would be hard to avoid both as nicknames.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 27/08/2021 12:13

Love the name Agnes. We actually met a baby Agnes the other day at baby group and thought it was adorable

marieantoinehairnet · 27/08/2021 14:45

I like Agnes, I don't like Nessie, let your child choose their own NN when the time is right

LowlandLucky · 27/08/2021 19:57

My Aunt is Agnes but is called Nan. Nessa would be better

Sorry, see that’s already been suggested but it is a lovely version

Seeing as Ada and Ivy are both hot on here, Agnes seems quite inoffensive! My French teacher was called Agnes and she was about 90, I think, so it must be due a comeback.

I do have a soft spot for Agnes because of David Copperfield.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/08/2021 20:32

Agnes nn Nessie is a whore in a novel I read recently. Don't mind Agnes itself but Nessie is a no.

PaolaDiLorenzo · 27/08/2021 20:46

Nice to see my hideously fogey, old fashioned name is suggested for a comeback. I don't think it was ever in fashion to begin with Smile

Cindie943811A · 28/08/2021 23:21

The older English version of Agnes is Annis, which I feel is a gentler sounding name

Rockmehardplace · 28/08/2021 23:34

Agnes is one of the harshest ugliest sounding names out there IMO. My cousin is called Agnes and changed her name as soon as she was able to.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 29/08/2021 03:21

@torchh I loved Nessie!!!! Agnes - but I got totally ridiculed on here! Peolple we're so cruel. Like waaaaaay over the top!! We didn't use it but I imagine the name we went with would get a very similar reaction! You have to go with what you love! Family weren't sure on our name but now they love it and she is her name x

CakesOfVersailles · 29/08/2021 03:24

I didn't use to like Agnes but it has grown on me over the years. It's a solid name.

The Agnes I know in real life is nicknamed Nancy which I like.

VanishingAct · 29/08/2021 04:22

Agnes - ugly

Nessie - ugly

Nancy - quite nice really

NoWhey · 29/08/2021 10:59

No. Awful.

User8765461 · 29/08/2021 11:31

Agnes sounds lovely when pronounced the French way (sort of 'an-yes'), but not so keen on the English pronunciation.

Decide the short version you want before the DC starts preschool or they will be Aggie forever.

User8765461 · 29/08/2021 11:33

Also, sorry but in my mind Nessie makes me think of the annoying name for the Loch Ness monster.
