I know a teenage Nessie. Her real name is Vanessa but has always been known as Nessie and is happy with it.

FartnissEverbeans · 26/08/2021 20:07

I knew a teenaged Agnes who absolutely pulled it off. It was so chic on her. She went by Aggie.

elfran · 26/08/2021 20:20

I love Agnes, I think it's quite stylish actually. It was on our list for DD but we went with something else (and I don't think they work together as sisters so alas, I won't ever have an Agnes). I like Nessie as a nn actually, more so than Aggie which I'm not keen on.

SionnachRua · 26/08/2021 20:24

Oh god no. Dreadful dumpy, staid and matronlike name.

Chardonnay wins hands down Grin

lochmaree · 26/08/2021 20:36

I like Agnes but I don't think I'd be brave enough to call one of my children that. Its a strong name 😊

We had Rhionna (Ree oh na) at the top of our list for a girl.

Olivess · 26/08/2021 20:38

Love it and have in fact called my daughter Agnes. I think it is a strong, elegant name. It also really suits her. I get a lot of compliments but I do realise it’s a bit of a marmite name.

twiggie · 26/08/2021 20:42

My daughter is Agnes, age 5. She loves it, though won’t let anyone shorten it. She likes that there’s nobody else in her year school with the same name.
I was almost put off going with Agnes as I don’t like Aggie. But nobody calls her Aggie, and where it’s not a long name, its not like people are itching to shorten it anyway.

EishetChayil · 26/08/2021 20:44

Nessie doesn't really make sense as a nickname because the -nes part of Agnes is pronounced more like "nuss".

Mommybunny · 26/08/2021 20:44

I always thought Nancy was a derivative of Ann/e?

Anyway, I think Agnes could be quite chic as long as it doesn’t go the way of Maisie or Ottilie.

Pemba · 26/08/2021 20:45

It's a very harsh sounding name - it's that 'ag' sound, like in dagger, aggro.

I think the French pronunciation is nice, but not the English.

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 26/08/2021 20:46

Agnes is awful. Ugly sounding and Aggie is worse.

HairyMaryMyCanary · 26/08/2021 20:48

Nessie? The monster? Oh dear.

breadfortea · 26/08/2021 20:49

Agnes is beautiful.

mlj123 · 26/08/2021 20:53

Agnes reminds me of Mrs browns boys and Nessie/ Nessa reminds me of Gavin and Stacey. It's the first thing that pops into my head when you say those names

Viviennemary · 26/08/2021 20:53

Nessie is dreadfull. They will call her loch Ness at school. Agnes is fine but not the nickname.

Topseyt · 26/08/2021 20:57

Nancy is lovely.

I'm not keen on Agnes. Nessie to me would be the Loch Ness monster (and I am not even Scottish).

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/08/2021 20:59

Agnes, nice.

Nessie, just no. Why make your child suffer.

MerryMarigold · 26/08/2021 21:05

I like Agnes and always have. I think it's soft sounding! I like the Polish version too. And it reminds me of Despicable Me's Agnes, who is adorable.
Not keen on Nessie (Messy Nessie), sounds a bit of a doggie name.

MacSmirving · 26/08/2021 21:10

My grandmother was named Agnes but was always called Nan for short. I also had a great aunt named Agnes who was always called Nancy. I rather like it but possibly for sentimental reasons.

ShinyHappySummers · 26/08/2021 21:15

Ness short for Vanessa is better. IMO.

annacondom · 26/08/2021 21:15

I really don't like it. I find it ugly. But I had a great-aunt Agg and I only found out recently that Agnes was her middle name - her real first name was Charlotte! Mad. I'd choose Charlotte over Agnes any day.

Heronwatcher · 26/08/2021 21:16

Monster. No.

Heronwatcher · 26/08/2021 21:18

But I did have a friend called Vanessa, Ness for short which I liked.
My favourite names for girls at the moment are Mary, Jessie (marmite i know), Dorothy (probably really popular), Morven and Marianne.

ancientgran · 26/08/2021 21:18

@PaolaDiLorenzo

I had an elderly relation called Agnes. She absolutely hated her name, especially if it was shortened to Aggie. She stopped using it and went by her much nicer middle name. It's very harsh sounding .
I wonder if we are related. I was just going to post the exact same thing.
milkyawayday · 26/08/2021 21:18

Senga! 🤣

Says it all. Are we running out of old lady names to make trendy? This is scraping the barrel now.

Theres literally only Agnes, Edith and Maud left to revive

Agatha is better isnt it?
