Nessa is a lovely name, maybe an option? I had an Aunt Nessie (short for Agnes). She was a bit of a dragon for sure Grin

KillerFlamingo · 26/08/2021 18:06

Nessie sounds cute for a baby but imagine if she goes through a plump phase in her teen/preteen, that would be a bully's wet dream. Sad

MumofAgnes · 26/08/2021 18:06

As a mother or an Agnes I love it. It dose not sound harsh at all. She’s called Aggie or Agnes by us. She’s only 4 so isn’t aware of names yet but she loves it so far. It’s a beautiful traditional name which suits my Aggie. Some family members pulled faces before she was born but I told them where to go. I get lots of compliments on her name now.

I also have a cousin nicknamed Ness, Nessie. Her name is unusual, I’ve never met anyone with her name so I don’t want to say it as it’s too outing. But she’s late 20s and loves her name.

I was keen, DH said no though.

  1. You can't control nicknames. That's up to your child and their peers.
Nessie is Scotland is absolutely the Loch Ness Monster and nothing else.
  1. Annis (sounds quite pretty) is the trad NE Scottish pronunciation of Agnes.
  1. A previous poster has said, in Scotland among the older generation 'Nancy' is sometimes used for Agnes
  1. I actually quite like Agnes. Has nice associations: gentleness and peace. French 'Ann-yess' is even better, and links with the trad NE Scottish pronunciation mentioned above.

I love Agnes. It was on my shortlist for DD3, who ended up looking like a Sylvie.

P.s I would never ask for opinion on baby names on MN, people are cruel and rip name choices to shreds here. If you like something just go with it, fuck what others think.

BadlyArrangedToasties · 26/08/2021 18:09

I have an Irish friend named Agnes but she goes by Nessa. In fact, it wasn’t until her wedding that I learned her actual name was Agnes! I know an an Agatha nn Aggie. Could be a nickname for Agnes as well?

ApolloandDaphne · 26/08/2021 18:09

My DM is Agnes but she has been called Nancy her entire life. It is apparently a shortening for Agnes.

HoldingTheDoor · 26/08/2021 18:09

Yes it's worse than Chardonnay. Not that I'd care to be called either but Agnes has such a harsh, ugly sound.

Well, yes that is rather the point. If you ask for opinions then you're going to get them. There's no point in asking if everyone is going to give the same bland, neutral response.

What's wrong? You sound furious

Nancy is much nicer.

CliffsofMohair · 26/08/2021 18:13

I hear Nessa I think what’s occurin’

Hate Agnes but love the Polish version Agnieska and the French Agnes

MargotEmin · 26/08/2021 18:14

I don't understand where the harsh connotations come from, it sounds soft to me? Reminds me of the French brand Agnes B.

Beautiful name, I love it.

Melliferous · 26/08/2021 18:14

Agnes is bad but Nessie is also bad.

Nancy is lovely.

I'm far from furious. I'm enjoying a Whispa or two, as we speak so I'm actually quite content. I'm just saying to the other poster that there is little point in this section, or in asking if people can't give their honest responses.

Scautish · 26/08/2021 18:15

I love it. My wonderful fantastic gran was Agnes, nn Nessie. She was an amazing person which humour, courage and a whole load of love. Some of you may think it’s ugly and a monster name, but my Gran, Nessie, was the absolute best. Miss her every single day.

A strong but beautiful name.

HoldingTheDoor · 26/08/2021 18:16

It's the "ag" sound that makes it sound so harsh to me. It's not an attractive sound. The French pronunciation is much nicer.

Yes, it's the Ag sound. Agnes and Agatha both sound harsh to me.

I wouldn't want to be Agnes or Nessie. I was at school with an Agnes but she changed her name to Senga (Agnes backwards).

I know a Senga who’s real name is Agnes. Wonder if it’s the same one. Tbh don’t think Senga is much of an improvement. Sorry OP.

ofwarren · 26/08/2021 18:51

Oooh, Nancy is lovely!
