Jesus the reactions on here! What about wren, Robin...who decides? There’s children named after flowers birds ect.

Op I like the name, it’s original and beautiful.

TatianaBis · 28/06/2021 23:57

I wouldn’t but the reactions here when Bear, Fox, Wren, Robin, Raven, Paloma are fairly uncommon are way OTT.

TatianaBis · 29/06/2021 00:04

Common obviously not uncommon.

LuluJakey1 · 29/06/2021 00:09

It's not an attractive name, never mind the link to a large white bird with a long neck and orange beak. Why not 'Goose' ?

Starlightstarbright1 · 29/06/2021 00:10

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

only if your surname is Lake
🤣🤣🤣🤣
BackforGood · 29/06/2021 00:14

I don't like it, as I don't like any names that have become more well known as names that are actually nouns, but the OP is right.

Why is she being ridiculed for 'Swan' when people use

Robin
Willow
Rowan
Sky
Summer
Autumn
Poppy
Rose
Tulip
Tuesday
River
Wren

etc.,etc.,etc ?

I mean. I don't like any of them, but I don't see anything more ridiculous about Swan than any of these other similar names.

DontDoThatGeorge · 29/06/2021 00:28

Wren is nice.

Swan is fucking ridiculous.

Who knows why.

Your hormones are thinking for you though, OP.
Back to the bumper book of names with you Grin

BrownEyedGirl80 · 29/06/2021 08:00

I like Dove but Swan is awful

lottiegarbanzo · 29/06/2021 08:06

Oh also, young children often struggle with a 'S-consonant' sound, so will say Shwan for a few years.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/06/2021 08:08

So: 'My name's Shwan', 'Your name's Sian?' 'Sean?' 'Shawn?'

Guavafish · 29/06/2021 08:24

I think Swan is fine

Different and unique!

DasPepe · 29/06/2021 08:28

Sometimes people have used animal names because of the “characteristics” of the said animal or plant.

Swans may be beautiful but they are also aggressive and territorial. They don’t have a beautiful birdsong.” To swan” means to move about or go somewhere in a casual, irresponsible, or ostentatious way.
It’s also an acronym of a medical condition.

So basically people will associate the name with many different characteristics and it won’t be the same ones as you / the same as you would intend.

Of course people who know the child will get used it, but she may struggle in life having to overcome this with every new person. It’s exhausting and can prime you for a negative outlook, because it’s both unusual and not an actual name.

You can always use it as a middle / second name of course.

GingerBeverage · 29/06/2021 08:56

Is it any worse than Tyger?

PattyPan · 29/06/2021 09:06

Wren and Robin are at least lovely songbirds. Swans are vicious fuckers. There was a swan in Cambridge called Mr Asbo and he had a son called Asboy because they used to attack people on the river!

TatianaBis · 29/06/2021 09:21

Swans are very beautiful.

Foxes are a menace that kill small animals for sport and empty dustbins across the street.

Bears kill people.

Doesn’t stop the popularity of the names.

These are ridiculous reasons trying to out the OP off.

PattyPan · 29/06/2021 09:26

Fox and bear are bloody awful as names though. Bear is cringe enough as a nickname (eg Henry Bear 🤮) let alone a given name.

QuimKardashian · 29/06/2021 09:29

Lol!!

TatianaBis · 29/06/2021 09:34

I agree but be consistent at least.
lottiegarbanzo · 29/06/2021 10:03

Swans are aggressive, territorial and associated with rape.

Robins though, are massive philanderers. Anyone who thinks they're just cute, friendly little things needs to read about the sex lives of robins.

Fistful · 29/06/2021 10:48

Robins are incredibly territorial and aggressive, too, and the red breast is a threat colour, not a cute Christmas card-themed thing. Mind you, duck sex (gang rape, corkscrew penises, toothed vaginas etc) is probably the most disturbing bird sex fact.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/06/2021 10:58

Yes, definitely don't call your child Duck. (Drake!).

Snog · 29/06/2021 11:21

Dove
Piper
Raven
Jay
Linnet
Martin
Merlin
Falcon
Kite
Skylark
Swift
I think looking to the natural world for baby names is a nice idea.

PattyPan · 29/06/2021 11:25

Dove
Merlin
Falcon
Kite
Skylark
Swift

Please can we not give OP terrible suggestions? No one should have to endure having one of these as a name.

CafeMochaVodkaValiumLate · 29/06/2021 11:27

I really like it :)

We all have unusual names in my family (my son is an animal name and I'm a fruit) and funnily enough, children don't tend to give a shit what you're called. It's the parents who seem to struggle with something out of the ordinary.

IToldYouIWasCummins · 29/06/2021 11:31

Hmmmm

No.
