DefinitelyMaybeBaby · 10/01/2021 14:39

Baby girl due in a few weeks and we are getting closer to a name but not there yet! I did post a shortlist a couple of months ago and feedback was helpful so thank you.

(I will caveat this by saying our taste is very much old fashioned names which we know won't be for everyone!)

Middle name will be Juniper with all the first name options.

Norah
Nancy
Mavis
Dorothy (Dot/Dottie)
Winnifred

I like Norah and Nancy.

Not keen on Dorothy but Dot/ Dottie is cute. Don’t like Mavis or Winnifred at all.

Incidentally I love the name Juniper - personally I would use it as the first name and have one of the ‘granny’ names as the middle name.

TerrifiedOfTrying4No2 · 10/01/2021 15:57

I has a Mabel last year. I still love it but I chose it because it was one of the old lady names that hadn’t been mentioned a million times but now it’s come back hard and I know 3 people locally who have had a Mabel in the last few months😩

If I have another girl potential names will be:
Penelope/Penny
Dorothy/Dotty
Iris
Edith
Vivian
Audrey or Aubrey
Elspeth.

LurkingStill · 10/01/2021 15:58

I like Alma.

From your list Nancy or Norah

TempsPerdu · 10/01/2021 16:03

I love granny names (although personally I prefer to call them ‘vintage’! Wink) But I have to say that I’m not a particular fan of any of the ones your list apart from maybe Nancy. Hearing lots of people mention Mavis lately but I have a very elderly and quite formidable aunt with that name and can’t quite get past that association. Norah seems to get a lot of love on here, but I just can’t se it as an attractive name.

My favourite vintage names are Greta (DD’s name), Frida/Frieda, Sylvia, Daphne and Iris. Juniper makes a lovely middle name by the way.

SpilltheTea · 10/01/2021 16:04

I really like Mavis, but DP wasn't keen.

Sarahandduck18 · 10/01/2021 16:06

I prefer Norah from your list.

Annette
Marilyn
Cynthia

Sylvia

Jennifer Juniper, wasn't that in a Donovan or somebody's song?
Judith, Christine, Lilias, Suzanne, Anne

Nancy! It’s beautiful and one of my favourite names.

Dd2 was very nearly a Nancy - was between that and Elspeth. Sad I won’t be able to use it as she is my 4th and last.

Whiskysoda · 10/01/2021 16:19

I’ve always thought Nancy to be a very pretty name.

Pinotpleasure · 10/01/2021 16:19

There is a very old church just a few hundred feet from our house. On one of the gravestones is a name which I really like: Albertina (possibly because of the popularity of Prince Albert?)

My grannies (now long dead) were born in the early 1900s-1910s and their names were Florence and Alice. Their daughters were named: Iris, Edna, Alice and Rosemary (my mum, now aged 81).

Other granny names are:

Clarissa or Clara
Marigold
Vivienne
Rita
Lillian /Lilian
Pamela
Doreen
Eileen
Jane
Henrietta
Hannah
Sybil
Barbara
Jean
Patricia
Joan
Clementine
Enid
Perpetua (aka Peppy)
Hermione

Bitbusyattheminute · 10/01/2021 16:25

Mary.

Most of the women in my family tree were called Mary or Kathleen, depending on whether they were Welsh or Irish side.

Apart from my grandmother 's sister, born on Xmas day and called Mary Nadolig (Mary Christmas).

JollyJosiah · 10/01/2021 16:29

Dorothy Juniper is lovely.

WizardOfAus · 10/01/2021 16:29

Winnifred Juniper just rolls off the tongue.

CheltenhamLady · 10/01/2021 16:39

Evelyn or Grace?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/01/2021 16:44

I'm generally not fond of "granny chic" names (I find they date too easily) so I'm not keen on any of your choices OP, sorry. Vintage/retro/dated names that I do think have nice sounds are - Cora, Sylvia, Adeline, Dahlia, Freda/Frederica, Flora, Clara, Mary, Christabel, Emmeline, Iris, Florence, Evelyn, Vivien, Ada, Patricia, Lillian, Sybil, Jane, Anne, Greta, Theresa, Millicent, Audrey.
