Sophie - boring or classic?

We really like the name Sophie but I’m concerned that it has been too overused in recent years. What are your thoughts please?

I think it's a pretty and classic name, but I don't know many Sophie's either my age or children.

PoppiesinOctober · 31/12/2020 10:04

Classic but very boring. I know about 8.

trilbydoll · 31/12/2020 10:05

I've got a Sophie. It's very popular, as is Sophia, I can think of another 6 between nursery and school and she is only in Y1. Tbh I would find that irritating in her shoes but we couldn't find another name we liked as much. They do become their name though, I can't imagine her being called anything else, but that would be the case whatever we called her!

PoodleMoth · 31/12/2020 10:05

Personally boring, seems to be becoming more popular again. But if you love it go for it!

sandandso · 31/12/2020 10:13

Boring, but all the "now" names are boring too, by virtue of their now-ness. I'd imagine Sophie to be age 20-35, so perhaps it's quite refreshing on a baby (though I know the stats say it's still pretty popular).

chickensoup23 · 31/12/2020 10:15

Boring. Sophia much nicer

Sup1979 · 31/12/2020 10:15

Classically boring

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 31/12/2020 10:15

Classic.

But I love classic (boring) names...my son's shortlist of names was basically a list of Thomas The Tank Engine characters.

Some will say it's boring but it will stand the test of time.

Enko · 31/12/2020 10:36

Boring

MimiDaisy11 · 31/12/2020 10:59

I really like it and prefer it to the more popular Sophia. If it hadn't been so popular I might have considered it more.

DalgonaToGo · 31/12/2020 11:45

The majority of classics are somewhat boring and beautiful.

Pretty much every "classic" name brought up on here for an opinion will receive a mixture of "beautiful, timeless, can't go wrong" comments and then "bland, boring, bit predictable" comments.

Part of their appeal is that classics can be found across classes and professions. It wouldn't be hard to imagine a lawyer or dustbin man called Daniel. Or an eyelash extension technician or museum curator called Lucy.
Just look at Googleable Sophies:
Sophie Dahl
Sophie Price
Sophie Hermann
Sophie Germain
Etc.

Then there are lots of names that are not classic at all and are currently very popular, therefore people are starting to find them boring but once they've ceased being trendy for a while they might lose some of that boring factor.

Classics will always be caught somewhere between absolutely timeless and beautiful - & - dull and safe.

In terms of 'Sophie' specifically - I really like it. It is very popular atm, though.

Shmithecat2 · 31/12/2020 11:46

Both classic AND boring. But better than Sophia, which is dreadful.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/12/2020 11:49

I think both, too.

finallychangedmyusername · 31/12/2020 12:11

Absolute classic and lovely, international name. I think of Sophie in the BFG.

PepsiArcade · 31/12/2020 12:55

Another who thinks it’s both classic and boring.

DalgonaToGo · 31/12/2020 13:04

Just wanted to add that 'Sophie' is one of my all time favourite names ever (probably because it's my mums name and she filled our childhood with love, play, thoughtfulness and imagination). It has a gentle, whispering sound to it, it will stand the test of time and definitely suit all ages.

lavenderlou · 31/12/2020 13:06

Classic and has remained relatively popular for decades so won't date badly. I prefer Sophia myself but think it's a bit more "of the moment".

popandsqueak · 31/12/2020 13:08

My daughter has this name but it's spelt Sofie. I love the name and the spelling makes it a bit different

becca3210 · 31/12/2020 13:10

I think it is a classic and lovely. Go for it OP. You won't regret it.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 31/12/2020 13:10

Not one I’d choose but a classic which will always be lovely. I like the classics and not all these dreadful trendy names that you see on here sometimes. I just feel sorry for some of the kids who I know are going to be lumbered with something dreadful.

Whenwillow · 31/12/2020 13:13

I like it a lot. If you like the sound of it, use it.

PlantPotting · 31/12/2020 14:03

Classic. Timeless. Not boring

SnowdropFox · 31/12/2020 16:31

Lost in a sea of Sophie and Sophias here. Not my cup of tea.

chrismi · 31/12/2020 17:30

Great classic name, not boring. Means "wisdom", "wise" which is not a bad thing nowadays Wink

inappropriateraspberry · 31/12/2020 17:32

I don't know any! I really like it.
