Please don't use weird spellings, that's the most important thing IMO.

ChanklyBore · 16/12/2020 17:08

I think I would go with Polly, Mabel and Jackson as other have said, Posie I think could also be Posy like Ballet Shoes. Lockie on its own ive not seen before, I’d assume short for Lachlan/Lochlan maybe.

I know a few Talia’s but Thalia makes me think of thali...having said that there were 65 little Thalias born last year.

Nuala is cute, I only know one.

Iris is a top 100 name, definitely not unusual. Lovely, but popular.

If you like those, and prefer unusual choices, why not look outside the top 500. Here are some you might like.

Ember, Nala, Kayla, Elara, Margo, Elissa, Lilith, Dina, Dahlia
Caspar, Heath, Nolan, Emil, Silas, Deacon, Wade, Devon

Or something from outside the top 1000?

Clover, Noemi, Tegan, Zelda, Cassia, Coral, Marcy, Opal
Ocean, Saul, Colton, Forest, Indiana, Nile, Mateus, Dustin, Clement

Level75 · 16/12/2020 17:11

If you use those weird spellings people will assume you and, by extention, your child are stupid. Sorry, wouldn't tell anyone that in RL but I guess that's what mumsnet is for.

beautifulclouds · 16/12/2020 17:15

I like Thalia - isn't it pronounced Thu - LEE - ah?

Agree with PP about Jaxson - that's an awful spelling. Lachlan nn Lockie is sweet.

florascotia2 · 16/12/2020 18:02

I believe the ancient Greeks - where the name comes from - would have said something like THA-lia. The name begins with a theta, which is normally a fairly soft 'th'.

But in several modern European languages, 'TH' is pronounced as 'T'. Any Greek-speakers here to help, please?

Lockie for Lachlan is - in Scotland - just plain wrong. Sorry.

VenusClapTrap · 16/12/2020 18:06

I thought Thalia was pronounced TARlia.

SameToo · 16/12/2020 18:11

The spellings are awful. Why do pull you spell it wrong? It’s not creative.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 16/12/2020 18:15

The girls names are all lovely but the spellings are awful.

Not much of a fan of any of the boys names.

KirstenBlest · 16/12/2020 18:20

GIRLS:
Pollie - Polly is nice
Posie -Posy is a nicer spelling
Maebel - Mabel
Thalia - is is said as Tahlia?
Iris - fine
Nuala - I only know one and she says it as Noo-ah-la. I think it's more like Noola

BOYS:
Jaxson - Jackson or Jaxon are better spellings.
Lockie -no
Reid - no

florascotia2 · 16/12/2020 18:27

Venus

The Greek (ancient and modern) alphabet has a symbol (also used in maths) which stands for 'Th'. That's what Thalia begins with.

As I said, in certain modern languages, but not Greek, Th becomes T.

Changeythenamey · 16/12/2020 18:29

Pollie - I personally dislike this name but there is nothing wrong with it. It just seems a bit weak. Must have known one at some point.
Posie - cute.
Maebel - lovely. Would be spelled as Mabel but if you can deal with it, all good.
Thalia - I like this a lot. Some people might give you a ‘thaaalia’ or ‘tally-a’ pronunciation but neither are offensive.
Iris - beautiful name. Uncommon but easy to pronounce.
Nuala - lovely and underrated in my mind. Sure to be the only one in the class.

BOYS:

Jaxson - the spell makes it unappealing to me. Jaxon or Jackson is better. Some class associations which I don’t buy into but I think they do exist.
Lockie - short for lauchlin or lorcan? On it’s own it’s a bit of a nickname.
Reid - this is a brilliant name. Unusual but strong.

LightDrizzle · 16/12/2020 18:32

I don’t like any of the boys names and please step away from younique spellings of names. You condemn the child to a lifetime of spelling their name out, receiving documents and mail incorrectly addressed, and being judged. It’s very snobby I know but unique spellings are widely associated with very young and/or poorly educated parents, basically because it is such a crap idea.
Your girls names are fine if you spell them conventionally.
It must be horrible reading all these nasty comments but that is both the downside and upside of posting here anonymously and before you’ve actually named your child, - people are being honest. You can ignore them, but none of us have any skin in the game.

If my daughter presented me with a new grandson named Jaxson, I’d not say a word against it, until I got back in the car with DH ...

TreacleHart · 16/12/2020 18:36

I know of a Kristofer who is now known as Christopher as an adult . They won't thank you as an adult trying ( too hard ) to do a ' trendy ' spelling.

scentedgeranium · 16/12/2020 18:40

It's not Lockie. It's Lachie.

pontiouspilates · 16/12/2020 18:40

Thalia, Iris and Nuala are nice. Polly (this spelling) is ok. Sorry, really don't like any of your boys names.

ivykaty44 · 16/12/2020 18:45

I like Nuala & Mabel

As others have said, don’t set your D.C. up for a life time of having to spell out there name - it’s tiresome

Jackson is ok but I’m not keen on surnames as first names, it’s like being at a boys public school where all the boys are addressed by their last name, frightfully posh

Thesearmsofmine · 16/12/2020 18:47

Pollie- I like Polly spelt properly
Posie- a bit cutesie for a grown woman
Maebel- I like Mabel
Thalia- it’s ok
Iris - probably my favourite of all
Nuala - I don’t like it, it sounds like a dogs name

BOYS:

Jaxon- dislike, use Jackson if you want to use it
Lockie- awful
Reid - awful

ivykaty44 · 16/12/2020 18:50

What about

Robert, strong name and underused
Gerald, strong name and not many about

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/12/2020 18:57

None of those of unusual as such I'd say less used with more unusual spellings. Not that there's anything wrong with non conventional spellings, but Don't use them to just make a name seem different. Use them simply because you like them. Eg Maebel is lovely but it sounds no different to Mabel when said out loud.

I quite like Lockie out of your boys names.
Reid is okay. I do like how it sounds. However in school when it's time for reading it'll be "Come on Reid, its time to read.!
I've never liked Jackson/Jaxson.

More ideas.
Loveday
Faraday
Fallon
Farrah
Lavinia.

Jazz
Cedric
Duke
Wilbur
Derry
Finbar
Tristan

EileenGC · 16/12/2020 19:48

Pollie 3/10. Spell it Polly if you must use this. I'm not very keen, but that could be because I'm Spanish and Pollie/Polly is very similar to the Spanish word for moth.
Posie 6/10. I quite like it.
Maebel 5/10. But please spell it Mabel.
Thalia 10/10. I absolutely love this. How do you pronounce the T? Hard T or TH as in thank you?
Iris 9/10. Another lovely name.
Nuala 2/10. What about Luana?

Jaxson 7/10, if spelt Jackson.
Lockie 1/10. Sounds too much like lock. Or lucky. It's a word, not a name.
Reid 1/10. I know a few people (all elderly) with this surname, and it's not one of those (like Jackson) that sounds cool as a name too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/12/2020 20:03

Thalia is gorgeous and Iris is pretty, if quite popular. Nuala and Polly (spelt like this) are okay, just not my taste. Posie (usually spelled Posy), is a nice nickname for Josephine, but not on it's own. I'm not keen on your other choices (Mabel, Jackson and Lockie) - they are trendy and will date. Reid is the best of the boys but still very surname. Other surname name types could be Maxwell, Jenson, Heath, Harrison, Sullivan, Sampson?

Firebird83 · 16/12/2020 20:07

I like Nuala and Reid

Crankley · 16/12/2020 20:27

GIRLS:

Pollie ok but Polly unless you want people to think you're illiterate.
Posie ok
Maebel Mabek for same reason as Polly
Thalia nice
Iris ok
Nuala nice

BOYS:

Jaxson Dislike but if you use it, use JacksonAwful
Lockie Horrible
Reid Best of the three

Mispellings don't equate to uneeque.

NewYearNewPlumbing · 16/12/2020 20:32

Posie
Thalia
Mabel
Polly
Iris
Nuala

BOYS:
No.
