@Awwlookatmybabyspider

None of those of unusual as such I'd say less used with more unusual spellings. Not that there's anything wrong with non conventional spellings, but Don't use them to just make a name seem different. Use them simply because you like them. Eg Maebel is lovely but it sounds no different to Mabel when said out loud.

I quite like Lockie out of your boys names.
Reid is okay. I do like how it sounds. However in school when it's time for reading it'll be "Come on Reid, its time to read.!
I've never liked Jackson/Jaxson.

More ideas.
Loveday
Faraday
Fallon
Farrah
Lavinia.

Jazz
Cedric
Duke
Wilbur
Derry
Finbar
Tristan

Yes totally understand what you mean however we just love the spellings like that as 1, my partners name is a 'common' name spelled different and he loves it and 2 Maebel as my MN is Mae, all the names we love and love for a reason, so thank you!

And true but Reid would be an adult for much longer then he would be a child so for that I wouldn't have that as an excuse not to name him thank, thanks for your suggestions X

@ivykaty44

I like Nuala & Mabel

As others have said, don’t set your D.C. up for a life time of having to spell out there name - it’s tiresome

Jackson is ok but I’m not keen on surnames as first names, it’s like being at a boys public school where all the boys are addressed by their last name, frightfully posh

I think most of the names I've liked have been surnames Fraser, Hunter, Beckett, Brady

It's so fascinating how people like different names, I see names like Christopher, Liam, Tom, Georgia, Ava, Sophia so so so boring! x

@scentedgeranium

It's not Lockie. It's Lachie.
Oh no hate that way of spelling it

@TreacleHart

I know of a Kristofer who is now known as Christopher as an adult . They won't thank you as an adult trying ( too hard ) to do a ' trendy ' spelling.
Definitely not trying to be trendy, just love them names I know a Kristofer too and gets called Kris, I don't think it's usually I work with the public and even names like Steven I ask how do I spell as there's a couple of names

@florascotia2

I believe the ancient Greeks - where the name comes from - would have said something like THA-lia. The name begins with a theta, which is normally a fairly soft 'th'.

But in several modern European languages, 'TH' is pronounced as 'T'. Any Greek-speakers here to help, please?

Lockie for Lachlan is - in Scotland - just plain wrong. Sorry.

A few people have said about Lachlan but I've never heard of it, been in England I don't think it's popular, so Lockie wouldn't be a nickname of a longer name

Fair warning, you may love unusual spellings but I know a grand total of 7 people who have non-standard spellings and all 7 hate constantly correcting/explaining. 6 of the 7 have specifically said they regret their parents choice in not using the more common/normal one.

Although names are about what you like and want for your child, you seem to really be forgetting that this is a name for them not for you.

I had a non-standard spelling. I changed it at 19 during my first formal job.

Saying that, I like Mabel and I don't think Polly is at all weak like some are saying. Of all the non-standard spellings you are considering I find Maebel the least ridiculous. Pollie is guaranteed to need utterly constant correction.

Iris is a nice name, Nuala is nice but given you don't recognise other Irish names or the longer Scottish version of one you are considering - I'd probably not use an Irish or Scottish name.

CallipygousElephant · 17/12/2020 02:43

On reflection, I think I actually quite like Reid - though it sounds like a surname (but plenty of first names do!).

SD1978 · 17/12/2020 03:29

Please don't saddle your child with a 'yooniqe' spelling to satisfy your own vagaries. There are generations of children out there having to explain their spellings thanks to ridiculous parents......don't be one. If you are both desperate to be original- change the spelling of your own name- and spend a month explaining it and having it misspelled........

YukoandHiro · 17/12/2020 03:36

Yes, please spell the name you choose correctly otherwise you're condemning the poor child to a life of frustrated call centre exchanges about daily admin and constant screw ups on it. I have an irregularly spelled surname and, though I wouldn't change it, I am sick of people getting it wrong despite me ALWAYS spelling it out.

Don't like any of these boys names.

mathanxiety · 17/12/2020 03:53

They're all pretty bad.

I like Reid, Polly, and Nuala.

Nuala is pronounced NOO-uh-la. The middle syllable/ schwa is almost inaudible.

FourPlatinumRings · 17/12/2020 04:08

People do tend to be snide about misspelled names- I remember my DM coming across a Jemma and afterwards remarking what a shame it was that her parents couldn't spell, poor girl. (I didn't even realise it was a misspelling at the time.)

Jackson/Jaxon/Jaxson is fairly common tbh. I prefer Jaxon myself- there's one in a book I read (can't remember the title) with a twin sister called Summer and I thought Jaxon was quite nice at the time, though couldn't use it myself.

I'm not a fan of Polly or Pollie personally- Polly to me is a dog's (or parrot's) name (much like Peter to you) and it also makes me think, 'Polly wanna cracker, waaaaaap.' The spelling to me is neither here nor there- they'll still be Polly S or whatever if there's a Polly in the class because they sound the same. We get all sorts in school- parents can, and do, create any random collection of letters and say it's pronounced X way.

Tbh I still can't get my head around Thalia rhyming with failure... Confused

Sandcastles09 · 17/12/2020 04:36

From you girls list I like...
Maebel
Thalia
Iris
And love...Nuala!

From your boys list I like...
Lockie
Reid ( this was on ours but the meaning is red haired and we were almost certainly having a brown haired child so didn’t use)

whattodo2019 · 17/12/2020 05:30

polly and Mabel spelt the correct way please....

Mammaaof · 17/12/2020 06:46

@laurielo I know at least 2 of each child from your list especially Jaxson there are so many of them! There are much more unusual and nicer names out there if someone told me there baby was called any of them is just think meh another one

The ones I know (and that isn't many, maybe 3 in my lifetime) pronounced it like that th-AY-lee-uh. The Talias I know (more of them) pronounce it TAR-lee-uh and I really like that. How do other Thalias pronounce it?
Enough4me · 17/12/2020 08:47

Iris
Fraser
None of the others.

Growingyou · 17/12/2020 08:53

I agree with pp that you should live the full name - Lachlan - then he can be Lockie or Locks or whatever he decides. I have a little 5 year old nephew who has always been Lachie but has decided now he wants everyone to call him Lach. I don't mind Reid but fear this would lead to teasing (when kids hear it as 'read'). Iris and Nuala are lovely.

GintyMcGinty · 17/12/2020 09:01

Mostly it looks like you can't spell. The girls names when spelled properly are all nice but I don't like any if the boys names.

Itsokthanks · 17/12/2020 09:11

When you say unusual I assume you mean the spelling rather than the actual name? I actually like all those perfectly normal girls names when spelt correctly. Don't make life difficult for your child.
I don't really like any of the boys names.

Buttercupcup · 17/12/2020 09:12

Just a note on alternative spelling I know you clearly like them but I have 2 good friends with different spellings of names (a Lucie and elisabeth) both get sick of describing themselves as ‘lucie with an ie’ and ‘Elisabeth with an s’. It does have an effect on the child as it is their name for life.

I know some people don't like it but as my partner has an unusual spelling he loves it and really doesn't mind having to tell people he does not know how to spell his first name, I think with all the really unusual names out there our names are fairly easy to manage with spelling, and none of the names would be pronounced different ie 'pollie will still be polly' and 'maebel work be Mabel' we both prefer the alternative ways of spelling ☺️

@Chilldonaldchill

Pollie - I love Polly. Pollie will always just be annoying because it's misspelt Posie - I don't dislike Posie because it reminds me of Posy in Ballet Shoes. I think it looks better spelt Posy though Maebel - Mabel is cute. Maebel looks illiterate Thalia - it's ok. I like it more in theory. I'm practice I don't because it rhymes with failure. I prefer Talia because it sounds better to me Iris - I love this but it's getting quite common Nuala - it's ok. I don't love the sound of it

Jaxson - I never understand this one. It's like spelling it Jacksson. It should be Jackson or Jaxon. I much prefer Jack though.
Lockie - not keen as a full name. Lachlan is better
Reid - I'm not a surname as first name fan but I quite like this one

I should have really decided on a better name for my thread as the names I've chosen aren't entirely unusual we just try and pick names that aren't in the top 10, but in some regions they may be really popular names Like Lockie in Scotland is popular for Lachlan and Nuala in Ireland, while we're in from ive never head of Lockie, Nuala and Posie's X
