Thalia - Faylia / Thaylia - easy to see how it could be pronounced that way, in which case it could sound like failure

laurielo · 17/12/2020 12:38

@SallyCinnamonYoureMyWorld

Why did you ask for our opinions op? Call your baby, when you have them, exactly what you want. There are no laws against calling them anything. Well as long as it isn't abusive. No need to ask on here if you are just going to take umbridge and say "my baby my roolz hun". You're right. Your baby, your choice. If you don't care what other people think, then don't ask on here please. Save us all a lot of wasted time. Thanks!
I was interested in what people thought, you didn't have to waste your time and comment Sally no one asked you too it's not the rules that you have to reply to threads Hmm

In no way have I said my names my rules, this thread is purely for interest reasons, I love our names we've chose, I wouldn't have put them on here if I thought I'd be upset with what people are saying that's all?

Please don't waste people's time with negative comments in future hun

@JumperooSue

I’m not that keen on Maebel or Pollie as the spelling but that’s purely personally choice. Mae, Mabel and Iris are all very popular where I live. I love Thalia and Posie.

I think Reid is really lovely, almost sounds quite classic without the popularity. The only ones I can really think of would be

Chester
Kit
Otto

I love your suggestions of Mae and Kit! Kit was on our list at one point don't know why we took it off

Jaxson screams chav to me
If he wants to be a chav then so be it, I look at Jaxson (Jax for short) as a cool, savvy name, thanks you for commenting Smile

@MimiDaisy11

Changing the spelling of names will hopefully one day break stigma's of those of your DM, my parents have usual 60's names and they love the fact our chosen names are a little bit different, just choice I suppose

Obviously you can choose to name them anything with a few limits but I'm not sure altering spellings will really do much to "break stigmas" since most people aren't on board. People mentioned the stereotype of it being young and uneducated people who do it. But personally, I think the biggest issue is that it comes off like you think you're being unique but you're failing at it because you haven't created anything. No one is fooled and can see it's just a common name you've gone for.

I work with the public a lot and when I ask a persons name I always ask how it's spelled if it's a name that can be alternative spelling, I feel like when I was growing up (in my 20's) a few people in my class had different names (Danika, Danica, Rosie, Rosy, Harry, Harrie) so I've always just thought it was common curtsy to ask how to spell a name or not take offence if it was spelled different, it would in no way make me believe there parents were uneducated or trying to be cool?

I know I'm not making the name Maebel or Pollie or Jaxson up, I just know the spellings aren't used a lot

I think you'll find this thread isn't for alternative spellings whilst there's a lot of threads out there that are all for it, it's a very diverse world out there Smile

@DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow

Iris is the best of the girls, don't really like the rest. Don't like any of the boys names.

Of course, my opinion isn't important at all! Name your child whatever you like.

Thank you! We will be, I've never shared our baby name list except with parents and it's soo interesting to see the different views/opinions X

@NameChange84

Well the first time I came across the idea that Thalia sounded like 'failure' and it's a fairly famous instance in terms of its being at the beginning of a deservedly classic girls' school story series was in Antonia Forest's Autumn Term, when a girl called Thalia introduces herself to two other new girls on a train, and both mishear, and one says 'Why are you called Failure? Is it because you weren't a boy?' and Thalia responds 'patiently', as she's implicitly had people think this before.

The book was written in 1948, and all three girls are upper-middle/minor landed gentry attending a socially-uniform boarding school, hence presumably RP speakers. But I doubt AF would have included the joke, if she didn't think it worked as a rule for RP speakers' pronunciation.

Interesting! I’ve never come across this author or her books, though having gone to such schools in the 90s/00s I avoided reading books set in schools with the exception of Harry Potter lol. Too close for comfort! There’s also a possibility it was out of print.

This anecdote would suggest a Thay beginning as opposed to Tay to me. Tay-lia or Thay-lia certainly isn’t the most common or accepted pronunciation of Thalia.

They are absolutely excellent, @NameChange84 -- I'm always surprised they aren't better-known, but admittedly they have had a chequered history of being only briefly in print (I think via Girls Gone By or similar) in recent years and are very expensive on Abe and the like.

It sounds reductive to say that they are 'just' girls' school stories (there are also books set during the holidays focusing on the girls' large sibling group, and two about an ancestor who was in Shakespeare's acting company) -- they are subtle, brilliantly-characterised, and have a huge range of cultural reference.

unmarkedbythat · 17/12/2020 12:53

Of your girl's names I like Thalia the most.

For boys, I like the way Jaxson sounds but am being a real snob and hating the spelling!

laurielo · 17/12/2020 12:56

@NameChange84

All your girls’ names, whilst not my taste, are fine when spelled correctly.

I don’t like any of your boys’ names, sorry. Lockie is especially awful.

Gp is grandparents!

Not to OP but...

In what world/accent does

Thalia - Tahhh-lee-uh

rhyme with Failure - Fay-lure?!

Ah sorry I thought you meant actual GP's Grin

My grandparents and there parents all hates to be called by there full names ie Albert - Bertie William - Bill Margaret - Margo Edna - Eddie so even they didn't stick to there proper names or proper spelling, names always come full circle and that's why a lot of names are creeping back in with different spellings as there coming back into fashion - or maybe not it's each owns preference

I love nuala

CakeRattleandRoll · 17/12/2020 13:51

I think you're being very polite, OP, and not 'taking umbridge' at all, despite the largely negative feedback. I have always had to spell my name and correct its pronunciation, not because it is an unusual spelling, just because it is a very unusual name. It has never really bothered me.

FWIW, I love Iris. I get what you are saying about Lockie not having any link to Lachlan for you; although if you use it, most people will just assume that his full name is Lachlan.

ChnandlerBong · 17/12/2020 13:56

speaking as someone whose dm chose the world's most bonkers way o spell 'Catherine'.... it's just not worth choosing an unusual spelling.

I get that my spelling looks nice written down and I loved being unusual as a kid. But now? What's the point? Am having to spell it constantly and also get it misspelled all the time. Just not worth the hassle.

And - at least people know Catherine can be spelled multiple ways. If you're called Polly/Posy/Jackson with a whacky spelling people won't even ask and it will ALWAYS be spelled wrong.

good for your OH - but you have to think about little Posie/Jaxson in all of this?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/12/2020 13:59

GIRLS:

Pollie - Hate the spelling, Polly is much better, the name is ok
Posie - if spelt Posy I like it, it reminds me of the book Ballet Shoes
Maebel - Again the spelling inputs me off, Mabel is ok
Thalia - I strongly dislike this name, Whether pronounced Talia or Tarlia
Iris - love it, I know a couple
Nuala - Dislike

BOYS:

Jaxson - Dislike, surnames are forenames are not my thing, the spelling is awful
Lockie - Best of a bad bunch, I’d go for Lochlan with Lochie (this spelling) as a nickname
Reid - It’s a surname, not even a particularly good one.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/12/2020 14:02

To add I don’t think any are particularly unusual, they are predominantly normal names with weird spellings.

Ithinkim · 17/12/2020 14:12

Every kid within 10 miles of my brother's house is called Jaxson. When we go to the park we always say I wonder if Jaxson will be there? Grin

Iris is really pretty. I've seen Mollie spelt like that but not pollie. A pollute here isn't a good thing.

Definition of 'pollies'

Politicians, or pollies, are generally disliked and distrusted.

Thank you Cake no really no umbridge at all I was just very curious, I haven't shared my names with friends as we're all at the point where we are TTC so keeping it private and just wanted options

Ohh it's lovely to see that it hasn't bothered you, my name is pretty boring but I love the fact my partners name is common but spelled different he loves it too!

Thank you Xmas Grin

I quite like Lockie but would have to have Lachlan on the birth certificate!

How about Arlo? Albie? Bertie?

Love Polly.,also Thalia! Dahlia!

GGioia · 17/12/2020 14:16

Thalia and Jackson with the proper spelling.

Like I've said in another post you can call your child anything and they might still hate it, so although i wouldn't pick anything 'too out there' hopefully our kids have the same taste as us and love their name.

Like you say, you loved your name as a child but not so much now, so your parents couldn't do right or wrong, it's so hard as parents to get it right, if I was you I'd embrace your name it's unique to you no matter what it is or how it's spelled pronounced Smile

Only Nuala and Reid are vaguely unusual names around here from your list.Spelling names incorrectly doesn't make them unusual. However, this your choice, go with what you want to. Lots of people will just spell them the right way though and this may become annoying for them child in time.

LadyR77 · 17/12/2020 15:10

Iris is the only one of those I like. The "unusual" spellings are dreadful, imo.
