The other day I read about a girl called Nerys and it was the first time I saw this name thought it was so beautiful.

I also worked with children and one was called Keziah, I just remember writing it down because I thought it was so pretty.

Has anyone else got any names that when they heard them for the first time they made a note to remember them?

Caspian. I just adore it and still wish I'd used it. Also love Casper.

There’s an Oberon in dd’s class. I pity the poor kid when he gets to secondary school and they do A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and they all find out he’s the king of the fairies.

@BadTimesAtTheElRoyale

Zillah, I discovered it when I was researching the family tree. She was a great great Aunt form Northern Ireland. It just struck me as beautiful and unusual. If my baby days weren't behind me I would use it although the nickname Godzilla migh tbe a worry.
I have a Zillah in my family tree.

I named DCat Zilla in homage

My boss has just become a gran and the baby is called Otis.

I have also met a Forget and a Thursday, but I would not be naming my kids either of these!

When I was registering DC1, the couple in front of us told me their baby girl was going to be named Favour, as they had waited ten years to conceive her. Not my choice, but I thought it was very sweet.

Someone I know used the name Arsove as a girl's name. I think it's pronounced Ar-so-vay, but I immediately read it as Arse-over Grin

Amaryllis, so lovely.

But I once heard of siblings called Denim, Calico and Gingham, which is something else.

I knew someone called Toren when I was a teen. It went perfectly with his surname. He sounded like a film star. I'd never heard it before nor since.

Baine and Jack Daniels.

My first mother in law is Nerina, (after the beautiful flower), perfectly normal name here.
Have had a dear colleague called Pious and others called Charity, Blessing, Gift and many many other lovely virtue names. My Dad worked with a "Radio", "Doctor" & "Surgeon".
Some name their child after the most aspirational thing/person they have come across, or heard of. Makes life interesting.

forvo.com/word/gr%C3%A1inne/

Try this link, it gives the pronunciation, sounds pretty stilted whereas its actually quite a soft sounding name in reality

Given the difficulty the non irish media/presenters had pronouncing Saoirse Ronan's name even when she stood beside them teaching them how to I suppose we should be used to mistakes of this kind

When we named my daughter we were both allowed to shortlist 2 names ... I really wanted Persephone or seraphina. My husband has chosen Emily and Annie. Somewhat different ends or the spectrum!
Still love Persephone.

South Africa (going on your username)? I have friends and family there and all their pets have these sort of aspirational names - Bollinger, Prada, Bentley etc. It’s all a bit cringey. I didn’t realise people name their kids along these lines too; yikes.

Diverseduvet · 04/12/2020 18:55

Used to know a girl called Friday. Her surname was Sessions

LemonDrizzles · 04/12/2020 18:55

Hera

I met a baby Ace once. Still can’t decide if I love it or hate it.

saywhatwhatnow · 04/12/2020 19:07

Valentine is the most beautiful name! DH would never agree on that one though. Maybe if we have one more I'll use it as middle name!

reallyalurker · 04/12/2020 19:10

There are some good names in the 2019 Scotland list, which lists all names even if only given to one child. In the boys' names there is a R, and a Trump.

stressfullday · 04/12/2020 21:41

stressfullday · 04/12/2020 22:34

cactusdog · 04/12/2020 22:38

@VenusClapTrap oooh Oberon, I love this! He could be Obi for short. Wish I'd heard of this before DS2 came along.

Our names are Magnus and Hector and such so not sure it would have fitted but really love that!

Longdistance · 04/12/2020 22:47

@WomenAndVulvas I have a cousin called Attila, he’s Hungarian.
I used to work with chap called Sunday. He’s was just the nicest guy ever.
My dd had a friend called Tuesday. She seemed like a cool kid according to my dd.
My other dd goes to school with a Marvellous, he’s anything but.

FestiveChristmasLights · 04/12/2020 22:50

I think Artemis would be shortened to Arty. Artyfarty. It's a no from me.

I know two. One never abbreviates and the other goes by Temi. I don’t think it’s the sort of name you’d use Arty for.

YorkshireParentalPerson · 04/12/2020 23:10

I saw the name Zephaniah on a TV programme. Never heard of it before and was completely wowed by it!
Someone I know called their daughter Awa which means beautiful Angel. I thought that was a truly lovely name.

YorkshireParentalPerson · 04/12/2020 23:11

Oh and love the boys name Digby!
