The other day I read about a girl called Nerys and it was the first time I saw this name thought it was so beautiful.

I also worked with children and one was called Keziah, I just remember writing it down because I thought it was so pretty.

Has anyone else got any names that when they heard them for the first time they made a note to remember them?

As a teenager I loved the names Artemis and Athena but no way was exH going to agree to them. The dds are probably thankful! More recently I've thought Autumn, Aspen and Skyla rather lovely.

At the other end of the scale I delivered a baby Glory as a medical student, met brothers Magic and Apollo and there's a baby on our nursery waiting list whose name is two French rivers hyphenated.

A Boy in my daughters swimming group was Mulberry Hmm

Kat70 · 06/12/2020 17:12

My daughter is Skye-Blue.
Everyone comments how beautiful it is.

@Tartyflette

I used to work with a lady named Ildiko. I've never come across the name again. My maternal GM was called Pretoria (She was born during the Boer war, I think it may have been to commemorate a victory, it was a very jingoistic time.)
Ildiko is a very common Hungarian name. I have 3 cousins with that name!
MotherOfDragonite · 06/12/2020 18:41

@Kat70 I think it's a lovely name! How is it pronounced?

Cindie943811A · 06/12/2020 19:21

Daintry. Her father was a old fashioned professor of English literature.
Never come across another living one

Cindie943811A · 06/12/2020 19:23

That’s very interesting @Kat70, but what is her name?

cushioncovers · 06/12/2020 19:32

I was 18 (I'm now 50) I met someone called Fern she was a beautiful looking woman with olive skin and dressed in a hippie bohemian style and I can remember being blown away by her. Today Fern is a well known name because of Fern Britton etc but back then I had never heard of such an 'exotic' name.

goldenharvest · 06/12/2020 19:45

I met a girl named Desdemona once! She’d told me her name was Dallas at first so I was surprised when she told me her real name. I also have a friend who goes by a pretty normal name but he’s really called Yogindra.

DoTheMaccaroni · 07/12/2020 07:53

Oh and I also met the sweetest guy once names Huckleberry. I loved that!

DoTheMaccaroni · 07/12/2020 07:55

My daughters name stopped me in my tracks and now does the same. People often hear me saying her name as the pass and have to stop me to confirm what it is because it’s so unusual. Thankfully it’s always lovely compliments that follow 🥰

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/12/2020 08:14

I once came across a baby Lilith. The parents seemed perfectly nice and I presume didn't know the association.

Romemarie · 07/12/2020 14:25

Came across a Santa. Didn’t stop me in my tracks as I to think pretty. Just to think wow someone named there daughter that.

Only name I really remember thinking was pretty was hearing someone call to there daughter who was called Promise, thought that was pretty and different.
Not that id ever use it.

notalwaysalondoner · 07/12/2020 18:27

Names that stopped me because they’re awesome (even if I’d never use them): Emerald, Bluebell, Thor

Because they’re awful: Princess, Chardonnay

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 07/12/2020 18:42

My late uncle was named Christmas. Guess his birthday Grin

I can only presume that got some raised eyebrows.

whatisthislifesofullofcare · 07/12/2020 19:13

Knew a family where the girls names were all derivatives of Elisabeth ie Ellie, Elisa, Bella, Lisa, Lizzy.

SendHelp30 · 07/12/2020 19:25

Santa can be used by various European countries for a girls name. It translates as Saint I believe. Santi is also popular

TizzDeSeason · 07/12/2020 19:31

A girl I used to teach called Lourdes, but pronounced Lord-EZ. She was beautiful and the name sounded exotic but also had that very Catholic connotation, so seemed quite mystical.

Tartyflette · 08/12/2020 00:07

Thank you, Kat70, that's interesting about Ildiko.
This lady was not apparently Hungarian (very English surname and accent) but perhaps she had Hungarian heritage. Smile

vitaminC · 08/12/2020 09:43

A family we met on holiday had 3 daughters:
Anya
Danya
Dana
which is, umm, different.

2 of my great grandmothers had unusual names I really love - Zipporah and Lavinia.
Unfortunately xh never agreed to using either of them.

Claricethecat45 · 08/12/2020 11:55

Hortense.
I was mute with.....actually its rather lovely?!
