me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

Why do people have to learn everything at school? Do you take no interest in the world beyond school? Did your learning just stop outside of the school gates? I didn’t even do GCSE history and I know about the Enola Gay. It’s just stuff you pick up. You don’t even need to set out to learn something. It baffles me.

doctorhamster · 27/09/2020 20:18

I know about Hiroshima but I've never heard of Enola Gay. It seems I'm in the minority though op so I wouldn't!

Why on earth would I decide to randomly google the name of the plane? It’s not really something that has come up in 27 years of conversations.

Different generations learn different history.

Enola Gay

Ebola

The manic street preachers song (which goes- “enola, alone!”)

Nope.

Nuala? Nola? Lola?

Peachypips78 · 27/09/2020 20:20

How about Anola?

Poppingnostopping · 27/09/2020 20:22

It sounds like Granola to me. It's not a very pretty name, but then some of the very popular names on here aren't very pretty to me.

TomNookTheHustler · 27/09/2020 20:27

I thought everyone had heard of Enola Gay.

The first plane to drop an atomic bomb.

Fucking hell, no wonder Brexit played out like it did, people don't know ANYTHING ShockHmm

Bwlch · 27/09/2020 20:28

I’m 27, know about Hiroshima etc but never heard of the name of the plane. It is not something taught in schools now.

Was it ever?

polkadotpixie · 27/09/2020 20:32

I quite like it actually! It only makes me think of the Manic Street Preachers song Enola/Alone

I've never heard of Enola Gay until now and I have a Modern History degree! Obviously I'm aware of Hiroshima but was never taught the name of the plane so I doubt she'd be bullied for that (or the 80's song or the Manics song)

I quite like the 'alone' link, it's kind of melancholy but it's reversed so I don't find it sad and unless there's another Ebola outbreak then I don't think that's an issue either

olderthanyouthink · 27/09/2020 20:33

"Why do people have to learn everything at school?"

Of course we dont but why would we all be interested in the same thing the the same degree.

I know things about human biology that loads of people don't and I'm like "why don't they know that? Oh yeah they didn't go down the same wiki rabbit hole"

Winifredgoose · 27/09/2020 20:37

I'm afraid I immediately thought of the Enola Gay. I think the problem is that the name is so unusual, people's minds automatically go to the atomic bomb. I'm sorry. However, I expect her generation may not be as focused on the second world war during school history lessons/books/films as our generations have been.

SirGawain · 27/09/2020 20:37

@FairfaxAikman

Ebola Gay, BUT the plane was named after the pilot's mother so I don't think it's the worst choice.
Surely the connotations it has acquired since make it usuitable.

Oh yes. This.
Mummyoflittledragon · 27/09/2020 20:39

Zarking
I don’t understand the upset about the OMD hit. Wasn’t it anti war?

As for Enola, the crime against the Japanese is not in the name. As it has been brought up by association, I would think carefully.

MotherMood · 27/09/2020 20:40

I also knew about Hiroshima but not the plane name.

QualityFeet · 27/09/2020 20:41

Unless there are other Ebola outbreaks - er like the one in June this year? It does and will reoccur (but usually only kills Africans so yes the media coverage isn’t extensive).

FippertyGibbett · 27/09/2020 20:41

Enola Gay here too.

MillicentMartha · 27/09/2020 20:42

Sorry, but Enola Gay was the first association the name brings to me.

BikeTyson · 27/09/2020 20:43

I don’t really like the sound of it anyway but it also has Enola Gay connotations for me.

I’m sure there will probably be a rush of them if this series proves popular, though, so that might fade away.

CandyLeBonBon · 27/09/2020 20:45

It's Alone, backwards. Which is sad. But I get why. Also the history of Enola Gay is sad.

BikeTyson · 27/09/2020 20:45

Different generations learn different history.

I don’t think this is generational, it seems more general knowledge/curiously/good memory vs mainly knowing about what you’ve been taught.

pilates · 27/09/2020 20:46

Ebola springs to mind

PinkBuffalo · 27/09/2020 20:49

Sorry OP I can only think enola gay too.
I am usually all for unusual and lovely names, but this is such a bad association Sad

Cornettoninja · 27/09/2020 20:50

It would limit opportunities to travel to Japan...

The history around the first nuclear strike isn’t going to go away and that’s an association that’s going to last through adulthood, way past any childish playground name calling.

I just wouldn’t.

thenightsky · 27/09/2020 20:51

Yes, it was.
