me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

Onceuponatimethen · 27/09/2020 19:44

I immediately thought of Ebola Gay as well

shartsi · 27/09/2020 19:44

How about just Nola

fellrunner85 · 27/09/2020 19:45

and for goodness' sake, the 80s song isnt the reason people have heard of Enola Gay.

The dropping of the atomic bomb is only one of the most landmark events in world history...

AllPlayedOut · 27/09/2020 19:45

Never heard of Enola Gay either and I don't think some song in the 80s is all that important

The plane that dropped the atomic bomb certainly is.

Slightlybrwnbanana · 27/09/2020 19:46

Children will learn about it in school.
Nola does sound nice as an alternative

thenightsky · 27/09/2020 19:46

@fellrunner85

I am 34 and I've never heard of Enola Gay

That's pretty alarming. Presumably, though, you have heard of Hiroshima? Nagasaki? The atomic bomb? World War 2??

And you understand that it's not a great thing to give a child a name associated with nuclear warfare?!!?

This. I go cold when I hear that name.
Sandytoes86 · 27/09/2020 19:47

It’s alone backwards which is a bit sad but that’s not a big issue. What about Eleanor ?

AldiAisleofCrap · 27/09/2020 19:47

does ‘Isabella’ get teased for being ‘Influenza’? I don’t know, but Isabel necessary on a bike?

GoldenPlover · 27/09/2020 19:47

I know someone who spells it Anola which is nice.

There's also a main character in a book / TV series called Nola which I also think is a good alternative

Beautyoftheirdreams · 27/09/2020 19:47

I've not heard of Enola Gay (off to Google) but I think it's a not very pretty name and the fact it is Alone spelt backwards gives it sad connotations for me that I wouldn't want to name my child for

Sidewinder30 · 27/09/2020 19:48

I immediately think of the Enola Gay. Shame, it's a lovely name in its own right.. but the Horishima bombing is not a good association for your LO!

SionnachRua · 27/09/2020 19:49

@Slightlybrwnbanana

A generational thing? The dropping of the first ever atomic bomb is a bit more than that.
That was in relation to the song. However I don't think it's all that shocking that people won't know the name of the plane, is it? Doesn't mean that they aren't aware of the atomic bomb/ WW2 etc though, that's quite a leap.

HMS Helga was the ship that shelled Dublin during the 1916 Rising. I'm not going to tell people not to use the name Helga as kids will associate it with the Rising/ bully because of it, that would be absurd. I would be shocked if they hadn't heard of the Rising but I don't expect people to know all the details.

SuzieCarmichael · 27/09/2020 19:50

“ I don't think some song in the 80s is all that important”

Gosh, I am embarrassed for you. How ignorant. It’s not about the song! Dearie me.

thenightsky · 27/09/2020 19:50

Here you go

It makes me cry when I see footage of that time.

SuzieCarmichael · 27/09/2020 19:51

Wow. You’re comparing the start of the nuclear age to the shelling of Dublin? Come on now.

RunningFromInsanity · 27/09/2020 19:51

I’m 27, know about Hiroshima etc but never heard of the name of the plane. It is not something taught in schools now.
Her generation will not associate that name.

tara66 · 27/09/2020 19:53

Again - Enola Gay! Don't think name will ever be used again. Presume you did not know?

Regularsizedrudy · 27/09/2020 19:53

Makes me think of Ebola and the man is street preachers song. It’s a hard no from me.

MotherMood · 27/09/2020 19:54

Nola is lovely as alternative

Onceuponatimethen · 27/09/2020 19:54

If you like the sound there are other potential names eg

Finola
Lola
Carola

Regularsizedrudy · 27/09/2020 19:55

Manic*

AltogetherAndrews · 27/09/2020 19:56

I think the association with Enola Gay is too much. Those who haven’t heard of it are in the minority, and it will absolutely be taught in school, so her peers will learn about it. Having your name associated with that many horrific deaths is not great, like being called Adolf.

happylittlechick · 27/09/2020 19:56

The fact that it's alone backwards makes it really sad. I'd hate to have a name like that. So sorrowful.

woodhill · 27/09/2020 19:56

OMD song playing in my head.

BillysMyBunny · 27/09/2020 19:57

I’m early 30s and have never heard of Enola Gay. The name’s not to my taste but I wouldn’t think a plane from 1946 is going to be very relevant to the generation of babies being born this year so I wouldn’t let that put me off!
