me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

24, know about Hiroshima but not the name of the plane

I like the show, kinda like the sound of the name but doubt I'd use it. Reminds me of a Jacqueline Wilson book where a girl is called Granola.

If she's not got a lot of friends, A-loner

Lemonsyellow · 27/09/2020 19:59

No. Enola Gay. The associations are terrible. It doesn’t have to be something that is taught at school. What’s that got to do with it? It’s something you just learn about as a human being.

olderthanyouthink · 27/09/2020 20:00

@AltogetherAndrews

I think the association with Enola Gay is too much. Those who haven’t heard of it are in the minority, and it will absolutely be taught in school, so her peers will learn about it. Having your name associated with that many horrific deaths is not great, like being called Adolf.
Granted I didn't do GCSE history but if we were taught this in school it was only in passing and I have a weird memory for this stuff, constantly saying didn't you learn that at school

(Left secondary in 2012)

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 20:02

'Never heard of Enola Gay either and I don't think some song in the 80s is all that important'

Pretty fucking important to the Japanese Shock

Babies are still being born with defects due to the radiation.

The USA dropped 2 nukes. No one has ever dropped a nuke on someone. It's just a huge atrocity.

Sorry to go on a tangent but wish.

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 20:02

Woah not wish.

AyDeeAitchDee · 27/09/2020 20:03

I didn't know about the Enola Gay.

But yea my first thought was Ebola.

Not good.

JaffaCake70 · 27/09/2020 20:03

I love it. It reminds me of the song Enola Gay by OMD, listen to the song and you'll love the name even more. You do know the story of the Enola Gay don't you? If not, google it before you name your DD and then decide. I think the name is lovely.

SionnachRua · 27/09/2020 20:05

I see you deliberately misread that sentence, as it states I don't think the 80s song is that important - not the plane? But no matter, continue with the dramatics as you wish. I'm sure the Japanese are most appreciative.

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 20:06

Jaffa why do you think it's even more lovely due to the association,?

Really interested to understand that.

whattodo2019 · 27/09/2020 20:06

I love it!! Having watched the film
I've fallen in love with the name too!!!

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 20:07

It's not about 'dramatics' it's about one of the biggest atrocities of the 20 th century.

Colliemayhem · 27/09/2020 20:07

I visited Hiroshima 2 years ago, just no. No. No.No.

carly2803 · 27/09/2020 20:07

ebola?

no, just no. almost as bad as Cove/id

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 20:08

The song is about the plane:/

Conditions normal it's time to go etc. It's about the bomb.

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 20:09

Agree it's a great tune though and I was lucky enough to get a free ticket to OMD last year (seems an age away with covid) and it was a top notch brilliant gig :)

YorkshireIndie · 27/09/2020 20:09

I really like it and if I had a daughter I would really consider it!

ZarkingBell · 27/09/2020 20:13

My teenagers told me about Enola Gay. They didn't need to study it at school to find out about it. Like most teenagers they were appalled when they first understood about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They raised it as I was playing the OMD song and felt I needed educating! Obviously I knew but they were genuinely shocked .

Please don't call your child Enola.

SionnachRua · 27/09/2020 20:13

Point still stands @NiceGerbil , the song clearly hasn't stood the test of time. I see other people around my age saying on the thread that they don't know it.

Everyone knows about Hiroshima and Nagasaki - I'd hope, at least - but some obscure 80s song isn't much of a reason to not choose the name.

Having said that, it being alone backwards is more than enough for me to say no to it.

Saharafordessert · 27/09/2020 20:14

Dreadful name

ClinkyMonkey · 27/09/2020 20:14

Sorry OP, the Enola Gay is all I think of too.

The plane was named after the pilot's wife. What an honour that must've been ....

Slightlybrwnbanana · 27/09/2020 20:14

@BillysMyBunny

I’m early 30s and have never heard of Enola Gay. The name’s not to my taste but I wouldn’t think a plane from 1946 is going to be very relevant to the generation of babies being born this year so I wouldn’t let that put me off!
Calling your first ds Adolf then? No relevance to a new generation there. Hmm
SionnachRua · 27/09/2020 20:14

Having said that, I'll agree that having just heard the song now, it's a banger!

Slightlybrwnbanana · 27/09/2020 20:15

It was his mum. Remember this was an American victory, and for many was what ended the war. It's not universally seen as an atrocity. Don't think many American babies are called it either mind.

ClinkyMonkey · 27/09/2020 20:17

@Slightlybrwnbanana

You're right of course. My mistake!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 27/09/2020 20:17

Negative connotations aside, I think it'll become a very popular name over the next few years.
