Enola for DD?

me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

OP posts:

I also think it depends how you’ve grown up.
So I grew up in a house where learning stopped at school, you didn’t carry that on outside. Picking up a history book or going to a museum was not the done thing.

Now with children I do the opposite with them, we spend most holidays (BC!) at museums, I take the topics at school and go with that for days out to get a better base of knowledge for them.

That's actually a very fair point, EvilPea. It's very easy to take such perspectives for granted, but we shouldn't.

EvilPea · 29/09/2020 13:54

It’s like the brexit comments on here being related to not knowing about Hiroshima. They are pretty rude and judgemental.

We all come at life from our own experiences, the cards we’ve been dealt and the situations we find ourselves in. The decisions and views we hold reflect that.

MidnightCitrus · 29/09/2020 13:56

@SionnachRua

Not that important??

You want your DD to be forever associated with the name of the plane that dropped the Atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Reallt??

Wow

Another one lacking reading comprehension skills I see. The song isn't that important, the event obviously is.

As an aside, I can't see why people are so surprised that others might not read up on a particular event. I love learning about ancient civilizations and rulers - Benin kingdom, Mansa Musa etc. Explorers and world folklore too. World wars aren't my thing but I don't expect everyone else to be interested in my favourite parts of history. There's so much history out there, everyone will have their niche.

Yes, I know the song is not important, I'm 'wowing' at the not knowing about the event.
India999 · 29/09/2020 13:57

Love it! Really nice name.

AlexaShutUp · 29/09/2020 14:30

I don't disagree with that, and it is not necessarily someone's fault if they don't know something, but I do think it matters because it does impact on their understanding of stuff. I don't think we can make informed decisions if we are not, well....informed.

Coffeeoverload · 29/09/2020 14:41

Absolutely Enola Gay...

You shouldn't do this to your child. Even if your child is unaware of the connotations, it will reflect appallingly on you - either for your ignorance or your callousness. Neither are great looks!

Also in my 30s and have known about the Enola Gay since a young age. 80s child but never heard of the song, just the atrocity.

Quite shocked by the number of people on this thread a) learning what the Enola Gay was for the first time and b) STILL thinking it's OK to name a baby after an instrument of genocide. Are millennials really that desensitised to the pain of others? Sick...

they will be informed with other stuff that forms their opinions. Just not this
MsTSwift · 29/09/2020 17:39

None of the other “stuff” they know will be as important though will it? Their opinions will be flawed because of the seismic gap in their knowledge.

SleepingStandingUp · 29/09/2020 17:44

I don't think we can make informed decisions if we are not, well....informed. I'd bet that even the people who know what Hiroshima means don't particularly use this when they're making decisions on everyday politics. It night be a factor is different parties have different opinions on nuclear weapons but they're much more likely to be influenced by a million other things"closer to home" that affect their everyday lives. The idea that is a person doesn't know about this one thing then they're wandering around saying "dog" a lot and writing Trump on their courting skills because they're clearly so ignorant, which is what you'd expect from how some posters are carrying on,is absurd. I'm sure @ScarMatty had lots of other things she's aware of which enable her to make intelligent decisions about important issues

RunningFromInsanity · 29/09/2020 18:47

Posters do know that the OP isn’t naming her child ‘Enola Gay’, just ‘Enola’?

Which is now going to be more associated with Enola Holmes.

Theradioison · 29/09/2020 19:02

We were discussing the name of the plane, not the bombing

I think you'll find that we were discussing the bombing

Theradioison · 29/09/2020 19:06

You are joking aren't you? 16 pages of everyone, literally everyone apart from a couple of posters being completely horrified that it would even come in for consideration given the context?? Who the f* is Enola Holmes? Don't answer that actually because I'm really not interested

SeanCailleach · 29/09/2020 19:15

@Theradioison but Enola Holmes is Sherlock's sister. And while the film with Enola is a frothy bit of mind candy with Enola as a very clever detective, in the BBC version Sherlock is a high-functioning drug addicted sociopath and his sister Euris is a lunatic. Why would you name your daughter after Sherlock's sister?

NiceGerbil · 29/09/2020 19:34

'Which is now going to be more associated with Enola Holmes.'

What, globally?
After a made for streaming TV film???

Theradioison · 29/09/2020 19:37

It just gets worse does it not! Confused

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 29/09/2020 19:41

Yes my first thought was Enola Gay too. I'm quite shocked that people have never heard of it I have to say!

SumAndSubstance · 29/09/2020 19:58

Seems almost like OP dropped an atomic bomb and flew off...

Theradioison · 29/09/2020 20:06

Seems almost like OP dropped an atomic bomb and flew off...

Don't blame them entirely!

Ghosts2020 · 30/09/2020 02:41

Nuala
Ennie
Nora
But not enola

sashh · 30/09/2020 05:18

Now I know the bomb existed, I know it brought about the end of the war but that’s it

That's debatable, as for Fat man ...

At the time it was dropped, Japan had offered conditional surrender, the only condition being that the emperor would remain emperor.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 30/09/2020 05:52

Atomic bomb. And likely too be called "granola" at school. Bad choice.

SeanCailleach · 30/09/2020 08:07

That's an alternative version to the story I grew up with, that Japan were prepared to fight to the death of the last man, woman and child. Or at least hold the Philippines and Manchuria. Which is supported by the readily available Wikipedia article. Your evidence for your version?

This is why it is important for people to know this piece of history. The atom bomb did end the war. The question is whether it was necessary, and what other options were available at the time.

Redcups64 · 30/09/2020 08:12

32 and never heard of enola gay before this thread.

I like the name and would choose it.

sashh · 30/09/2020 09:20

On August 9th Japan accepted the Potsdan treaty with the caveat, "said Declaration does not comprise any demand which prejudices the prerogatives of His Majesty as sovereign ruler.”

The second bomb was due to be dropped on the 12th, it was brought forward (due to weather conditions) and dropped about 12 hours later.

I grew up with, that Japan were prepared to fight to the death of the last man, woman and child. Or at least hold the Philippines and Manchuria.

The Soviet Union had also declared war on Japan and was in Manchuria, there wasn't much chance Japan could defeat the US and the USSR. The Japanese navy was useless by this point.
