Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

Lol at some of these. Mine are Felicity (so try hard), Kai, any ay or ayden ending names, Nick, Sophie/a, Vincent, Jaxon, Carter, Nickie, Catherine, Amelia, any just really popular or made up sounding names.

My kids names haven't been mentioned yet which is good.

GroupSects · 21/08/2020 19:55

Logan makes me think bogey too, thought I was the only one.
Olivia and Oliver make me think of onions.
Daisy- Cow
Alice- Lice

Mine is more associations that I think of or books I’ve read that have a character with that name.

Eg. Emma Apple, Pippa Pear

This will be a long list. I often have a very strong reaction to certain names. Many of them make me feel ill and I get certain images in my head when I hear them. I'm not sure if it's related to my autism.

Frank/Frankie/Hank. The "ank" sound makes me feel ill and makes me think of someone retching.
Steven/Stephen. It's a name that snags. It feels like a zip catching on clothing, the side of a matchbox or velcro. I can barely say it without shuddering. Likewise Frank.
Lee. It makes me shiver.
Finn/Finley. So overused and I just dislike the sound,
Maggie. Margaret. Unpleasant sound and it makes me think of maggots.
Jean. It makes me think of earwax.
George. A puddingy name is exactly how I see it. I see someone else said the same.
Clementine. It makes me think of the word "Clammy".
Astrid. It reminds me of the word Astringent which is a horrible sounding word.
Freddie. Overused and sounds like frayed wool would feel on your teeth.
Elliot/Ellen/Helen/Ellie. They make me feel queasy. I detest the film E.T and I don't know if it's because of the name Elliot or if the name Elliot made me hate E.T.
Pearl. Ugly.
Olive. Likewise
Percy. Wet and cold.
Ava. Overused and just generally not a fan
Abby. The Abb sound is a very unattractive one. It makes me feel strange.
Atticus. Just awful.
Paul. It makes my mouth feel funny.

I could go on but you've all suffered enough.

KimMarie34 · 21/08/2020 20:06

I've always found the names I really dislike are people I've known in the past and have turned out to be idiots, so it's kind of like an association thing. The main douche name being Brett.

loudev · 21/08/2020 20:07

@OhhhPeee same here I have always hated that name!! No idea why!!

veryveryirrational · 21/08/2020 20:08

Clementine - It's a fruit, not a name.
Beatrice/Beatrix - Dusty
Carmen - Dated and too harsh sounding
Ophelia - Paedoph1lia, should I say more?

Jaxon - What's wrong with Jackson?
Archie, Alfie, Theo - Nice names for a pet
Oscar - Just ugly
Lark - It's a bird
Otis - Otitis (medical term for ear infection)

AfterSchoolWorry · 21/08/2020 20:08

Marnie and Dulcie.

Godawful, ugly names.

loudev · 21/08/2020 20:09

*Jack. Every Jack I ever met as a nanny/nursery nurse was a little horror.
*
Haha I have a jack, and he really is a little horror to be fair. It's a naughty name in my opinion but I liked it so... yeah lol

looloo247 · 21/08/2020 20:10

Evie, Gracie, Lily, Kelsey, Lacie (all of these even more if double barrelled with Mae/may/mai)
Isabella/Isabelle
Adam
Alfie
Billie (for a girl)
Tyler
Morgan
Aiden/Hayden/brayden/Jayden...

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2020 20:14

Charlotte, and all female derivatives of George

Sunny345H · 21/08/2020 20:15

Morag
Iris
Ethel

badg3r · 21/08/2020 20:16

What I also don't understand is how much difference a consonant can make!

Harry - lovely
Barry - ok
Gary - definitely not
Larry - definitely not

MrsCalypsoGrant · 21/08/2020 20:17

Hayden/Jayden/Kaiden etc

Amelia - all I can think of is a meal worm

Grace, I just read it as Gra-kee

George - onomatopoeia - just sounds fat, like porge

Twittery girls names that can't be taken seriously once the person turns 21 - Millie, Tillie, Evie, Issy...

Anything hyphenated, the worst being Lily-Mae

And I have an utterly irrational dislike of Rueben and Riley.

SpangleBug · 21/08/2020 20:19

I have to add Tabitha(That ugly Ab sound again, though I like it for a cat) and Beatrice to the list. Beatrice makes my mouth feel like I've eaten a lemon.

SpangleBug · 21/08/2020 20:20

Also Daphne. It feels like old worn out slippers and sounds too much like Daft.

TeetotalKoala · 21/08/2020 20:20

@loudev

*Jack. Every Jack I ever met as a nanny/nursery nurse was a little horror. * Haha I have a jack, and he really is a little horror to be fair. It's a naughty name in my opinion but I liked it so... yeah lol
DH wanted Jack for both DS's and I wouldn't let him. But to be fair, I'd have saved a lot of breath going with that one syllable name than the two syllable one we went for as DS1 is a bleeding nightmare.

I have now seen both DS and DH mentioned, but mine hasn't been yet. Though the name my mother wanted for me has popped up as 'try hard'. She wanted Felicity but my dad shot her down saying that I'd be known as Felix the cat. I quite like Felicity. And Felix as a nickname.

nildesparandum · 21/08/2020 20:21

A lot of my family's names are on here.
None of my immediate family i.e. DH DC or my own, but some of the others I did not like at first but grew to love them like the bearer.

Chocforthewin · 21/08/2020 20:23

Elisha, Iesha, Isabella, Tanisha, Tanya
Phillip ☺️

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfthigh · 21/08/2020 20:26

Rebecca - never met a nice person called Rebecca
Emily; Emma; Ella; Ellie; George; Oscar; Oliver - just unimaginative - the sort of thing I think you'd call a baby if you didn't really care about names and knew you'd have to be able to get their attention somehow so chose an arrangement of sounds
Freddie; Alfie; Archie; Evie; Charlie; Gracie; Jessie - just use a full name FGS
Jasper - dialect word for 'wasp'
Caleb; Ethan; Luke - always PITA children
Anything hyphenated that's not French (Marie-Claire; Jean-Luc, etc) - trying to be unique or pretty and failing, especially if the second name is May/Mae or Rose
Any 'unique' spellings
Any faux-Welsh girls' names that end with -wyn, eg. Bronwyn (-wyn is a male suffix)
Archibald - apart from Mildred/Millicent, this is the ugliest name I've ever seen
Timothy - wettest name ever
Lois - once knew an absolute bellend called Lois

I'll be back later with more.

Bbq1 · 21/08/2020 20:27

I can't bear names that are hyphenated with May/Mae. It's names that don't even go with it like Sophie-Mae, Olivia-May, Ruby-May...so unoriginal. Don't like Olivia, Carly, names like Ciara spelt phonetically ie:Keerah, Charleigh etc Ugh. Also names like Khloe, Karol. Just spell them properly. Boys names - love Louis pronounced that way but not Lewis.

mahrezzy · 21/08/2020 20:27

I’ve always felt irrational hate towards a specific boys name - it’s perfectly lovely and quite common / overused now. But I’ve always always always hated it without being able to say why. Just always had a strong reaction to it.

I adopted a little boy three months ago. Guess what his name is...! And now I love it because I love him.
