Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

Following up for a recent post, Emily. If a name being a bit dreary and pedestrian is irrational. Very frilly, girly names, although I suppose that is a matter of definition. God knows, life is still hard enough for women without having to be pretty in pink.

midsomermurderess · 25/08/2020 13:24

I see someone has mentioned Ottilie. Yes, to that. Sounds like a sort of Violet Elizabeth Bott being carted about in a sedan chair.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/08/2020 13:33

Most of the names that get suggested on here. I read them and think WTF?
Someone suggest Constantine the other day. Apparently it's such a "pretty name" Confused

Inching · 25/08/2020 13:35

I see someone has mentioned Ottilie. Yes, to that. Sounds like a sort of Violet Elizabeth Bott being carted about in a sedan chair.

I always think Ottillie (sp?) sounds weirdly wobbly.

Brian

Ruth - it’s just so cold sounding to me

Harley - really don’t like it but love Harvey so it’s doesn’t make sense that I’m so anti the name Harley.

Muser314 · 25/08/2020 13:38

Love the name Ruth!

Muser314 · 25/08/2020 13:39

Harley and Harvey both a bit ... modern

anxiousanna75 · 25/08/2020 13:41

I don't particularly dislike these as names, but they have unpleasant associations for me personally.

Megan - make me think of toothache, because my Gran used to call teeth "meggies" when I was little and I was cutting a 6 year molar!

Erika - makes me think of a cat being sick. When I was a child the neighbours had a cat called Erika, and I witnessed it being sick on the drive and the sound it made sounded like "Erry-Ka!"

Courtney - reminds me of being in the park as a child and an angry woman shouting her daughter really loudly "Court-nay!"

Funny how they are all associated with childhood memories.

Lavendersquare · 25/08/2020 15:35

I personally can't stand:

Noah
Nathan
Kelsey
Stacie
Scarlett
Rowan
Plus anything remotely made up.

TheMostHappy · 31/08/2020 18:55

@Kokeshi123

Hannah and Martha. They make me imagine fat, stupid, puddingy girls with round fat faces.

And yes, George too. Round, fat and puddingy.

Chloe. The very sound of it makes me shudder for some reason. It makes me think of someone getting something soft and sticky stuck on the roof of their mouth.

I feel attacked by this on a personal level. Mainly because it is entirely accurate on my part GrinGrinGrin
ImaSababa · 31/08/2020 19:01

Megan is awful. The "gun" sound is so ugly.

Noah is just a flimsy series of sounds.

Names ending in "b" like Caleb and Jacob. Ugly as sin.

Names that have a pretty meaning but a clumsy sound, like Grace and Poppy.

"-um" names - Callum, Tatum, Liam. Blergh.

Ann. Lynn. So DULL.

Flappingflamingo · 31/08/2020 19:31

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 You all make me laugh, so glad I'm not on my own with weird irrational dislikes 😊

I just need ds2's name to be slated for the Happy Family full house, so I'm just going to throw Milo out there - anyone hate it because it's a dogs name or a character from the Tweenies?

AristotleAteMyHamster · 01/09/2020 12:26

Completely irrational dislike of Maria - no idea why, I like every other variant of the name, just not that one! I think it’s the “eeeee” sound, like a mouse squeaking.

shartsi · 01/09/2020 13:56

My name and 2 of my DC names mentioned here Grin

Aurelia, Eliana, Susannah, Mariannah, Alexandriana, Maximillianna - I find them too extra

Ruth- I hate shouting it across the room. I get a dry throat Ruuuuuuttthhh!

Cindie943811A · 02/09/2020 13:22

Archie sets my teeth on edge and sounds to me like nails on a chalk board.
Martha is a boring matronly name
Agatha and Agnes
Seth
Eric
Keith and Kenneth

user1477391263 · 02/09/2020 14:20

Oh, just thought of one:

Etta and all names ending in "etta"--Henrietta, Marietta, Loretta etc.

Just so fussy, fusty, frumpy and uptight sounding.

It makes me imagine someone in a fussy, overdecorated Victorian dress covered in way too many frills and trimmings and fastened with a million hooks-and-eyes and tiny little frigging buttons.

And yes, WHY is the name Ottillie "wobbly"? It makes no sense and yet somehow it is just such a.... wobbly name.

WitchesGlove · 02/09/2020 15:24

Cayden/ Kayden etc- horrible name
Emily- Everyone I’ve ever known was a bitch
Kayleigh/ Kayla etc- never liked
Danielle- not nice

abitfunny · 02/09/2020 16:00

James
Michael
George
Thomas
Arthur
Albert
Jack
William

Tbh all of them sound exactly the same. BORING

abitfunny · 02/09/2020 16:03

And don’t even get me started on Noah.

Girls I don’t like Wren, Lila, Isla, Ivy, Clara, Olivia, Amelia. Again to me they all have the same vibe

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 02/09/2020 18:21

Nicholas - hate hate hate!!Something really pompous sounding about it.
Guy - not so much a name as a pronoun. The equivalent of calling your child 'bloke'.

Imogen - sounds like a washing powder
Arabella/Araminta/Jacinta - and all those posh, frilly horsey names with far too many syllables.
Anything with a daft yoonique spelling

Used to really hate Sean but it's grown on me lately.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 02/09/2020 18:35

Also Caleb. The 'eb' bit is just a weird ending for a first name....

abitfunny · 02/09/2020 18:51

@whatausername - ridiculous reason. So people shouldn’t use names like Matthew, John, Gabriel etc etc too? My son is called Bodhi and although me and my husband love & follow many Buddhist values, we chose it because we simply liked the name and what it means. Like thousands of other people do. We actually took our son when he was small to a local Buddhist centre and the monks blessed him, praising us for using such a great name. No offence taken at all!

veeboo · 02/09/2020 18:59

Isla
Isabelle (necessary on a bicycle)
And I just know so many Eva/Evie/Mia
Pretty much all the top 10 girls names grate on me!
