Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

Well none of my DC names here so far but my dogs is Grin
Same, except it's my cat!

All the '-ayden' names. In all variations. Kayden/Kaden/Kaiden/Cayden, also starting with J and H. Tacky.

Jack. Every Jack I ever met as a nanny/nursery nurse was a little horror.

Stupid spellings of common names. I have no issue with Poppy, but a friend has a Poppie. No.

Tyler, Liam and Nathan. I find them ugly.

Too many of the same letter. Such as Annabella. Too many n', l's and a's. Just doesn't flow.

Nicknames as given names. Tommy, Archie, Billy, Evie Teddy. It infantalises the person.

People who treat naming their children as cute, especially when they have twins such as Teddy and Tilly, Albie and Alfie. What's wrong with Edward and Matilda, Albert and Alfred?

Not a fan of every sibling being the same initial either.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/08/2020 19:10

Jaxon. Hate it

SapphosRock · 21/08/2020 19:10

Ethan. Don't know why just really dislike it.

Also Matilda, Nancy, Polly.

formerbabe · 21/08/2020 19:10

Can't stand Juno either...everyone raves about it on here...IRL I've never known anyone name their child that.

Thefaceofboe · 21/08/2020 19:14

Hate Archie with a passion. Don’t know why but when I hear it I just think eugh. Also Louis, Jayden/Hayden etc, William, Toby, Sebastian, Charlie, Samuel and Max Grin

Girls I really don’t like Willow and Isla.

Chickydoo · 21/08/2020 19:15

PatchworkElmer · 21/08/2020 19:20

Surprised to see George mentioned!

I don’t like Ethan or Nathan. Also really dislike Amelia- it’s a medical condition for lacking one or more limbs, and I get stuck on that.

Agnes, Agatha - such an ugly sound. Can't understand posters who think that 'Aggie is a cute nickname'. The same goes for Edith and Enid. Not keen on Edwardian old lady names. I just see my great-aunts - Maudie, Lil, Vi, Edie, Gladys, Gertie.

Old Testament or names from Greek mythology, where people seem to have no idea of the story behind the name. e.g. Delilah. Why not go the whole hog and call your dd Jezebel? Phaedra, who fell in love with her gay stepson, and ultimately caused his death.

I wouldn't use Ophelia, either. It sounds nice but, until recently, was avoided because of its tragic associations.

Biblical names that sound or look ugly to me, like Leah, Eli and Noah.

I don't understand the trend to give girls boys' names, ironically usually by people who are looking for a 'strong, feisty name' for their dd. It seems like the reverse of feminism to think that a girl needs a boy's name to stand up for herself.

popples19 · 21/08/2020 19:28

Oops I have a Poppy Grin if im honest though I wouldn't pick it again. However i does suit her as she is a sensitive little girl.

I really hate double barreled especially if its lily-blah blah. Also Margot really itritates me for some reason.

SunshineCake · 21/08/2020 19:30

My child's middle name and my name have been mentioned. Not justified. Some others mentioned are awful and I agree.

SunshineCake · 21/08/2020 19:31

My child's middle name and my name are on here. Reasons given are very silly. I agree that the Brayden names and the stupid non unique spellings, Poppie Hmm are awful.

missmouse101 · 21/08/2020 19:33

Oh dear, so many:
Matilda, Edith, Emma, Emily, Charlotte, Mabel, Luna, Lyra, Grace, Mae, Rae, Nevaeh, Flora, Cora, Dorothy, Amelia (mealy...yuk!), Aurora, Ophelia, Morwenna, Francesca.

Rory, Kayden, David, James, Jago, Vincent, Oliver.

missmouse101 · 21/08/2020 19:36

Oh yes, Margo. Awful, like maggot. Lachlan too, looks like the sound you make bringing up phlegm.

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/08/2020 19:37

Aurelia - too nippley sounding
Aurora - dog chewing a toffee
Olive - on the buses/ugly
Pearl - peril

CathyNorth · 21/08/2020 19:37

Imogen

AngieBolen · 21/08/2020 19:39

My own name which is quite popular these days.

Thomas. Many of my friends have children called Thomas. It's just so dull. But my opinion is obviously in the minority on this.

Also Paige, Blair, Saul & Blanche because I just don't like the sound.

And totally, totally irrationally Reuben and Robin/Robyn

Really hope my friends don't know this is me

OLGADEEPOLGA · 21/08/2020 19:39

George
Henry
Elliot
Freddie
Evie

Just dull and boring

Nobeautysleep · 21/08/2020 19:40

Louis & Lewis!

unoeufisunoeuf1 · 21/08/2020 19:41

I'm surprised to find that I actually like most of the names mentioned in this thread!

The only one I can think of that I irrationally dislike is Fay / Faye. It just sounds so... fey. And a bit like the noise you might make if you had a bit of angora fluff stuck to your lips.

unoeufisunoeuf1 · 21/08/2020 19:43

@WaxOnFeckOff

Most hyphenated names usually with ae eg Lily-Mae, Tilly-Rae or even worse Blue as a hyphen eg Harley-Blue.

Unique names or random apostrophes. I realise I sound like a total name snob but in my defence 2 of my DC’s names have been mentioned so clearly my taste isn’t perfect Grin

Crunchymum · 21/08/2020 19:54

So far I've seen my name, DP name and both my DD's name Grin

Just DS to go for a full house!!
