Thinking of using Mae/May/Mai as a middle name for Clementine...

Firstly what do you think? And which spelling??

None of them.

Use Mary instead.

Mae is awful, Mai is pronounced My and is welsh for May.
May is a name given to girls born in that month or a pet form of Mary.

@MikeUniformMike Thanks, I've seen a number of your other helpful contributions on other posts...🤣

I think if you want to use it I would use the May spelling. Clementine is a classic so I would use a classic spelling.

HunkyPunk · 17/08/2020 15:12

If you're going to use May, definitely go for the proper spelling - May! Think Clementine May sounds lovely.

TinyMetalBirds · 17/08/2020 15:12

I would go for May. It seems to be a popular middle name, like Rose, but then again my middle name was given to every other girl in the 1970s (the others got Jane) and that has never been a problem!

Peachbubble · 17/08/2020 15:17

I'd choose May.

Raindrop87 · 17/08/2020 15:26

Oh I was thinking more Clementine Mae...seems against the general consensus!

Dreadful!

Clementine isn't great either. Sounds like an STD.

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/08/2020 16:30

How on earth does Clementine sound like an STD?!🤔

Raindrop87 · 17/08/2020 16:32

I've heard some things against Clementine on here and appreciate it's not to everyone's tastes but never that it sounds like a STD...🙈

Names are very personal! No STD association in my mind 😁

I would spell it May, like the month. Wink

DrFoxtrot · 17/08/2020 16:36

It's a bit of a 'filler' middle name, like Rose, Grace, Jane and Louise in the 70's. I regret using a similar name for my daughter's middle name and should have chosen something that meant something to me.

Although, May might mean something to you, in which case I would choose the spelling May.

NannyR · 17/08/2020 16:37

I like May best, not keen on Mae and Mai seems open to mispronunciation.
Although May is very overused as a middle name (but still pretty) I think it's a lovely, quite unusual choice for a first name.

Twizbe · 17/08/2020 16:39

Unless she's born in May, I'd use Mae for the spelling.

Totally me, but I dislike seeing children which seasonal or month names that weren't born then. I know an April that was born in Feb and so is likely to be named after when she was conceived ....

Raindrop87 · 17/08/2020 16:40

Yeah I get that May is a bit of a filler name, I'm struggling with ideas if I'm honest. I'm set on Clementine, just can't think of a nice middle name to go with it...

Palavah · 17/08/2020 16:42

Mary is a lovely name too.

How many syllables in the surname?

Raindrop87 · 17/08/2020 16:44

I've got to admit...I'm wracking my brains for which STD it sounds like! 🤣

OP posts:
Raindrop87 · 17/08/2020 16:45

@Palavah I'm not a fan of Mary... Surname is 3 syllables.

OP posts:
FelicityBob · 17/08/2020 16:46

I agree that Mai is a welsh name pronounced My

FelicityBob · 17/08/2020 16:47

Chlamydia I guess! But can’t say I’ve ever thought that
QuintusEstInHorto · 17/08/2020 16:47

Definitely May.

Mae feels affected and Mai sounds like My.

Raindrop87 · 17/08/2020 16:49

@FelicityBob Yeah I don't see the association either!

TheVanguardSix · 17/08/2020 16:52

May

Mai is the German month of May and is pronounced My.
Mae just looks wonky. It works for Rae but not May.
So I would stick with May or think about Rae or Faye.
Rhea is another name that might be one to consider.

perfumeistooexpensive · 17/08/2020 16:54

May/Mae is the most overused second name at the moment. I'd avoid it myself. Maria goes better with Clementine.

Sunhorse · 17/08/2020 16:54

Is it that you're feeling that the long first name needs a shorter middle name?

How about...

Clementine Zoe
Clementine Niamh
Clementine Rose
Clementine Anna
Clementine Joy
Clementine Eve
Clementine Hope
