I was wondering if there were any good more masculine names for my DD like Billie, Wren, etc??

@NameChange84

I think it’s quite misogynistic to intentionally saddle a female child with a male name. It’s like you are encouraging them to be more masculine because being feminine or indeed female is unacceptable and inferior to being male and masculine.

There are plenty of non frilly, strong sounding girls names that won’t make it seem like a rejection of her biological sex.

Interesting that we never see any threads about calling a son Martha or Caitlin or Francesca etc.

THIS!

I eagerly await the thread asking for feminine names for a boy...

Oh wait. Never happens.

NewNewt · 22/07/2020 22:18

Im with you too OP. I like masculine or unisex names for girls. Im absolutely sick of girly, frilly names for girls that encourage all that ridiculous princessy, pink, girly nonsense imo.

I think Wren is really girlie. I mean it's lovely but it's not masculine.

Jamie
Max
Alex
Robyn
Leslie
I mean they're l unisex anuway

NameChange30 · 22/07/2020 22:22

"girly nonsense" indeed!
Misogyny is alive and kicking
(And I'm not into the obsession with pink either... but it's very telling that some people hate pink and princesses but have no objection to blue and dinosaurs. Double standards.)

Lisette1940 · 22/07/2020 22:24

Anoisagusaris Gobnait?

Onestepup · 22/07/2020 22:25

No doubt you would also be happy to name a boy Jessica, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Susan, Violet or Angelina. So those are some boys' names you could give to a girl.

I think Marion was used as a boys' name at one stage.

NameChange84 · 22/07/2020 22:28

“Im absolutely sick of boyish, butch names for boys that encourage all that ridiculous soldiers/pirates , blue, boyish nonsense imo.”

@NameChange30 it doesn’t have the same ring does it? Wink

It’s only things pertaining to being female or feminine that we are allowed to sneer and be disparaging about isn’t it?

Unless it’s a boy of course that wants to have long hair, or wear an Elsa dress or a pink top.

It’s only nonsense when it’s a girl that likes these things on MN.

John Wayne's real name was Marion.

Marion - boy
Marian - girl

Or so I was told growing up!

NameChange30 · 22/07/2020 22:32

I couldn't agree more!

Lisette1940 · 22/07/2020 22:37

I think it is more commonly Marian for a girl but I went to school with a girl called Marion.

ImOnTheWrongPlanet · 22/07/2020 22:38

I have what's thought of as a traditionally masculine name and I love it. I prefer to think of it as a unisex name, and if people assume I'm a man they always seemed a bit old fashioned to me.

I love Artemis, Will and Hunter. I probably wouldn't use Bruce or Colin.

Lisette1940 · 22/07/2020 22:39

I also have a German friend who named her boy Marian!

Qwenzo · 22/07/2020 22:42
