I think it’s quite misogynistic to intentionally saddle a female child with a male name. It’s like you are encouraging them to be more masculine because being feminine or indeed female is unacceptable and inferior to being male and masculine.

There are plenty of non frilly, strong sounding girls names that won’t make it seem like a rejection of her biological sex.

Interesting that we never see any threads about calling a son Martha or Caitlin or Francesca etc.

iwontfloaaatt · 22/07/2020 15:02

@NameChange84 thank you! Finally someone gets it. It's totally sexist.

  • Sam (short for Samantha?)
  • Jools
  • Alex (short for Alexandra?)
MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2020 15:20

DS is Samantha, DD1 is called Nigel and DD2 is Jeremiah.

GarlicMcAtackney · 22/07/2020 15:20

Why did you spam the board with so many threads OP? You could have made one. Sabre Witch Man Surname 🙌

wivenbaskey · 22/07/2020 15:25

For me, giving a child a name that you more often associate with the opposite sex is something that will help a child stand out. I went to school with a male Kerry and Stacey (80's) and I thought they were so cool because their names bucked a trend. My son is dual nationality and has a N European first and surname and is always told how cool his name sounds, people remember him partly because of it.

Alex is fabulous name for a girl.

There are plenty of non frilly, strong sounding girls names that won’t make it seem like a rejection of her biological sex.

Indeed, lots of old-fashioned names that are not unisex but not trying too hard to sound girly either. More feminine names seem to be associated with an -ee or -ia or -a ending and likewise with real objects that are either gemstones, flowers, or "light" natural phenomena or concepts such as rain, spring, hope, love etc.

Elizabeth

Nigel.

TinyMetalBirds · 22/07/2020 15:48

Am I the only one who doesn’t think Wren sounds particularly masculine? I suppose because I think of Jenny Wren.

villamariavintrapp · 22/07/2020 16:04

Don't like the idea because it's sexist, but if you do then I'd pick a girls name with a more unisex nickname.

AragornsManlyStubble · 22/07/2020 16:27

I’m with you OP, I like masculine names ( or at least feminine versions of masculine names) and I don’t see an issue with it.

Not sure what I can suggest that’s solely masculine but my favourite feminine version of a name is Benjamina. I love Ben or Benji for a girl.

averylongtimeago · 22/07/2020 16:29

Hmm, no longer keen on Sabre or Sabrina then?
Why do you want to give your daughter a boys name?

MeadowHay · 22/07/2020 16:32

Robin spelled like this like the bird.
Repurposing something traditional like James or Jack (like Jack Monroe?).
Alex.
Athena? Not masculine per se but she was the Goddess of war not exactly feminine either.

Ellmau · 22/07/2020 16:37

Jocelyn

I always wanted to use Alex if I ever had a baby (I didn't end up having any kids) as a One Name Suits All situation is ideal for lazy buggers like me
