I love it, DH just did this Confused

Obviously I can’t use it but does anyone else like Hero as a girls’ name or is it objectively awful?

Agree! It couldn’t be less tacky imo.
Easy to spell and say and unusual but not weird. Perfect.

I would love to be called Hero!

MsTSwift · 04/06/2020 13:21

My other reservation applies to all the descriptive names - she might carry it off but what if she’s a low key under the radar type? She may hate it. Like the name Grace several we know ahem are the opposite and their name seem abit cruel

maddymellow · 04/06/2020 14:09

I would love to be called Hero too!

But everyone who hates it, don’t fret, I’ll never be allowed it anyway.

I think she’s going to be a Helena, we both really like it. Maybe I’ll try and make Hero stick as a nickname Wink

I think Hero is a lot to saddle a child with

Statistically your child is likely to be bang average and have an average office job. That's fine but a little awkward when they have to introduce themselves as "hero" to new friends and then when they have to tell them they got an average C grade for maths. Do you know what I mean?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 04/06/2020 15:36

Helena is lovely, OP.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/06/2020 17:02

Helena is beautiful

TurningPointe · 04/06/2020 17:06

I have a Hero. Only once in her teenage life have I had anyone say anything to me about her name, and it was at a supermarket checkout - so just washed over me as unimportant.

Nobody at her many school has ever batted an eyelid. Nobody asks her about it. Nobody has ever teased her. She is just a great teen with a lovely personality and she has always liked her name.

I doubt she'll get a C in maths this time around, but so bloody what? Grin

I do take her to see every production of Much Ado I can find or fun. There was one a couple of years ago at the globe where she wasn't a wimp and came across as a strong passionate woman.

Hero is DD middle name

Not that I care!

ChocolatelyAsFuck · 04/06/2020 17:29

I can’t imagine any hypothetical situation where it’s necessary to tell friends your maths GCSE grade.

I think people are forgetting that a baby born this year will grow up with peers named Kumquat, Texas, π r2, all kinds of weird shit.

A lot of posters on name threads project and imagine what their own upbringing would have been like with that name, forgetting that there have been huge cultural shifts since then. And MN is quite middle class but not always well-educated, which is why names from foreign cultures or from literature tend to be sneered at.

jokolo · 04/06/2020 18:00

Oh I do all the time because I got a U! Grin

No one can believe it (I have a very mathy job).

Thisismytimetoshine · 04/06/2020 18:03

A very mathy job...

Onceateacher · 04/06/2020 18:07

Chocolatey you'd be surprised how few "out there" names there are in most school classes. It's not the norm by any means. A number of names that might seem unusual but are simply popular in a different culture, and a few rather unusual spellings - a really weird name is very rare.

ChocolatelyAsFuck · 04/06/2020 18:18

Newborns aren’t in school classes.

Where I am, “out there” names are the norm, so there’s probably a geographic and cultural element too.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 04/06/2020 18:25

I love it - one of my favourite books has a heroine called Hero Wantage.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 04/06/2020 18:31

How about Kitten? (Private joke for @jokolo @TheFaerieQueene @TangibleTuTu)

jokolo · 04/06/2020 18:32

@Thisismytimetoshine Yes?

jokolo · 04/06/2020 18:34

Heee! Now, Kitten, that really is a bit of a burden. (What about Venetia? Or the Grand Sophy?)

Sorry, OP, slightly going off piste. Helena and Caroline are also both lovely.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 04/06/2020 18:43

@jokolo Grin Venetia would be my fave out of them, I reread The Grand Sophy recently and it made for rather uncomfortable reading.

DryIce · 04/06/2020 19:02

I love Hero! I'd love to have used it, but I had boys and my husband had a similar reaction to yours.

The kind of reaction all over this thread did put me off a bit, tbh. Which is sad because no one warns you off the ubiquitous Bella or Grace because "it's a lot to live up to".

If I had another maybe I'd be braver!

SecondaryBurnzzz · 04/06/2020 19:11

@milienhaus Phaedra is lovely - Fay for short?

FatalSecrets · 04/06/2020 19:14

Hester or Leonie are rather lovely Heyer names Grin

Annis is on my list too.

ValancyRedfern · 04/06/2020 19:15

Love love love it! Dp wouldn't let me.

jokolo · 04/06/2020 19:17

@Seco

I wondered what you could mean and have now discovered that book has a whole racist segment that was edited out of newer editions. I had no idea! What a shame.

HelenaJustina · 04/06/2020 19:18

Love it. Love Friday’s Child and Much Ado.

HelenaJustina · 04/06/2020 19:20

And I have a Helena... she is funny, so loving, compassionate and all round gorgeous.
