I love it, DH just did this Confused

Obviously I can’t use it but does anyone else like Hero as a girls’ name or is it objectively awful?

In a country where people have called their child things like Chardonnay and Khaleesi, Hero seems positively ordinary. Grin

Sorry, I think it’s going to be hard for the average girl to pull off! Suki is nice but I did go to school with one and she wasn’t very popular and she was nicknamed Sucky. Kids are so lovely!

How about Honor?

FamilyOfAliens · 03/06/2020 16:01

I also like Susanna(h) with Suki for short but he hates Suki too

How are you getting Suki from Susannah? Where does the letter k come in?

Grufallosfriends · 03/06/2020 16:11

Sukanna Wink

maddymellow · 03/06/2020 16:25

Suki is an established nickname for Susanna... at least, I thought it was. Doubting myself now!

Love Cleo, but he says it sounds like a cats name.

! Cleo is pretty. Clara also?

TangibleTuTu · 03/06/2020 16:29

I read a lot of my mum's Georgette Heyer's books (Romance novels set in the Regency period) and the heroines all had suitably romantic names including one called Hero. I was tempted at the time (1980 age 12) but then I actually had kids and realised how my 12 yr old fantasy names may not play so well for my child in the real world. Still quite like Hero but it does feel a tad try hard/statement name/conceited that could be hard to pull off. You don't want your child to have a name that builds them up so much that people are disappointed when they meet them. It's like being called Chastity or Thor, it's a lot to live up to!

No

Pudding01 · 03/06/2020 21:30

No

ladycarlotta · 03/06/2020 22:40

Yes, Suki/e is a very traditional nn for Susannah. I love it.

I also love Hero, although I find the story of Hero and Leander a bit off-puttingly depressing.

FamilyOfAliens · 03/06/2020 22:50

Well, what do you know - just googled it and you’re right.

But Poosan and Subo are also nicknames for Susannah ... Grin

I think Hero is a lot to live up to. Hera however is lovely

Aclh13 · 04/06/2020 02:47

No sorry love Hera more if necessary despite the connotations being potentially more arrogant x

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 04/06/2020 02:48

I’m a thesp so I love it

CayrolBaaaskin · 04/06/2020 03:02

Sounds like a dog food

clpsmum · 04/06/2020 03:48

Love it

jokolo · 04/06/2020 07:07

Hera was a massive arse tho.

MsTSwift · 04/06/2020 07:09

Imagine a day in your life where you meet new people professionally and are called Hero. There’s your answer.

MsTSwift · 04/06/2020 07:10

We have very good associations with Cleo. The one we know is a super girl. I’d go for that

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/06/2020 08:09

@theotherfossilsister

Someone else's suggestion of Calypso is lovely.
It was me. I suggest it on every name thread. I’ve never met one. It was in a Mary Wesley book and I love it.
SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 04/06/2020 08:30

I think a lot of it depends on how posh you are, tbh. If I was living on Sloane Square I'd probably use Hero. As I'm living on an ex council estate in North Yorkshire, I didn't!

okiedokieme · 04/06/2020 08:46

Ick- give kids proper names that won't make future employers think Hmm! Tacky in the extreme - if an odd name is liked, use it as a middle name at least

jokolo · 04/06/2020 09:26

I'm so entertained by how mad people are about Hero. Grin

I'm tempted to conceive a child just in order to name her Hero now.

OutingMyself · 04/06/2020 11:19

I can't work out why I hate it so much. I think I'd actually prefer Khaleesi.

AliasGrape · 04/06/2020 11:42

I know, it’s cracking me up.

People saying it’s tacky, masculine, not a ‘proper’ name - it’s an establish woman’s name that probably predates a lot of the ‘classic’ names that are suggested on here.

I actually love it more after this thread but DH will never, ever agree so I’ll have to earmark it for a future pet or pot plant or something!
