I love it, DH just did this Confused

Obviously I can’t use it but does anyone else like Hero as a girls’ name or is it objectively awful?

NN Caro for Caroline?

Farontothemaddingcrowd · 02/06/2020 22:15

If the child is very shy, as a previous poster suggested - the Shakespearean version wasn’t exactly brash.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/06/2020 22:15

I also feel a re-read of Friday's Child coming on...

daisypond · 02/06/2020 22:19

Caroline / Caro is great.

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2020 01:02

Love it.

ouch321 · 03/06/2020 01:22

Not at all.

May as well call her Fantastic!

May as well call her Fantastic!

Why? I don’t understand.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/06/2020 05:56

It's Greek originally. Read the story of Hero and Leander.

I love the name.

lemmathelemmin · 03/06/2020 06:10

You'll end up raising a narcissist.

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 03/06/2020 06:12

Love the name Hero

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 03/06/2020 06:18

Just cringingly awful. Why would you?!?!

pilates · 03/06/2020 06:26

Awful

ShirleyB25 · 03/06/2020 06:32

Instead of saying awful - I will say that the name Hero is dreadful. It's pretentious and does not even sound like a name.

At all. Poor girl, having to explain every time about the Greek roots to her name, bla bla.

jokolo · 03/06/2020 06:43

Why should she have to explain.

Never apologise, never explain, Hero! Grin

maddymellow · 03/06/2020 07:34

I do like Helena and Caro/Caroline. Will have to work on DH! Thanks all Smile

So does your DH get to veto every single one of your name choices but expects you to pick one of his that you don’t like?

I love Jennifer, btw. It’s a proper, strong name which wouldn’t have the ridiculous baggage of a name like Hero.

daisypond · 03/06/2020 07:38

Poor girl, having to explain every time about the Greek roots to her name, bla bla.

Why would she have to explain? Most people will know of either the Greek story or at least the Shakespeare character. Just like people don’t need to explain about Penelope or Ophelia.

SiaPR · 03/06/2020 07:40

I have twins; Hero and Georgie (very outing) so not only did I commit the heinous mumsnet crime of giving one a pretentious name, I also gave them names that don’t match! 😂😂

Spied · 03/06/2020 07:53

I like it. I also like Perdita.

whenwillthemadnessend · 03/06/2020 08:06

I adore byrione but DH hated it.

Hero is fab I love it. It's certainly not the worst name about. It's is a bit Marmite though.

Personally I think bear is ridiculous but that getting really popular.

PuntoEBasta · 03/06/2020 08:11

Shakespeare’s Hero has a really terrible time at the hands of the man that she has to marry anyway which puts it into the same ‘unusable’ category as Ophelia for me.

It’s a shame you can’t have Juno. How about Phoebe? Still Greek and classical but perhaps less likely to scare the horses / DH.

itssquidstella · 03/06/2020 08:12

I like it!

SoberCurious · 03/06/2020 08:17

No

backseatcookers · 03/06/2020 08:19

It's one of those names that is a hell of a lot to live up to because many, many (most?) people won't know the Shakespeare reference so will just think of Hero in the general sense of the word.

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/06/2020 08:21

I'm surprised by people's reactions. I see it as classic , known, easy to spell and manage and has the bonus of Shakespeare connection; how about Rosalind or Portia ?
