Does anyone else like Hero for a girl?

I love it, DH just did this Confused

Obviously I can’t use it but does anyone else like Hero as a girls’ name or is it objectively awful?

These threads are so amusing to me. As a teacher, I can assure you the name Hero would not stand out as being that different. Kids are named all number of things these days - some completely made up by the parents. I'm also in a few baby groups on Facebook and, again, Hero would sound positively boring in comparison to some of the names on there! Contrary to what mn seems to think, children are called things other than Lily, Mia, Olivia and Ivy.

FatalSecrets · 03/06/2020 08:39

Absolutely love it. A character in one of my favourite book series was named Hero.

On my list for sure!

maddymellow · 03/06/2020 08:42

I'm doing my fair share of vetoing too, don't worry! Just trying to settle on something we both like.

Helena has got the thumbs up from him and I like it a lot, so that's a front runner now. I'm also coming round on Caroline with Caro for short. Maybe classic full name/quirky nickname is the way to go. I also like Susanna(h) with Suki for short but he hates Suki too Sad

I clicked on this thread hoping that there would be some mention of Hero Wantage and I’m not disappointed.

I much prefer your taste in names to your husband’s. Lucy and Georgina are OK (and I actually really like Caroline!) but Jennifer and Gemma are very dated.

I love Hero as a name (Much Ado About Nothing is my favourite Shakespeare play) and it doesn’t put me off that she’s not exactly full of personality. I might be put off a bit by her awful treatment from Claudio and the fact that she still happily marries him though!

I personally wouldn’t go for Hera, either. Not the most sympathetic of ‘people’ to name your child after, and I don’t think she had a massively happy existence either.

ArriettyJones · 03/06/2020 08:53

I love it, but I was at school with a very clever and beautiful girl called Hero, so it probably feels more “real” as a name to me as a result.

Realistically, Hera is much more useable.

milienhaus · 03/06/2020 08:55

Zanna for Susanna?
Otherwise Phaedra.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 03/06/2020 09:23

I think Caroline is due a comeback. It's so elegant. And feminine without the ubiquitous 'a' or 'ee' ending sound - as a teacher the last few years of reading the register has just been a never ending repeat of "ee" "ah" "ee" "ee" "aa" sounds at the end of almost all the girls' names and it gets really bloody annoying!

maddymellow · 03/06/2020 09:32

Yes I do like that about Caroline too, it just reminds me of quite a few people I went to school with! But I'm really loving Caro and I do like that it's feminine without being "girly" (for want of a better word)

I like it Smile

backseatcookers · 03/06/2020 09:55

One of my favourite people is called Caro, short for Caroline. Absolutely love it.

backseatcookers · 03/06/2020 09:56

Also Cleo is lovely, would you and your DH maybe like that?

theotherfossilsister · 03/06/2020 09:56

Yes. I love it.

theotherfossilsister · 03/06/2020 10:02

Someone else's suggestion of Calypso is lovely.

IdblowJonSnow · 03/06/2020 10:05

I like Hera and Helena is beautiful.
Caroline is elegant but for some reason Caro sounds dreadful (to me!)
Names are so subjective!

theotherfossilsister · 03/06/2020 10:07

How about Xanthe? Means golden. I see her with black hair though.

MrsCollinssettled · 03/06/2020 10:15

It's a lot to live up to. I would think the majority wouldn't get the Shakespeare reference. It would be like calling a boy Adonis.

AcrobaticCardigan · 03/06/2020 10:54

No. Very masculine & try hard.

OutingMyself · 03/06/2020 10:58

Personally think it's the worst name suggestion I've ever read on here. Absolutely awful.

I actually met a little girl called Heroine once Confused

WildCherryBlossom · 03/06/2020 11:21

I wouldn't choose it personally as it sounds slightly masculine to my ear even though I know it is a female name. In Latin languages "o" is a masculine sound. A lot of Japanese women's names sound masculine to me too: Yoko, Kimiko etc etc.

However it would be really dull if we all chose the same names. One of my DDs names features on an MN list recently and the vast majority disliked it. Didn't bother me as I love it and most importantly she loves it.

autumnkate · 03/06/2020 13:20

I absolute love it and love Suki too.

Good luck avoiding Gemma Confused

Shock what happened there?

daisypond · 03/06/2020 14:42

Good luck avoiding Gemma
Gemma is one of those names, like Tiffany, that, surprisingly, to me at least when I discovered it, is a really old name from the Middle Ages.
