My husband wants to call the new baby after the cat ...

So finally getting DH to start at least thinking about baby names with a couple of weeks to go, and after crossing off the unappealing Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot style names he likes, we finally have a short list.. one of which is the cat’s name Confused

Could people please critique, say which your favourite is, or suggest anything else we might like? We don’t really love any of them... we have a Kitty and a Rafe already and I’d like a name that ‘goes’.

Maxim
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?)
Mungo (the cat Blush)
Jonty
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though)

Please help!

Crikey, not Mungo. I also just accidentally typed Mongo, which is an unfortunate think he could be teased with too...

I like Ivo (eye-vo) and had it on our list early on.
I think your others are fine but I think I'd want a new name rather than an existing child's middle name.

UsainDolt · 30/04/2020 13:01

Monty?

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2020 14:06

"Mungo" would likely become the disgusting "mong" for school bullies or frenemies

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 30/04/2020 14:23

Aaah what a wonderful thread, it really entertained me Grin

FizzyGreenWater · 30/04/2020 15:40

Magnus, Monty, Malcolm are all good M names.

Really dislike Ivo - I've no idea which way you'd pronounce it - I think you'll get people plumping for both which will be infuriating. And it's so nothing - it looks like an anagram for a company to me!

Thorfinn

Jago is great but NO to an existing middle name.

Kim

Jonty also good

Jolyon?

LotusClover · 30/04/2020 15:42

Oh gosh no, no, please no. Do NOT name your child Mungo! Shock

Jonty is nice and fits well with your other DCs names. Not keen on the other names on your list. But literally anything other than Mungo will do!

user1497787065 · 30/04/2020 15:47

Does Mungo have a hidden m among that I am not aware of? I thought it one of the best on your list but as everyone else is reacting with horror I'm wondering if I'm missing something???

Poodles03 · 30/04/2020 15:53

This thread title made me laugh out loud for some reason.

And Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot sound utterly ridiculous, even for a cat.

Lightofthephoenix · 30/04/2020 16:08

Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer
We're a notorious couple of cats
As knockabout clowns, quick-change comedians
Tight-rope walkers and acrobats
We have an extensive reputation
We make our home in Victoria Grove
This is merely our centre of operation
For we are incurably given to rove

Honeyroar · 30/04/2020 16:39

Yes I mentioned Mary, Mungo and Midge, t’was before my time too, but the name took me back!😁

CountFosco · 30/04/2020 19:17

Even Murdo sounds pretty good with a thick Taggart accent.

😍 Murdo. Unfortunately we live in England and I always think English people sound like they are shitting themselves when saying Scottish names with a 'ur' sound. We vetoed Kirsten for the same reason.

Kester, Hector, and Kentigern all very cool as well. Suspect I'll become of those dreadful DM/MIL who say 'oh, what about name X for grandchild, I much prefer it to your choice'.

Stingeray · 30/04/2020 19:20

Magnus?

Justhavinganosy · 30/04/2020 19:50

Roscoe
Ivor
Irvin
Seb
Jax

sibbys · 30/04/2020 19:52

Maxim is a porn magazine!!!

Cissyandflora · 30/04/2020 22:14

After reading the whole thread I think you should go with Mungo after all. And then you can ask people guess which one was named after the cat? No not kitty.

YahBasic · 30/04/2020 22:22

Love Kester, Jago and Tristan.

Valentin and Torin came to mind too.

Queenest · 03/05/2020 16:14

How about Wilfred?!

NamechangeObvis · 04/05/2020 10:25

Love Kester, DH has vetoed
Love(d) Wilford, DH has vetoed and it’s now firmly off my list 😆
Like Jolyon but our surname ends in an -on sound so it sounds wrong

Maxim's great. The rest, not so (Jonty's OK but I would give him Jonathan as a full name so he can shake off the extremely UMC aura if he so chooses).

I like Torin as per a PP.

Juno231 · 04/05/2020 11:40

How about Wilf instead if Wilfred? Juno? Jude (I think it goes with Rafe)?

HelloItsmeAgain1 · 04/05/2020 20:32

Maxim is cute

SarahTTCx · 06/05/2020 15:08

This post can't be real, can it? Mungo isn't a name (I wouldn't even say for a cat!!!)

I'm really not much a fan of any of your choices but that may just be due to a difference in taste. I'd say out of your options, Ivo is the best and goes the best with your current kids names.

Jonty is so stereotypically snobby to me, i'm not sure how Jago is pronounced (Jay-go or Jah-go?) but it's not terrible. Maxim is so blunted to me. And Mungo is definitely not a name, please don't do that to the child!

EastMidsMumOf1 · 06/05/2020 15:11

Mary, mungo and midge is the first thing that came to mind - I'm young btw but it was a very popular TV series in the early 70s, so my mum tells me!

notalwaysalondoner · 06/05/2020 15:12

Mungo is a name, my sister knew one as a teenager about ten years ago. First time I’d come across it. They owned a castle in Wales to give you some context...

I like Ivo (it’s always pronounced eye-vo if you’re British isn’t it?) and Maxim. Not a fan of Jago but it’s ok. Jonty is a bit pretentious but I can see why you’d like it.
