My husband wants to call the new baby after the cat ...

So finally getting DH to start at least thinking about baby names with a couple of weeks to go, and after crossing off the unappealing Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot style names he likes, we finally have a short list.. one of which is the cat’s name Confused

Could people please critique, say which your favourite is, or suggest anything else we might like? We don’t really love any of them... we have a Kitty and a Rafe already and I’d like a name that ‘goes’.

Maxim
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?)
Mungo (the cat Blush)
Jonty
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though)

Please help!

I'm pretty liberal and accepting with baby names but mungo is unreal?!

iklboo · 29/04/2020 21:03

Mungo. Middle name Jerry. Grin

Maybe Mingo was a typo and the I should be an o? Horrible.

Whatsyourflava · 29/04/2020 21:04

Kitty and Rafe are nice. Seems like you like pretty unusual names, how about:

Marley
Barnaby
Kit
Sidney or just Sid
Rudy/Rudi
Otto
Bodhi
Cole
Chester
Tristan
Otis
Eric
Dexter
Angus
Percy
Idris
Griff

Ooh I do like jonty 😃

NamechangeObvis · 29/04/2020 21:05

Sadly not joking, PP. mungo was originally my preferred name for my first who was luckily a girl! Milo is a lovely name... it’s our other cat Grin I just don’t want to be the family who ran out of names so called the baby the same as the cat Blush nice to see Maxim and Ivo and top for some, I think they are my favourites. We don’t want anything massively popular so Alfie style names are out - we discounted Rory, Felix and Hugo for this reason.

I like your names. I don’t get the dislike for Mungo.
I thought Ivo was pronounced EE-vo

Tristan
Marcus
Lucien
Jerome
Bertram
Inigo
Barnaby
Alban
Peter
Hugh

NamechangeObvis · 29/04/2020 21:07

We have a Monty and a Luca in the family already 😑 I like Tristan...

Is Jonty a posh name in England/the rest of the UK?

I'm from NI and Jonty (pronounced Janty in our accent) is the name of the local drug dealer and general roughkin

Windyatthebeach · 29/04/2020 21:08

I have a Cyrus.
Better than Minge - oops sorry Mungo..
Grin

HandfulOfFlowers · 29/04/2020 21:08

Of your list, Ivo. Mungo - nice name for a cat, ridiculous name for a person!

UnderTheIroningBoard · 29/04/2020 21:09

I don't particular like any of those names to be honest (although why should you care what I think!) but Mungo is just dreadful.
Don't name your child after the cat, OP.

Orphlids · 29/04/2020 21:09

I find Aethelstan most appealing! If your husband likes that, then yes, as a PP has suggested, Magnus might appeal to him. Or Rollo, Tristan, Uther... all have a nice bit of history to them.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 29/04/2020 21:09

Oh, OP, I'm so desperately sorry! But I bloody hope your OH is handsome because I may have fallen slightly in love with him for a) providing me with a good laugh during an utterly horrifying day and b) being a kindred spirit for considering Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot. I fantasise about calling my hypothetical sons that. (Luckily for DD, she's a girl, has a sensible father and got off comparatively lightly with "Ophelia" as a middle name.)

Having said that, Mungo is a step too far even for me! Grin

Seconding Tristan, though (also a cat, a childhood favourite, but altogether less cringeworthy in humans).

seriousandloyal · 29/04/2020 21:10

Maxim is the nicest of your list by far. Definitely not Mungo please!

user1493494961 · 29/04/2020 21:13

Like all the names on the list except for Mungo, keep it for the cat. I would pronounce Eye-vo. Much prefer Maxim to Maximillian.

OntheWaves40 · 29/04/2020 21:13

Hate mungo and jonty.

Ivo is best one on list but I pronounce eye vo

MitziK · 29/04/2020 21:14

Jago's Cornish.

Tristan.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 29/04/2020 21:16

Maxim just reminds me of the men's mag with semi naked women splashed all over it

Mungo is great for a cat

ivfgottostaypositive · 29/04/2020 21:16

If your husband liked that name why didn't he save it until you had boy rather than call the cat it???

It would be too confusing for the child and the cat!

KatherineJaneway · 29/04/2020 21:17

Maxim - Meh
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?) - definitely pronounced Eye vo
Mungo (the cat blush) - Mary and Midge
Jonty - a cat or cow's name
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though) - Meh

Maxim magazine: "Catering to the modern man with content that promises to seduce, entertain and continuously surprise readers."
Noooooo

OhhhPeee · 29/04/2020 21:17

Is that you, Carrie?

Mmsnet101 · 29/04/2020 21:19

Do you live in Glasgow? I. E. St Mungo reference? it is more known here I think vs elsewhere because of that. Still not a fan though.

Cyberworrier · 29/04/2020 21:20

How about Sinjun, written Saint-John?or Lysander? Or Clement?
Tristan is good!
(Maxim is a pet in my family but that shouldn’t put you off!)

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 29/04/2020 21:22

Maxim just reminds me of the men's mag with semi naked women splashed all over it

Even worse: Maxim is Maxim de Winter. The guy who murders Rebecca, snags himself a pathologically insecure, young second wife and somehow manages to paint himself as the victim for having offed her predecessor.

One of the most ghastly characters in all of English literature!
