My husband wants to call the new baby after the cat ...

So finally getting DH to start at least thinking about baby names with a couple of weeks to go, and after crossing off the unappealing Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot style names he likes, we finally have a short list.. one of which is the cat’s name Confused

Could people please critique, say which your favourite is, or suggest anything else we might like? We don’t really love any of them... we have a Kitty and a Rafe already and I’d like a name that ‘goes’.

Maxim
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?)
Mungo (the cat Blush)
Jonty
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though)

Please help!

My cats name is Monty (short for Montgomery sp) his brother is Mr Rigby

I like Ivo

Vote in favour of Mungo - it's a nice name with a long pedigree.

ladycarlotta · 29/04/2020 23:12

I really like Ivo. Pronounced either way - I've met both.
Maxim I only like because you can shorten it to Max, I also make the De Winter connection and it's not a good one to my mind.

Jago and Mungo are off the table because it's not fair to take them back off the child or the cat, OR to make them share.

I like PPs suggestions of Roscoe and did I see Rollo? I would add Odo and Wulfric, Woolfie for short. Very much thinking along the lines of pre-Conquest bishops.

JKScot4 · 29/04/2020 23:14

Very confusing when you’re calling the cat in 😺

CountFosco · 29/04/2020 23:14

I like Mungo but I went to Glasgow Uni so know the story of the fish, the tree, the bird and the bell. Spot the racism against the Scots on this thread though!

Other less common Scottish names:
Sholto
Balfour
Torquil
Ronald
Murdock

CountFosco · 29/04/2020 23:15

Sorry, that should have been Ranald in that list!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/04/2020 23:15

Mungo Mary and Midge...

Jonty is alright but the one I know is Jonathan.

Maxim is pretty cool.

CoffeeRunner · 29/04/2020 23:17

Ivo is fine - I would pronounce it eye-vo.

Or Monty.

Not Mungo though. I think it’s even borderline animal cruelty to call a cat Mungo!

MysweetAudrina · 29/04/2020 23:18

I'm just laughing at the fact that you have a child called Kitty and she is the one not named after the cat.

RickOShay · 29/04/2020 23:24

I was just going to suggest Sholto @CountFosco Smile
Great name.
Also
Inigo

Conrad

Gabriel

orangeicecream · 29/04/2020 23:31

Amazingly I know two boys called Mungo and too my knowledge there's been no teasing.

Other suggestions:
Angus
Herbert (Herbie)
Nate (Nathaniel)
Toby
Timothy

anxietrist · 29/04/2020 23:38

Is mungo the giant gingerbread man from shrek? I think that's the only time I've ever heard it. I just keep picturing an introduction where you say "this is my son mungo and this is my cat...mungo." (because people introduce their cats to visitors right?)

pissedoffwithprojects · 29/04/2020 23:47

Mungo is fine. Maxim is a lads mag.

I accidentally named my cat my favourite boys name and seriously considered changing the cat's name. Luckily I had girls so crisis averted!!

WhiteHairReally · 29/04/2020 23:57

Lynda and Robert Snell in ‘The Archers’ have a five year old grandson called Mungo and he was to be called Mowgli ( as in ‘The Jungle Book’ Spelling?)so it was generally thought Mungo was a better bet.

I’m offering Kester.

JKScot4 · 29/04/2020 23:58

@MysweetAudrina
Exactly 🤣

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/04/2020 00:04

Murdo instead?

Neednewwellies · 30/04/2020 00:06

Are you Scottish, specifically Glasgow? My husband is from Glasgow and his school was St Mungo’s. I’d never heard the name but DH informed me that St Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow so lots of Mungo refs there apparently. I think Ivo (I’d pronounce it eye-vo) is Scottish too, isn’t it or maybe I just think that because one of the Scottish twins from childhood of our time is called, Ivo. I like Ivo but certainly not Mungo.

averytiredmom · 30/04/2020 00:12

Ivo

starfishmummy · 30/04/2020 00:17

Well you have a daughter named after cats (kitty) so I dont see the problem...

slipperywhensparticus · 30/04/2020 00:19

When harry and Meghans baby name was announced I pissed myself laughing it was my sisters cats name

BilboBercow · 30/04/2020 00:38

Clearly you live in a far naicer area than me op. Young Mungo would get the shit kicked out of him at school and be constantly called a horrible disablist name where I am.

JKScot4 · 30/04/2020 00:44

@BilboBercow
Agreed, I grew up in Glasgow, wee Mungos life would’ve been a misery.

LostInTheColonies · 30/04/2020 01:14

Are you in Scotland OP?
I quite like Mungo, Ivo, and Jago. Don't really understand the Mungo hatred! Even Murdo sounds pretty good with a thick Taggart accent.

What about:
Kester
Hector
Iolo

Good luck deciding Grin

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/04/2020 01:15

St Mungo's name was actually Kentigern wasn't it?

So you could use his proper name for the baby, and his pet name for the pet!

Zoflorabore · 30/04/2020 02:51

My ds (now 17) is named after my mum’s best friend’s cat. I just happened to like the name.
