My husband wants to call the new baby after the cat ...

So finally getting DH to start at least thinking about baby names with a couple of weeks to go, and after crossing off the unappealing Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot style names he likes, we finally have a short list.. one of which is the cat’s name Confused

Could people please critique, say which your favourite is, or suggest anything else we might like? We don’t really love any of them... we have a Kitty and a Rafe already and I’d like a name that ‘goes’.

Maxim
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?)
Mungo (the cat Blush)
Jonty
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though)

Please help!

Those of you banging on about Mungo being associated with Jerry, how is that likely to be a problem when the child (and his peers) will be born in 2020 - half the kids I know haven’t even heard of the Beatles.

Mumwith4kidzz · 30/04/2020 03:08

@NamechangeObvis I really really love Ivo! But please for the love of god do not name your child Mungo. You're cat has a lovely name I just don't think it would be good for a child! Good luck on your decision.

Cosmo
River

Milo is a very common dog name. Our dog is called Milo. He is lovely

Hugh Grant aka High John Mungo Grant.

The name’s been around forever.

Name your baby what you like, but don’t give it the same name as another household member (human or not) unless you mean to distinguish them in some way (eg Richard and his son, little Dicky).

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 30/04/2020 04:54

Jonty. For the only reason I have INCREDIBLY happy memories lying in a playing field with a Jonty circa 1993.

Reginabambina · 30/04/2020 04:58

You don’t want a perfectly normal name like Athelstan but Jonty is ok?

JuneJuly · 30/04/2020 05:11

From your list I think Ivo (eye-vo) suits your other dc's names & sounds best with them.

I would also suggest:
Cole
Austin
Fraser
Eben
Fenton
Murray
Will...&...
Grover - my very favourite name for a boy, which I didn't use as I had girls & dh would have vetoed it anyway!

WitchWife · 30/04/2020 05:13

“ Don't name your child after the cat, OP.” Grin

Mmm on a Cornish theme how about Morgan? Carn? Trevelyan?

I also like Blaise which I think sounds nice with your other kids’ names.

Helios? Leander? Beowulf?

Starting to enjoy myself now.

Womanlywiles · 30/04/2020 05:30

We have a Raphaela (Raf, Raffa) and a Gabriel (Gabe) and they seem to really go well together.

MikeUniformMike · 30/04/2020 06:59

Maxim - like it a lot
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?) - Eevo. Not keen
Mungo (the cat blush) - If it is good enough for James and Coriander... I'd guess an association with Glasgow. Might be confusing to have two Mungos and the cat was there first.
Jonty - as a nn for Jonathan I like it a lot
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though) - you've already used it. Makes me think of Sago.

userabcname · 30/04/2020 07:36

I like Maxim or Ivo.

BeMoreZenLike · 30/04/2020 08:22

Carrie, is that you love?

pinkpinecone · 30/04/2020 08:28

NotTheOnlyPomInTheVillage · 30/04/2020 08:31

Was your DH a Mary, Mungo & Midge fan?

FeedMeSantiago · 30/04/2020 08:33

Don't give your DS the same name as your cat. Mungo makes me think of St Mungo's hospital in Harry Potter, the one Neville Longbottom's parents, Frank and Alice, live after being tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange and co.

I've never heard Ivo spoken out loud but would have said Eye-vo. It goes with Kitty and Rafe.

I like Jago, it's Cornish for James. It also goes with Kitty and Rafe, but I would try and find a name you haven't already given another DC as a middle name if you can.

Jonty feels very posh to me. It does go with Rafe and Kitty though.

Maxim is nice but the magazine puts me off a bit.

I think Ivo is my favourite.

NamechangeObvis · 30/04/2020 09:08

Grin thanks all, DH has woken this morning, read the thread and decided Mungo should stick as the cats name (incidentally @GoatyGoatyMingeMinge the cat also is a long pedigree Grin)

Can’t have Jonathan and use Jonty the nickname as my brother is Jonathan and he’s not an especially pleasant person (we’re so low contact as to be essentially NC) a shame as it’s a nice name but still.

PP - my children go to the local state school not private and this is why I had to veto a lot of DH other choices as I think you could pull them off if privately schooled, or living in London perhaps - but not here!

Rollo - love it but it’s the name of a friends little boy.. I love Viggo along the same lines but DH hates it. Ivo still my fave I think, DH prefers Jago this morning Hmm

Hadn’t thought of the magazine connection with Maxim, I was thinking along the lines of strong Slavic name 🤔

Love Blaise and Morgan but only ever known females ones so they’re out for me.

Love Gabriel but DH has vetoed!

People keep saying Mary, Mungo and Midge - it’s before my time, DH grew up abroad so we’ve never heard of it, is it really a thing forty odd years later?

NamechangeObvis · 30/04/2020 09:15

Just looked it up - 50 years later? Shock

TitilatedOcelot · 30/04/2020 09:30

Tristan is a great name, with Cornish connections. I am biased though.

Out of your list, I like Jago and Maxim best.

BeMoreZenLike · 30/04/2020 12:06

Max or Ivo are deffo the best.

Other long versions of Max are:

Maximilian
Maxwell
Massimo
Maximus
Massimiliano
Maximiliano
Maximilien

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/04/2020 12:09

All of these names sound like cat names to me.

Nombie · 30/04/2020 12:12

None are appealing to me tbh but had to chime
in that when I was in school (not defending this but it's true) mungo / mong is what some people use as a name for disabled (mentally) people or as a mean bully word. So I'd not do that if you wish you child to survive school with any shred of sanity.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 30/04/2020 12:35

Jethro?!

Tremayne.

Troy.

Trelawney.

MillicentMartha · 30/04/2020 12:48

Jethro! He did cross my mind. Apparently in the Cornish comedian’s case it’s a nickname for Geoff Rowe!
