Hi fellow mums! I'm new to the site, not too sure how it all works LOL
I have always been a massive Oasis fan (sorry Blur fans) and they have influenced me and inspired me throughout my entire life, so when i found out i was having two little twin boys, i thought it would be amazing to name them after the Gallagher brothers! I thought it was a sweet idea, but people seem to frown and laugh thinking it's a joke!! Have to say it does hurt a bit. All the best, Catherine xx

The way to view it OP is that it’s probably only going to be a very short part of their lives that they will actually ‘come as a pair’ so to speak and they are perfectly functional names individually .

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:41

@Orphlids Thanks hun! We did choose them expecting a little laugh out of it, of course, but people are a little ott with the comments on their names! Lots of love to you x

Well, better to have Liam and Noel than two names from GOT.

Cheeeeislifenow · 29/04/2020 17:45

You must have considered the possibility of people thinking it's a bit odd surely?

SeasonFinale · 29/04/2020 17:46

Oh what a shame - you should have gone for Bill and Ben

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:46

@Cheeeeislifenow Of course! We did choose them expecting a little giggle here and there but a lot of people are a little ott with the comments and things x

At least they are real names, not the trendy made-up ones which are so in vogue.

HandfulOfFlowers · 29/04/2020 17:49

To the current generation of kids, Oasis are an old has-been band that old people like, so I doubt any of their friends will remark on it when they're adults.

catpyjamas · 29/04/2020 17:49

I think this is the problem. Sometimes parents think something is funny at the time, but did you think about your sons having to grow up with Oasis names and having to explain to people throughout their lives? I should imagine 'Mum was a huge oasis fan' would get old after a while. Did you give them middle names? Perhaps one or both could use those when they get older?

It's the fact that they're two brothers who are most famous for hating each other that would give me pause. Like calling them Cain and Abel. I'd worry that a small child might think that was part of what you found so wonderful about the Gallaghers, their ongoing and pretty fucking tedious love/hate relationship.

But, you know, each to their own.

Tartyflette · 29/04/2020 17:54

In about five years time when they're going to school the names won't have the same recognition factor so i wouldn't worry about it at all. They are perfectly nice names.
(Most people won't bat an eyelid, any more than they would have at brothers called John and Paul, or Paul and George about 20 years ago. )

RingaRosie · 29/04/2020 17:54

Liam & Noel both named their sons after personal musical heroes. Lennon & Donovan.

ddl1 · 29/04/2020 17:56

Nothing wrong with Noel and Liam as names. Some people may find the combination funny, but especially with the younger generation, I don't think they'll automatically think of Oasis. And when it comes right down to it, people will make find a way to make fun of any name if they're that way inclined: if it's a common or traditional name, there's usually some stock joke about it; if not, people will make fun of it for being unusual.

PuppyMonkey · 29/04/2020 17:58

Weirdly, I went to school with brothers called Noel and Liam. This was in the 70s so long before the Gallagher brothers.

They were a couple of idiots tbh.Grin

RingaRosie · 29/04/2020 18:01

Catpyjamas is totally right about “Mum was a big Oasis fan”

I know a woman called Jolene, everyone asks about Dolly Parton!

Cheeeeislifenow · 29/04/2020 18:01

It's not the fact that it's after Oasis. But the fact that they publicly fight, I think is the thing.
Plenty of kids in ds's school called Rihanna and Shakira.

maa1992 · 29/04/2020 18:01

I couldn't do this haha, they aren't the worst names though! You'll always get the oasis comments but if you're fine with it then why not

NYCDreaming · 29/04/2020 18:02

Anyway, with two little boys, it's not like you chose Rolf and Harris.

Please do this. And give each one a wooden horse Grin

Badoukas · 29/04/2020 18:05

I'd have gone for Chas n Dave, but then I'm old!

june2007 · 29/04/2020 18:05

I would just assume you liked oasis names are perfectly reasonable tbh.

KatesMott · 29/04/2020 18:07

Sure you did OP Hmm Also Liam’s name is actually William but I’m sure you knew that already being such a super fan...

elQuintoConyo · 29/04/2020 18:08

I wanted to name my twin boys Matt and Luke, but once DH twigged he was having none of it. Spoilsport Angry

millymae · 29/04/2020 18:10

Both names are fine in my opinion and and I’m willing to guarantee that when they get to school their friends won’t give a monkeys why they’re called what they are.
So what if they have to explain to people where their names came from when they’re older. I doubt this will be the case, but if it is, does it really matter. It’s no great hardship to say you’re named after someone your parents liked.

Nancydrawn · 29/04/2020 18:11

Insofar as the Gallaghers are famous to the next generation, it is as brothers who can't stand each other.
