I want to use this name... for a GIRL

a slightly dramatic title haha.
Anyway I’m 33 weeks pg with a baby girl and the name I love for her is MICAH. I know it’s a male name but I just love it and think it works throughout life. Her dad fucked off when I was 12 weeks so it’s just me who gets to decide and hormones could be clouding my vision, so please feel free to (nicely) knock some sense into me.
I did mention the name to a close friend and she surprisingly liked it, and she’s v fussy with names.
So is it really that bad?
TIA

“I know a little Micah, James, and Ezra, all girls.”

I’m sure you do. Do you know a little Mary, Jane and Eliza-all boys?

Exactly. If names went both ways, it wouldn't be sexist. But they don't. Once boy names start being used for girls, eventually they stop being used for boys. And girls names never start being used for boys. It is all one way and that is because there is so much unconscious deeply ingrained bias which tells us that boy things are better than girl things. Which is sexist. It's not about the individual parents who pick these names, it's about the society we all live in which shapes our thinking this way. But every time you use a boy name for a girl you contribute to that culture.

Shirley
Hilary
Leslie

And not forgetting Sue of course ...

bridgetreilly · 17/09/2019 20:33

Shirley
Hilary
Leslie

Which ALL make the exact point: names only go one way from boy to girl and never the opposite.

Sue has not exactly taken off as a boy's name...

What about Lindsey, Lynn, Kelly and Kim. I know men aged 45+ with these names that I have always thought of as traditionally female.

Are they male names that have become female ones?

PoohBearsHole · 17/09/2019 20:40

Tracy
Sasha (Dim. of Alexander)

Both “boys” I know :)

bridgetreilly · 17/09/2019 20:41

Yup, Lindsay, Kelly and Kimberly were all traditionally male names. Don't know about Lynn, but maybe as an abbreviation of Lindsay? Also Tracy and Sasha. Those are boys names which we now mostly use for girls.

Treaclebee · 17/09/2019 20:43

BTW not trying to be a clever arse, it's a genuine question. It's not something I've considered before.

EntirelyAnonymised · 17/09/2019 20:45

I know an (absolutely lovely) adult female Mikah.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 17/09/2019 20:56

I also know an adult female Mikah.

There is a boy named Sasha in DD2's class (his DM is French).
Plenty of boys called Nicola and Andrea in Europe too, they seem to manage okay.

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 20:58

“Tracy
Sasha (Dim. of Alexander)”
Tracy used to be a make name.

Sasha is a standard abbreviation for Alexander in Russian.

PurBal · 17/09/2019 20:59

I know a girl called Noah. Not weird.

cacklingmags · 17/09/2019 21:01

Its a lovely name.

Not in the U.K., though which is what we are talking about.

dobedobedobedoo · 17/09/2019 21:01

There is a female Mikah in my 8yr olds class

Give her a girls name.

GoneToTheDock · 17/09/2019 21:53

I forgot to look earlier, but had a quick google, and theres not much there the the other way that I could find (if anything). Its not something I had ever thought of before.

However, I disagree with this. But every time you use a boy name for a girl you contribute to that culture. everytime you use a name for a child, it becomes their name.

So those who think it sexist, do you have male children? Did you give them 'girl's names? No? Why not?

I think that everyone should be able to call their dc whatever they like

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 22:05

“So those who think it sexist, do you have male children? Did you give them 'girl's names? No? Why not?”

Because they are boys.

Chickenwing · 17/09/2019 22:11

I know a female named Mika. Love her name!

pikapikachu · 17/09/2019 23:04

Mika is a mainstream girls name in Japan like Emma is in the UK.

But every time you use a boy name for a girl you contribute to that culture.

Considering a not insignificant number of people believing in gender over sex, maybeZ all names should be unisex and there should be rules like girls shouldn't be named after flowers because it contributes to the sexist notion that a girl's looks are very important or that they are delicate?

steppemum · 17/09/2019 23:17

There are 2 names being considered here, with 2 origins

Micah - Biblical male name, one of the prophets, and one of the books of the Old Testament is named after him

Mica - the name of a mineral.

By the way both of the above are pronounced My-ka

The Dutch name Mieke is usually pronounced Mee - ka

Malyshek · 18/09/2019 08:24

I think that "boy names" and "girl name" distinctions vary very much depending on geography and time periods.

Cecil and Camille used to be boy names, now exclusively female.

Alexis is a girl's name in the UK/US, it's a boy's name in French.

Karol is a boy's name in Poland.

Personally I like boy names for girls, and I don't care if that's sexist.

I think Micah is lovely.

Cecil is still, quite definitely a boys name.
Not popular, but not a girl's name either.
