I want to use this name... for a GIRL

a slightly dramatic title haha.
Anyway I’m 33 weeks pg with a baby girl and the name I love for her is MICAH. I know it’s a male name but I just love it and think it works throughout life. Her dad fucked off when I was 12 weeks so it’s just me who gets to decide and hormones could be clouding my vision, so please feel free to (nicely) knock some sense into me.
I did mention the name to a close friend and she surprisingly liked it, and she’s v fussy with names.
So is it really that bad?
TIA

I always thought it was a nod to the French half of the family- I must have made that up!
Well, they were just wrong, then. And considering that there’s a lot of misogyny in that family i’m not really surprised!
I can console myself with the fact that at least they pronounced Thalia properly, unlike most of Numsnet!

Have you read any of the non-school ones? They're absolutely fascinating.

Is there a lot of misogyny in them? I love them so much I'm probably blind to it. Ginty I suppose, they're very dismissive of her because of her beauty. And Karen becoming a housewife overnight.

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 10:14

Yes! Falconer’s Lure is one of my favourite books of all time.....

MonkeyLife · 16/09/2019 10:32

Love it Smile

pikapikachu · 16/09/2019 13:03

I didn't know that Micah was a boys name. I thought it was unisex tbh and would be cute on a girl.

I would pronounce Micha as Mee-sha and Mica as Mee-kah. Micah is pronounces My-Kah to me.

Morado · 16/09/2019 15:11

It's the top of my list for my next girl if I have one 😁 so yes from me

Shortfeet · 16/09/2019 15:51

I have a female friend with this name

Okurrrrrrrr · 16/09/2019 19:05

I like it!

@bridgetreilly

Giving boys names to girls is incredibly sexist. And if you don't see that, ask yourself why it never, ever, ever happens the other way round.

Lots of names are used for both boys and girls, ✊ here's a grip, you seem to need one

Some names are or have become unisex. I don't have any objection to there being unisex names and my comment made no mention of those.

But I still say, if we don't give girls' names to boys (which no one ever ever does), it's not okay to give boys' names to girls. It is reflective of deeply ingrained sexism that says it's okay for girls to be more like boys, but never okay for boys to be more like girls.

ChodeMcwinkle · 17/09/2019 18:44

I know a Mieke - her mum was Dutch and it's pronounced Micah. I think you've chosen a lovely name :)

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 18:48

Before I accept the offered grip, you give me an example of a girl’s name that has become regularly used for boys.

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 18:49

I realise that I haven’t even been offered a grip! But the challenge still stands!

SpinsterOfArts · 17/09/2019 18:54

Hilary
Vivian
Evelyn

All used for men, and some v famous ones.

These started out as boys' names, and became girls' names after people began giving them to girls. The same happened to Shirley, Courtney and Beverly. The famous men with those names were born before the crossover happened. I'd be very surprised if anyone named a baby boy Hilary or Vivian today.

As previous posters have pointed out, it only happens one way. Boys aren't given names that were traditionally for girls.

Morado · 17/09/2019 18:56

@bridgetreilly not true... I know a boy named Rose.

GoneToTheDock · 17/09/2019 18:57

@bridgetreilly

&Other names, such as Dana and Leslie which were once mainly boys names are now more common for girls.^
Heres 2 that google found

Yes- names that were boys that have moved to girls. You are arguing against your own point (I didn’t know about Dana, that’s interesting)

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 19:21

No boy Danas in the U.K. in the past 20 years. A handful of girls.

A name for both boys and girls in Persian.

GoneToTheDock · 17/09/2019 19:23

Doh, you're right, that's the wrong way... I'll have another look.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 17/09/2019 19:24

Mieka? Is that the girl spelling? Lovely name x

CoatTails · 17/09/2019 19:24

I teach a Mikah- girl. Pronounced Meeka.

ChristmasArmadillo · 17/09/2019 19:28

I know a little Micah, James, and Ezra, all girls. I really like it, especially paired with a very feminine middle name!

abitoflight · 17/09/2019 19:29

Great name!
I would've used if I had even thought of it tbh

Treaclebee · 17/09/2019 19:31

Oooh Mieka is a pretty spelling.
