I want to use this name... for a GIRL

a slightly dramatic title haha.
Anyway I’m 33 weeks pg with a baby girl and the name I love for her is MICAH. I know it’s a male name but I just love it and think it works throughout life. Her dad fucked off when I was 12 weeks so it’s just me who gets to decide and hormones could be clouding my vision, so please feel free to (nicely) knock some sense into me.
I did mention the name to a close friend and she surprisingly liked it, and she’s v fussy with names.
So is it really that bad?
TIA

I’m very tempted although not fully decided. Anyone have more thoughts / middle name ideas that compliment it?

I know a woman from the Philippines called Micah

SmallAndFarAway · 15/09/2019 22:23

Mika is an actual girl's name in Scandinavia and possibly elsewhere (think Mikka is Finnish). That could work.

Using a boy's name for a girl is really, really tedious for your child, why would you want to subject them to correcting people their whole life?

I have a difficult to spell first name and it's annoying to always have to spell it out - but that's not a patch on having to correct your sex every single time you meet someone. Don't inflict that on someone else unless you're willing to go by George for a decade...

DulciUke · 15/09/2019 22:25

Not fond of unisex names. Only heard Micah used as a boy's name. Might be ok with the variant spellings. Had an older family member with a fairly rare name that sounded vaguely feminine--all his mail was addressed to Miss or Mrs.

Aurorie11 · 15/09/2019 22:27

Micah was originally a male biblical name and a book in the Old Testament. Only Micah I know is male in his late 30s

Marcipex · 15/09/2019 22:35

Nice.

Cleopatrai · 15/09/2019 22:36

It sounds lovely for a girl but honestly she will probably experience people thinking she is a male. especially if she leaves the UK to America for example where it is an established male name.

An alternative spelling or scrap the name :/

fedup21 · 15/09/2019 22:39

I have taught a female Micah (pronounced Mike-a) in recent years.

sydneyslife · 15/09/2019 22:39

I love it!

CheeseToastMarmite · 15/09/2019 22:42

Mieke is Dutch for Maria and pronounced as you say it.

CheeseToastMarmite · 15/09/2019 22:43

Sorry that wasn’t clear - I mean pronounced as Meeka

Happyandglorious · 15/09/2019 22:54

I know 2 Micahs both girls. Pronouced Mee ka
I personally prefer it spelt Mica

mathanxiety · 16/09/2019 05:49

Weirdly, the only American Micah's I know are female. (Two of them).

I would spell it Myka or Mykah just to make sure it was pronounced properly and to maybe put people off thinking she was a boy.

LoreleiRock · 16/09/2019 06:02

Mica Paris is Michelle though, the most ugly 60s/70s name ever, so that would put me off if I was the OP. Micah is lovely though, for a boy or a girl.

MikeUniformMike · 16/09/2019 06:33

Spell it Meike. A German girl's name. Pronounced Mike-uh.
Mica Paris is pron. Meesha.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 16/09/2019 06:38

As a PP said, why is it that male names are good enough for girls but girls' names are not good enough for boys?

TildaTurnip · 16/09/2019 06:44

I’d either go with Mieke or a different name as it is a boys name (despite some people using it for a girl).

OhTheRoses · 16/09/2019 06:51

Hilary
Vivian
Evelyn

All used for men, andcsome v famous ones.

OP I have the feminine version of a male name. It has a hard sound and is unusual. All my life it has required explanation. Why ny mother couldn't just have called ne Susan or Jane I shall never know.

DramaFarmer · 16/09/2019 07:10

It is a Hebrew boy’s name, recently used sometimes fir girls because people associate an ‘ah’ ending with the feminine ‘a’ ending.

But it is from a different linguistic root and no more a feminine ‘ah’ than in Jonah, Noah, Elijah , Isaiah, etc.

If I saw Micah written down I would immediately assume boy. If I heard it I would think ‘oh, Micah, boy ‘, but if I saw Myka written down I would think boy or girl.

Micah is a boys name and I would say no.

CassianAndor · 16/09/2019 07:14

Small really? Mika Hakkinen is most definitely a man (Finnish F1 driver) - maybe he’s an anomaly.

NavyBerry · 16/09/2019 07:22

I like it. Doesn't sound too male to meSmile it's cute

loutypips · 16/09/2019 07:30

I knew a girl called Micah, I didn't know that it was a boys name!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/09/2019 07:32

I think you would have to spell it Myka or Mica as already mentioned as Micah is a well known male biblical name and people really would expect a boy if they saw it spelled that way. I do like it!

Another similar sounding female (also biblical) name is Maacah pronounced Mae.a.cah or Maa.cah (I think the 2nd is more an American pronounciation).

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/09/2019 07:32

It's fine fir a girl.

elderlyhippo · 16/09/2019 07:35

"I’m very tempted although not fully decided. Anyone have more thoughts / middle name ideas that compliment it?"

Micah Benedict
Micah Roman
Micah Alexander
MIcah Nicholas

From which you can tell that I think a boy's name needs boys middle names too, preferably religious or Eastern European to complement it
