I want to use this name... for a GIRL

a slightly dramatic title haha.
Anyway I’m 33 weeks pg with a baby girl and the name I love for her is MICAH. I know it’s a male name but I just love it and think it works throughout life. Her dad fucked off when I was 12 weeks so it’s just me who gets to decide and hormones could be clouding my vision, so please feel free to (nicely) knock some sense into me.
I did mention the name to a close friend and she surprisingly liked it, and she’s v fussy with names.
So is it really that bad?
TIA

The daughter in Waterloo road was called Mika (same pronunciation as Micah). I think you could do it. Maybe look at a few pronunciation options.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 16/09/2019 07:36

Sorry I mean spelling options!

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 07:43

There were 3 girl Micahs last year and nearly 200 boys. That’s not unisex, that’s 3 people who’ve got it wrong.

riotlady · 16/09/2019 07:44

I like it! I thought it was fairly unisex anyway? From the thread title i thought you were going to call her Keith or something

Morgomargot · 16/09/2019 07:47

Sorry but I don't like it. Pronounced Myka it is masculine and a boys name. Meeka is more feminine but I still don't like it.

itsabongthing · 16/09/2019 07:52

Lol at Micah being a “recent” game of thrones name!
Not sure the Old Testament counts as that recent....

Moominfan · 16/09/2019 07:54

I think it's lovely

Chilver · 16/09/2019 07:59

I know a female Mieke and it's nice for girls. (Dutch/ Afrikaans version)

lorraa · 16/09/2019 08:01

Thanks for your thoughts everyone! ❤️

Micah is a male biblical name, Micha is a female name, will be less confusing

Tyrotoxicity · 16/09/2019 08:05

"a shiny silicate mineral with a layered structure, found as minute scales in granite and other rocks, or as crystals. It is used as a thermal or electrical insulator."

Courtesy of google, definition of mica.

It's basically a sort of rock (unless you are a geologist).

Still sounds pretty though, and not many people will make the association with rocks.

DoctorAllcome · 16/09/2019 08:11

I have always thought mikayla is a pretty name

fourquenelles · 16/09/2019 08:29

I called my female greyhound Mica after the mineral not the prophet. I love the name. Go for it OP.

or 3 people who know it's a boys' name but have decided they'd like it for their daughter.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/09/2019 08:42

Mika Häkkinen?

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 08:48

“or 3 people who know it's a boys' name but have decided they'd like it for their daughter.”
AKA “got it wrong” Grin

Treaclebee · 16/09/2019 08:48

I always thought it was a girls name as I've met two female Mica's (mee-ka) and no male ones - until I heard of the pop star, Mika.
Thinks its a pretty name and fine for a girl.

CassianAndor · 16/09/2019 08:50

nope, just made a choice in the full knowledge that it's a boys' name. Getting it wrong implies the parents thought it was a girls' name.

I'm surprised you've never read the Marlow books, Bertrand.

popehilarious · 16/09/2019 08:53

My son has a name that is commonly assumed to be a girl's name. It's not sexist to use names for either sex, what's sexist is assuming it's bad for boys to have "girl's" names.

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 08:55

“It's not sexist to use names for either sex, what's sexist is assuming it's bad for boys to have "girl's" names.”
Which is an almost universal assumption. Reinforced by the excitement about giving girls boy’s names.

KUGA · 16/09/2019 08:59

Sound fine to me !

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 09:01

I have. Nick is short for Nicola. Lawrie is short for Laurence- a French girl’s name. I still think it was a ridiculous thing to call an English girl- but I suppose it was to appease rich Parisian grandmere....

HarrietM87 · 16/09/2019 09:06

@OhTheRoses if your list was meant to be examples of female names used for men, you’ve got it the wrong way round. All of those names were originally male names. Along with Shirley, Lindsay and probably others.

Micah pronounced My-ka is a male name. Mica pronounced Meeka is a female name. If you’re having a girl why not just call her Mica?

bookmum08 · 16/09/2019 09:07

The only Micah I have known is female. She would be in her late 30s/early 40s by now so it can't be a new thing to name a girl.

CassianAndor · 16/09/2019 09:19

Bertrand no, Lawrie's full name is Lawrence (with a W) and she says that she's called that because her parents thought she was going to be a boy and had it saved up. She says it in the first book when she mishears Tim's real name as Failure.

I'll admit to not having read the non-school ones for a very long time but I'm pretty certain it was nothing to do with Grandmother.
