I'm looking for VERY unusual baby names (I think!)

So DS has a name that wasn't even on the ONS. It's completely unique (some may argue that it's a word and not a name!) BUT I've had the most positive reactions to it.

I'm looking for name suggestions for both genders that are along the same level as unusualness. It's important to me that it's easy to pronounce and easy to spell though.

I like the names -
Girls: Coral, Effy, Jovie, Lainie, Quinn
Boys: Atlas, Eden, Jesse, Percy

But none of them are the one!

@whirlwinds - Where did you get that list from? The ONS data for 2018 isn't out yet, but Willow and Theodore (and the diminutive Theo) were top 50 names in 2017. I doubt they've plunged into obscurity just yet! Grin

Bellamy
Horatio
Barold
Caspian

Hermes

News articles and baby forums, can't remember which ones as I have cleared my browsing history nationrail bug but they were copy pasted. Can't validate it at all naturally as it is the internet and I was surprised myself by some of the names as I commented, though there is names there I haven't know, seen or heard much of before on the lists, hence thought it worth while to copy/paste Grin

Jesus wept... Atlas? Lyric? Treacle???

As someone who has an unusual name, it's shit. I think most people in our position feel the same. I used to feel very jealous of the Sarahs and Lauras growing up.

There is a middle ground between the very popular names and the ridiculous. Your child will one day want to be taken seriously as an adult. Also bullying is far more likely with a silly name. You run the risk of your child resenting you.

You don't have to pick something from the Top 200 but for the sake of your child, don't be so try hard that you saddle him/her with a millstone around their neck.

There are lots of nice names (that are actual names) sitting around the 500-1000 positions on the list, why not have a look through there?

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2019 11:16

But Atlas is a real name from Greek Mythology.

QueenofPain · 21/07/2019 11:28

I have a fairly unusual name, I like it. Always been glad not to have a plain name like everyone else. Grew up with lots of people called Sarah, Laura or Rebecca, would never want one of those names for me or my children.

small2018 · 21/07/2019 11:30

I know an Azrael and a Sansa.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 21/07/2019 11:48

Treacle is far better than Molasses imo and perfectly feasible.

Cherrycee · 21/07/2019 12:38

But Atlas is a real name from Greek Mythology.

In most people's minds it is a word to describe a book of maps. It's so rarely used as a name that it would draw attention. Clearly the parents are ok with that, but it would be a hard name for many people to carry.

For a kid who is shy and doesn't like being centre of attention, having a weird name is a nightmare.

Some of the names listed here are even worse than Season, which was roundly ridiculed in a recent thread on here.

Fair enough. I wouldn't want Simper or Tamarind for mine.

GreyGardens88 · 21/07/2019 12:44

Why give a child a stupid name just to be different

PCohle · 21/07/2019 12:53

Joby Grin

Just because you don't live in Scotland doesn't mean your poor child won't interact with any Scottish people in the course of his life. Who will find it amusing that he is called Turd.

thismeansnothing · 21/07/2019 13:09

We nearly named DD Morag. It's not on the ONS list. But we discovered it doesnt include births registered in Scotland and presumed it would be on the one for there
