I'm looking for VERY unusual baby names (I think!)

So DS has a name that wasn't even on the ONS. It's completely unique (some may argue that it's a word and not a name!) BUT I've had the most positive reactions to it.

I'm looking for name suggestions for both genders that are along the same level as unusualness. It's important to me that it's easy to pronounce and easy to spell though.

I like the names -
Girls: Coral, Effy, Jovie, Lainie, Quinn
Boys: Atlas, Eden, Jesse, Percy

But none of them are the one!

I love the name Aubrey. I sleep with a cuddly toy called Aubrey. It's a beautiful name.

OkPedro · 12/07/2019 04:35

Ah come on you just couldn’t call a child Bramble, Moss or gates 😂
I think most “unusual names” are ok but please think of your gorgeous newborn introducing themselves in school, college and work. My surname is awful I could feel my face burning before I even said the name. Our children aren’t experiments..we may not have liked our own names.. it doesn’t mean we need to give our children “out there” or “unusual” names..

devilishlygood · 12/07/2019 06:40

@OkPedro, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with giving a newborn baby the exact same name as a handful of kids you already know?

Having an original or unusual name is not for everyone, but it’s also not going to kill s kid, and if parents are respectful then their children won’t learn that it’s ok to abuse kids for a name.

Tides are turning. Here in the UK, many schools are ethnically very diverse and with that diversity comes a wide span of names that many wouldn’t have heard before. Being unusual doesn’t mean being weird or deliberately odd... just tone down your judgey-ness.

Just because it isn’t your bag, doesn’t mean it’s cruel!! Ffs

bluefriday · 12/07/2019 07:03

@OkPedro actually I know people with all three of those names irl! 😄

BendydickCuminsnatch · 12/07/2019 07:13

Wow I’m surprised by these suggestions, a lot of them aren’t very unusual Confused Saskia, Malin, Coral, Percy... I know all of those and I don’t known that many people.

The only very unusual name I’ve ever come across in real life is Jera. Went to primary school with a girl called Jera and never heard of another anywhere.

devilishlygood · 12/07/2019 07:30

@Bendy....guess it depends where you’re from (not really a ‘Wow’ moment, but sure...!)

I know two Jeras.... plus, it’s the name of a Global Energy Market....!! Wow!

DandyLyon · 12/07/2019 07:37

Phyllis
Jessamy/Jessamyn

Achill (pronounces Ack-ill). (Name of an island on the west coast of Ireland)

thespicegirlsplatformshoes · 12/07/2019 07:42

A lot of these names aren't unusual, and are just names people are now calling their kids thinking they're unusual. They'll stand out more being called Michael or Daniel.

Emmapeeler · 12/07/2019 08:00

There was a Joby at my school. He wasn’t bullied for his name. I wouldn’t use it myself but for me it’s one of the better ones in here!

I agree with the pp though. We gave my DD a traditional name and haven’t met another child called it.

teenmum18 · 12/07/2019 08:27

I know two jobys and neither have been bullied because of their name 🤷🏻‍♀️

QuilliamCakespeare · 12/07/2019 08:33

I know an Effy and a male Quinn so not sure they're VERY unusual.

I love most of these! I really like Quinn - god I wish I was called Quinn, how cool.

I'm team unusual names on this issue. If you're the type of person who thinks having an unusual name is terrible, that will probably rub off on your kids and so it IS better for them to be called Jack and Olivia etc. If you're the type of person who loves the unusual and quirky, that will probably rub off on your kids too. I won't reveal my DC unusual names (because they're so unusual and would be outing!) but they like them.

And if there's a mismatch and your child hates their name, they can change it.

Everyone gets named according to someone else's taste as a baby - that's just a fact of life. Hence I have a prissy name when I'd prefer Quinn etc. (I probably would have changed my name but my career makes it a bad idea)

beanaseireann · 12/07/2019 09:15

Quinn is a fairly common surname in Ireland.

Changingmyname111 · 12/07/2019 09:21

My name is Bronia
Never me another one and I get complimented on it a lot.

It's eastern european in origin but not in fashion now. The male version is bronius, totally want to use that for DC2! I think bronia can be bronislava in the long form but not mine.

Im also really loving Shelia atm.

Mishappening · 12/07/2019 09:22

I would avoid Quinn for a little girl.

daisypond · 12/07/2019 09:25

Quinn is about the very worst name I can think of for a girl.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 12/07/2019 09:28

devilish maybe my Jera is also one of yours! It means ‘harvest’ apparently which really suited her afually.

Missmonkeypenny · 12/07/2019 09:29

Currently pregnant with DC2, top of the list for a boy is Inigo, nn Iggy!

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 12/07/2019 09:33

What about Zosia? I like Electra and Petra too.
