Coby, I have met quite a few

Cbeebiesrehab · 20/05/2019 07:25

Well she also drives a Range Rover and by dressed well I mean in Joules and Hunter wellies😆 and yes Prosecco Mason also has connotations but that was kind of my point. Both names would probably give me a different ‘vibe’ if used on a different child. Yes, this makes me shallow but I think it shows that names can be subjective and opinions can change once the name is owned by a different child.

Sessy19 · 23/05/2019 07:57

It is in fact possible for Kobi to be a professional AND successful, sorry mumsnet twats here!!

My exHs nephew spells his name as above and is now working for the government in Cyber Security and a Defence ‘expert’. He has post-nominals I believe. Awful business, the modern society isn’t it! 😂

OP, lovely name. My least favourite spelling is Coby, it just doesn’t look finished. But Kobi (Swahili, Hebrew) and Kobe (Japanese) are more ‘traditional’ versions I believe, anyway. Koby is the Slavic-recognised spelling and Coby is an Americanisation....in case that helps 😊

TurquoiseAndPurple · 23/05/2019 11:56

I know of Kobe pronounced Coby. I like Kobe the best not that it was one of your options

calpop · 23/05/2019 12:04

there are lots of Kobis at my child's sought after South London independent school. Its an African name I believe. Most if them have West African heritage. Most of them are much more academically successful than my white British son. God you lot make yourself sound so provincial.

Lovely name OP and the boys I know called it are lovely boys. As is the CTO of a company I used to work for, also a Kobi.

peigi · 23/05/2019 12:13

Coby is nice. Hughie, on the other hand, is grim. Go for Coby!

I have a Kodi (shock horror)

SD1978 · 23/05/2019 12:26

Another who us o lot ever seen is spelt Kobi. None of your variations.

Bouncingbelle · 23/05/2019 14:01

@Divgirl2 you have just made my day with Jacobi being a 'jacuzzi jobby'. Im not a fan of the name Coby (which is my preferred spelling) as i cant stop pronpuncing it like c-obby to rhyme with jobby in my head.
Fwiw op, mumsnet hate my sons name too. It was described as chavvy & modern. Its actually biblical!

Proseccofuelled · 23/05/2019 16:31

No one is saying someone named something which strong negative connotations can’t succeed in life - just that it will place additional hurdles for your child to deal with.

calpop · 23/05/2019 16:54

I think ability in spelling and grammar are more of an indicator and more important.

totalnamechanger · 23/05/2019 17:22

Kobi is a Ghanaian name meaning Tuesday (like Kofi -as in Annan- means Friday). I think it is a lovely name but of course you might want to choose a different spelling according to what your influence/ interest in the name is.

I tend to agree with calpop. One person's idea of a 'chavvy' name is often a traditional name from another culture which the person didn't know about. For example the Sikh name Armani. I do accept though, in that case, the brand name is too present in the UK for many people to move on from.

It's a no for Coby.

Yellowpolkadot · 23/05/2019 21:43

Kobe 😊 DD was in NICU with a Kobe, grew on me a lot.

I teach a Corey who is lovely too!

User24689 · 31/05/2019 14:00

I know a Colby pronounced Coby. He is very posh and not in any way a 'thug'!

claremignon1 · 22/10/2024 22:15

I just found this thread because I am pregnant with my first and like the name Coby and am pretty horrified at how vile people are. No wonder MN has a reputation. OP - I think the name is lovely and even though this is an old thread I hope you went with what you liked. Don’t worry about most the posters on here. Most people in the UK have a fetish for the royals so usually opt for those names and are snotty about anything else. Coby is more popular in America but it is Hebrew and Irish. Not that xenophobic snobbery of American names is ok anyway. I hope you weren’t put off a lovely name by some of the mouth breathers xx

Carouselfish · 23/10/2024 10:13

I like CoDy more.
So I suppose Coby with the similar spelling.

Carouselfish · 23/10/2024 10:17

Oh wow, Zombie thread! I do wish we'd find out what OPs on the baby name board actually went with.

StickOfRhubarb · 23/10/2024 19:53

Well, that can't be true can it! Confused

I always thought Coby was mainly only ever spelt Coby. But the amount of different spellings, I had for it shocked me.

I love the name Coby but only as it was my dogs name so I personally associate it with a pets name. I cringe inside when I hear children being called Coby, but then I also cringe at popular names too such as Olivia, Ava, Isla, Oscar, Felix etc. personal choice
