In my neck of the woods it is always Kobi..ive taught 3 in my time

Rainandwine · 14/05/2019 21:43

I just asked a teacher I’m out with what they’d think if they saw Coby on the register, they said “well I’d always hope for the best in a child whatever the name, but honestly I would be nervous about who was going to turn up to parents evening”

PineapplesandtheGovernment · 14/05/2019 21:45

I've heard jokes where Hughey is used as the noise people make when they are sick

ALargeSliceOfCheesecake · 14/05/2019 21:46

Sorry none of them

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 14/05/2019 21:48

My friend has a Kobey. I'm not keen, it looks a bit Kardashian. I always thought it was spelt Cobi like the footballer Cobi Jones.

queeneye · 14/05/2019 21:49

(Whispering) another vote for Hugh(ie) I'm afraid.

queeneye · 14/05/2019 21:49

But Coby is the best spelling of a terrible name

Proseccofuelled · 14/05/2019 21:52

Over a hundred comments....
OP are you ok? Are you due soon?

PinaColadaPlease · 14/05/2019 21:53

Of your options I'd choose Coby

Proseccofuelled · 14/05/2019 21:59

You see it all on Mumsnet both in the posts & the replies so I think take or leave what’s helpful to you or not. I think my favourite to date was someone wanting feedback on the name ‘Tree’ Grin

HappyMama01 · 14/05/2019 21:59

What about Corbin? (Just to throw another name in the mix?)

KKKK1 · 14/05/2019 22:00

@Proseccofuelled yes I am fine thank you, did ask MN to delete the thread but as usual they won't because people making you feel like shit over a name isn't good enough reason! 🥳

I am coming late to the party, but I think it's fine as a name. Spelt Coby or Kobi. Similar to Toby I guess, but with a C.

No idea why it's really hated, I wouldn't think much if I had a student named 'Coby'. My students are international though and have way more interesting names than Coby.

I can't quite get why Hugh would be better! Although Hughie is cute.

Proseccofuelled · 14/05/2019 22:07

Oh I’m sorry you feel that way. I wanted a name for my child that a lot of people hated & it really ruined what was in hindsight a perfectly nice name. We are TTC & that’s partly why I’m here....I would prefer to read people’s comments & views online than find out a close relative or friend thinks a name is horrific (& someone will hate whatever you choose). Once a baby is born people tend to pretend to love it anyway.

What are the middle names you have selected?

Greywind1523 · 14/05/2019 22:07

I prefer Kobe as in Kobe Bryant but Coby is the best of the three you’ve listed.

ArtisanPopcorn · 14/05/2019 22:07

If a name got this much hate on Mumsnet I wouldn't use it. You have to remember it's your child, not you, who will be saddled with it for life.

itssquidstella · 14/05/2019 22:07

Coby.

TaxiGood · 14/05/2019 22:08

I’m American and I agree with the majority. They’re all bad and yes, sorry, they do carry certain connotations. Fair or not, people will have preconceived notions about your child based on his name — even if they don’t realize they are even doing it. It’s human nature to make judgments based on existing associations. I guess it all depends how you’d like your child to be perceived by most people.

Kobe Bryant is one of the most famous pro basketball players ever and I think he’s known as a good guy (as superhuman zillionaires go) so if you must do it I would use that spelling.

HastaLaVistaPrint · 14/05/2019 22:09

I’ve only seen it spelled Kobe, what do you think of that as an option, OP? Isn’t there a famous American sportsman called Kobe something?

HastaLaVistaPrint · 14/05/2019 22:10

Ha! X-post with Taxi. Grin

Proseccofuelled · 14/05/2019 22:15

Just to add.... there is also Kobe which is a Japanese place & used as a name - but it’s pronounced ‘Coh-bay’ so might add to the confusion.

So I think I’d go with Coby.

Dhalandchips · 14/05/2019 22:16

Weirdly it reminds of a Dutch fabric company. Kobe fabrics!

candlefloozy · 14/05/2019 22:16

I knew someone who called their child this and several months later changed it to his middle name because no one could remember it or pronounce it right. Is it an American name??

llangennith · 14/05/2019 22:17

Cody

KKKK1 · 14/05/2019 22:19

Just going to call him bob🤦🏻‍♀️
