@Greyworm does it get shortened to Jake?

Hughie is cute, with Hugh on certificate for an adult name.

Kaden/Caden and Karl/Carl - alternatives to add into mix?

BornInAThunderstorm · 14/05/2019 21:04

Crikey there’s a lot of vitriol toward a kids name here!
I know a Cobie and he’s lovely, can’t really understand the problem. There are two blatant thugs in the making at ds’s school and both are called Oliver so as long as you avoid that name you’ll be fine Op Wink

Greyworm · 14/05/2019 21:05

Can you put Coby as a middle name and then you can use it informally? If you've been put off? Archie Louis George Coby. Coby for short Grin

KooMoo · 14/05/2019 21:06

Sorry OP, I don’t like the name at all no matter how it’s spelt. Clearly completing up to you what you name you dc.

Greyworm · 14/05/2019 21:07

@chocmallows I like Caden :) there's another name around here. Caleb. Quite cute!

KKKK1 · 14/05/2019 21:08

@Greyworm we already have his middle names (shock horror there is 2) I don't know I never cared about peoples opinion with DD and still don't I love her name but with this little boy I feel like I have to get it right 🤔 all my family like/love Coby but MN is a bitch 😂

Wow there’s a lot of vitriol on this thread! I’m surprised it’s proboking such feelings - I didn’t realise it was such a polarising name.

We know a Cobe (8yrs) and he’s a lovely boy from a very naice family) - I can’t think of anyone further from the stereotype that’s been alluded to on here. He was born in America though so maybe people aren’t as obsessed with the class allusions of names over there, I don’t know.

Rainandwine · 14/05/2019 21:09

I do think it’s a pretty rough sounding name although I am just a random nobody on the Internet & I’m sure there are people who hate the names I love.

I do think it’s a shame that people will judge children by things like their name / background etc but even though I hate the unfairness of it, I still wouldn’t want to make it harder for my child to get on in life & sadly I do know a lot of people who’d have put a CV with a name like that on it straight in the bin.

Could it make a good nickname for something like Jacob?

Otherwise I think I’d choose Coby

Whatever you decide I hope by the time our kids are older the fact there are so many weird and wonderful names now will stop the strong class association of names in this country.

Refilona · 14/05/2019 21:10

Jacob nn Coby.

Rainandwine · 14/05/2019 21:11

Laquila names still have associations in America but the fashions & trends are different to here. Coby / Cody / Brody type names I think are more popular than here.

Greyworm · 14/05/2019 21:12

Sorry I missed your question. Yes it gets shortened to Jake and Jakey.

EdtheBear · 14/05/2019 21:13

Coby

Kobey looks like a spelling mistake, do any words in the English language start ko?

Cobey is marginally better but I'd be tempted to read it as C-obey

TemporaryPermanent · 14/05/2019 21:14

I think Coby would be pronounced right and is an attractive sound. if I saw Kobe, I'd say it Kohb like Tobe.

The baby name board is much less visceral than it used to be which is a shame for the entertainment value. I used to love it when you'd get people saying can I call my dd Brigitte, so French and classy, and bonsoir would rock up to say URGH in France that's a maid's name etc.

Greyworm · 14/05/2019 21:15

I remember seeing that woman... The one Holly Willoughby hates.. On This Morning saying how certain names were awful. Names of places and how she wouldn't let her children play with children with names like these and the funny thing was her daughters name is India. (sorry my minds gone blank, I can't remember her name! She's pretty awful) It is sad that children are judged by their names (and looks sometimes)

Rainandwine · 14/05/2019 21:17

Hugh is a fabulous name

I’m sorry OP when I posted my comment I hadn’t realised there were 4 pages of comments & I’ve added nothing useful. I hope you’re not too upset by this thread.

TrixieFranklin · 14/05/2019 21:19

None it's horrid, but then so is your attitude. Hughie is so much better.

MamaofAHH · 14/05/2019 21:19

I think it's the lad baby mum, who won celebrity mum of the year, that has a son called Kobe.
There is another one I know of and his is spelt Coby. I prefer the Coby spelling.
But then my son's nickname is Hughie 😉

PQ77 · 14/05/2019 21:19

I read many many CVs shortlisting for interview. Caleb or Hugh (nn Hughie), other names you mentioned - I would take their CVs more seriously and without preconceived stereotypes than I would Coby/Kobe/Cobe etc. Sorry, just my opinion.

Lots of people (incl on Mumsnet) HATE my sons name but I gave him the boring full version on his birth certificate so he has that option - for his CV!

KKKK1 · 14/05/2019 21:22

@PQ77 what is your son's name?

OP posts:
MyNewBearTotoro · 14/05/2019 21:25

I love the sound of the name but unfortunately I don’t like any of the ways it can be spelt- nothing seems to look quite right. It was a name on the shortlist for my DS (Now Reuben) but was put off because I couldn’t find a way I liked it written down. I think the ‘standard’ spelling is Kobe but there are a lot of variations.

Rainandwine · 14/05/2019 21:27

Corban is a biblical name (I think?)

bluebluezoo · 14/05/2019 21:35

I like Hobie. Baywatch is rerunning on Prime, btw Grin

But then the only Koby i know is an utter bastard Sad.

PineapplesandtheGovernment · 14/05/2019 21:37

Coby
