What do you think of Fyfe?

My husband and I thought we had settled on Kit, but we are starting to have doubts.

We would like something unusual, our dd is named after my granny, and she will probably be the only one in her school year.

My husband is Dan and he likes his name but dislikes that there are 5 other dans in his friendship group, so they all go by their surnames.

My name is also uncommon, I don’t think I have ever met another one of me, although I’m hearing the name more now than previously.

Other boys names we liked were;
Kipp
Rafe
Ari
Keir

But the more I think about it the more I’m drawn to Fyfe. My husbands family is also Scottish so I quite like that link, especially as DD is named after someone from my side of the family.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Spike

WillowintheUK · 29/04/2019 14:25

Only Fyfe I know is Fyfe Robertson, and he was ancient in the 60s. So it's a No from me.

I do like Keir of your other names.

I know someone with this as a surname... I'd never think of it as a first name and I don't like it, sorry.

What about Campbell for a Scottish name?

englishdictionary · 29/04/2019 18:18

Campbell is a surname that means crooked mouth.

Mummabear12345567889 · 29/04/2019 18:20

It's also a first name.

englishdictionary · 29/04/2019 18:20

Oh. Ok.

Tunnockswafer · 29/04/2019 18:30

You seriously can not compare Fife to being called Paris, London or Devon Smile

Tunnockswafer · 29/04/2019 18:34

Culross? Not pronounced how it looks though!

NorthernRunner · 29/04/2019 18:34

Doesn’t matter now, we have decided to go in a completely different direction, and have chosen

AnnieDianaLulu · 29/04/2019 18:50

Yes, Nate is the nicest of them all Smile

Thetreeonthehill · 29/04/2019 20:44

Ooh I love that. Love Nathan and Nate.

NorthernRunner · 29/04/2019 21:44

I have always loved Nate and it’s been on my list on my phone since we found out I was pregnant but I just thought there is no way DH will like it, it’s far too modern for him. Then yesterday out of the blue he just said, do you know what name I’ve always loved...Grin so Nate it will be!

I never made the banana connection. I love Fyfe, reminds me of Fyfe Dangerfield. It would have made our list but our surname is a Scottish place name so it's a strong no on that basis.

DS2 knows a girl whose name is spelled Fife. My first reaction was Shock Confused. It is actually pronounced Feefay. She is of Nigerian heritage I think. The Feefay pronunciation really suits her and sounds beautiful; the Fife pronunciation not so much!

starbrightnight · 30/04/2019 17:58

I haven't read the whole thread but has anyone said that a fife is a musical instrument?

'Solder, solder won't you marry me, with your musket, fife and drum'.

It's a wind instrument, similar to a piccolo, the word originates from the German word for pipe, Pfeife which means pipe. Someone who plays the fife is called a fifer.

But hearing the word makes me think of the county of Fife in Scotland.

PCohle · 30/04/2019 17:59

Yes people have said that.

And OP is now using a completely different name for her child.

NorthernRunner · 30/04/2019 19:36

Yes I heard it’s an instrument 😊

After all that we have decided on Nate.
Thank you Smile

Fyvie is a famous village in Aberdeenshire if it helps. I'm from Fife - never heard it used as a name. I know someone who's nickname is Fifie, because he's from there but lives in England. To be honest, Fifers have a reputation for being very tight with money and a bit rough & mean (it's an agricultural/old mining area) so I wouldn't name my child that. Maybe if your husband's family had Fife connections, but you didn't say where they're from. Eg if it was St Andrews you might use Andrew?!

Calixtine · 30/04/2019 21:48

Love Nate too! Great taste OP :)
