What do you think of Fyfe?

My husband and I thought we had settled on Kit, but we are starting to have doubts.

We would like something unusual, our dd is named after my granny, and she will probably be the only one in her school year.

My husband is Dan and he likes his name but dislikes that there are 5 other dans in his friendship group, so they all go by their surnames.

My name is also uncommon, I don’t think I have ever met another one of me, although I’m hearing the name more now than previously.

Other boys names we liked were;
Kipp
Rafe
Ari
Keir

But the more I think about it the more I’m drawn to Fyfe. My husbands family is also Scottish so I quite like that link, especially as DD is named after someone from my side of the family.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

No me neither, our Kit is just Kit

Hereshopingforimprovement · 26/04/2019 09:07

I immediately think of Fyfe Dangerfield of the Guillemots. Love it.

PinkOboe · 26/04/2019 09:08

🍌

llangennith · 26/04/2019 09:10

Still no clearer letthemysterybe

Really OP?🙄

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 09:12

My love for Fyfe is growing I must admit.

If you think my name choices are out there, wait until you hear my husbands shortlist.

He was pushing Appie. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s a Dutch name apparently. (We aren’t Dutch)

Yes really llangennith

I had to copy and paste into google!

I like Rafe but please be brave enough to spell it the classic proper way of Ralph
(And just spend a lifetime correcting those who don't know, ie.98% of the population)

notatwork · 26/04/2019 09:19

Well taking our the Y completely removes the banana reference as long as one sees it written down.
Alas the kingdom in Scotland and the musical instrument remain.
Have you considered Piccolo?

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 09:25

😆 no I haven’t considered Piccolo

Google Fyfe Robertson and then decide.

AudacityOfHope · 26/04/2019 10:14

Fife James is lovely!

MalevolentPrawn · 26/04/2019 10:19

I think if you call your baby Fyfe it will be nicknamed "banana" for life. I wouldn't, sorry.

Doidontimmm · 26/04/2019 10:23

I live near Fife, the local radio station does a funny song about Fife (google That’s Fife, forth one, grant stott). That’s all I can think about.... I’d be looking at him and saying That’s Fife!! Quite like it though as long as he never lives here!!!

Lichtie · 26/04/2019 10:25

Can't say I've ever heard of anyone called fyfe/Fife, but who cares about it being a County, Angus (the county) is just up the road from Fife and there and plenty of those around.

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 10:35

We live in London, husband has Scottish and Irish family, but he was born in Manchester and most of his family live around there now too, so unlikely we will move to Fife!

It’s number one on my list now I think. Closely followed by Kit

Oh god if there's any Scottish connection at all please don't call him Fife/Fyfe!

Twelve8Ts · 26/04/2019 11:42

Fyfe is cute. Keir and Kit are lovely

lookingelsewhere · 26/04/2019 11:43

I immediately thought of bananas.

It can also be an instrument:

(Wikipedia)

A fife /ˈfaɪf/ is a small, high-pitched, transverse aerophone, that is similar to the piccolo. The fife originated in medieval Europe and is often used in Fife & Drum Corps, military units and marching bands. Someone who plays the fife is called a fifer. The word fife comes from the German Pfeife, or pipe, which comes from the Latin word pipare.

lookingelsewhere · 26/04/2019 11:44

I always remember this song from my childhood:

O soldier, soldier, won't you marry me
With your musket fife and drum?

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 11:54

lookingelsewhere

A couple of other posters brought up that rhyme but I had never heard of it before!

I quite like the instrument link. I’m in no way musical, but DH is

Doidontimmm · 26/04/2019 12:18

@lookingelsewhere - I’ve been saying that wrong forever! Thought it was musket, pipe & drum!

wizzywig · 26/04/2019 12:19

Bananas!

TatianaLarina · 26/04/2019 13:42

Fife/Fyfe is cringe.

There are so many great Scottish boys names -
Hector, Hamish, Fingal, Angus, Fergus, Dougal/ray, Lachlan, Sholto

Cannyhandleit · 26/04/2019 13:50

I really like the name fyfe but I live in Fife so I probably wouldn't get away with it haha! I also like keir!

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 14:18

Thanks for your suggestions tatiana they aren’t to my taste but I agree there are loads of great Scottish names.
