What do you think of Fyfe?

My husband and I thought we had settled on Kit, but we are starting to have doubts.

We would like something unusual, our dd is named after my granny, and she will probably be the only one in her school year.

My husband is Dan and he likes his name but dislikes that there are 5 other dans in his friendship group, so they all go by their surnames.

My name is also uncommon, I don’t think I have ever met another one of me, although I’m hearing the name more now than previously.

Other boys names we liked were;
Kipp
Rafe
Ari
Keir

But the more I think about it the more I’m drawn to Fyfe. My husbands family is also Scottish so I quite like that link, especially as DD is named after someone from my side of the family.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Fife Robertson (Robinson?) is who I think of - or Fife of Firth - not keen on Fyfe spelling.

HeronLanyon · 26/04/2019 01:00

Firth of forth that should read and Fife

Cfs83 · 26/04/2019 01:11

First thought here was also bananas.

As a Scot, Fife doesn't sound like a person's name to me, just the Kingdom of... but I've heard a lot worse on here. Might be ok so long as he never lives in Scotland or has scottish friends. Keir is much nicer and recognisable whilst not that common. Kit also great if it's for Christopher but feels insubstantial as a given name IMO. (But still better than Fife !)

PCohle · 26/04/2019 01:18

What about Clackmannanshire? Or Midlothian? So many lovely options.

Quintella · 26/04/2019 01:24

Fife's brother should be called Ken.

LittleKitty1985 · 26/04/2019 02:04

My first thought was that it was pronounced the same as FIFA and perhaps you had a football loving OH...

dreichuplands · 26/04/2019 02:45

It isn't as has been pointed out a name that a Scot would be likely to give their dc.
Kit seems fine and I really like Kier.

Calixtine · 26/04/2019 02:59

I like Fife/Fyfe! Agree that Kit is getting popular, but I do like Rafe.

How about Kester/Kes?

Cfs83 · 26/04/2019 03:10

* "Fife's brother should be called Ken.* "

My favourite comment of the day thanks @Quintella 😂

GothicMansionOnARainyNight · 26/04/2019 03:24

I thought of the nursery rhyme ‘solider, solider won’t you marry me’ and wondered if he’d have a musket and drum.

InceyWinceyette · 26/04/2019 03:39

Yes, I think musical instrument.

Kit is great.

ImTheCaddy · 26/04/2019 04:44

Banana!

Someoneonlyyouknow · 26/04/2019 04:53

I think the name should be spelt Fyfe (as in Fyfe Robertson, a Scottish TV journalist in the olden days) and I quite like it. And I'm Scottish. Keir is also nice and Scottish. Of your other choices I like Kit.

OhTheRoses · 26/04/2019 05:01

Kit - Christopher
Rafe - Ralph
Keir - (know one)
Kip (short for Kipper and will need sibs called Bif and Chip)
Fyffe (don't be silly)

Shantotto · 26/04/2019 05:42

I know a Fyfe and he’s lovely so that makes me biased towards liking it!

sashh · 26/04/2019 05:50

I was coming on to say bananas and suggest Jaffa for a sibling.

I think Kit is going to be popular because of Kit Harrington.

My brother is a Simon, he was named after the character in the Saint, there are loads of them my brother's age.

JuniorAsparagus · 26/04/2019 06:01

I thought of Dude Robertson - old bearded Scottish guy used to be on television when I was a child. I suppose there are more people who don't remember him than those who do, but it colours the name for me.

JuniorAsparagus · 26/04/2019 06:02

Fyfe Robertson Blush

sawyersfishbiscuits · 26/04/2019 06:36

I actually really like it. It has a nice sound to it

Not a fan of Kipp. I actually know a delightful little boy called Kipp and I still think it's a bit too of an odd name.

IggyAce · 26/04/2019 06:55

Nothing wrong with Fyfe, I didn’t think of bananas I thought of the singer Fyfe Dangerfield.

OhTheRoses · 26/04/2019 06:56

sash that cheered me up. Fife and Jaffa Grin

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 26/04/2019 07:10

Kit- i hate kit nane of a manilpative relative who i'm now no contact with
Kipp- kipper or very upper class
Rafe- ralph finnes
Ari- waan't that a character in ENTOURAGE
Keir- i know its stand a lone name but short for Keiran
Fife- it won't be popular on here. I'm not sure it is a first nane but personally tyink it sounds like it.

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 07:15

Thank you all for your replies!!

Fyfe Dangerfield was also partly the inspiration (first gig my husband took me to when we were about 17 was the guillemots!!)

And our surname begins with F so I quite like the alliteration.

But I missed the banana connection. So thank you for pointing that out.
Food for thought...GrinGrin

The only one that doesn't sound like you are naming a pet is Keir.

whitehalleve · 26/04/2019 07:23

It's an old family name in my family. But definitely spelt Fife.
