What do you think of Fyfe?

My husband and I thought we had settled on Kit, but we are starting to have doubts.

We would like something unusual, our dd is named after my granny, and she will probably be the only one in her school year.

My husband is Dan and he likes his name but dislikes that there are 5 other dans in his friendship group, so they all go by their surnames.

My name is also uncommon, I don’t think I have ever met another one of me, although I’m hearing the name more now than previously.

Other boys names we liked were;
Kipp
Rafe
Ari
Keir

But the more I think about it the more I’m drawn to Fyfe. My husbands family is also Scottish so I quite like that link, especially as DD is named after someone from my side of the family.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

I live in Fife, although I'm not a native.

I think Fyfe is a perfectly nice name for a child, although Keir was my first choice name for my DS. My DH didn't like Keir so we had to think again and went through all the mountains and islands to give us inspiration - we ultimately decided to name our son after all the tallest Scottish mountains and just called him Ben with Fraser as his middle name.

I also like Colm and Owen.

Tavannach · 26/04/2019 22:57

Fyfe is great if it works well with the surname, like Fyfe Robertson but not Fyfe Smith.
Keir's my favourite of the rest.

NorthernRunner · 26/04/2019 23:12

Our surname begins with F, it’s quite an unusual surname, I think it has Irish roots, but I like the alliteration of Fyfe F.....

Fife or Fyfe is a County in Scotland

Fife is a county in Scotland. Fyfe is a name, probably a surname originally that has been used as a first name. Like Cameron, Brodie, Campbell, Finlay, Stuart etc etc.

Gingerkittykat · 26/04/2019 23:28

His family live in Glenrothes, the grimmest place in Fife, and wants to name his child Fyfe? At least it will give his family a good chuckle.

Quintella · 26/04/2019 23:30

One of the guys who used to own Fyffes ( bananas) goes for a walk in my area. You'd never think he was a multi millionaire. Very low key.

Doesn't dress up in a foam banana outfit?

MarthasGinYard · 26/04/2019 23:31

Ginger Grin

StandardLampski · 26/04/2019 23:33

I'd a friend Mr Fyffe, who'd book places and say "Fyffe as in bananas!"

....Musket, fife and drum....what is a Fife?

Op really not sure I'd use Fife in any spelling as a name. Fyffe = bananas, Fife = kingdom of

Beeziekn33ze · 26/04/2019 23:53

I like Keir
Met Fyfe Robertson, lovely man, a great and humane journalist
Kit
Kim? Originally a boy’s name
Keri (Welsh)

Mentions of county names haven’t, I think, included Somerset

NorthernRunner · 27/04/2019 00:23

East Anglia has a strong sound to it!!

Our surname ends in -and so Zetland would rhyme haha
What a name that would be GrinGrin

Macaroonmayhem · 27/04/2019 09:19

Our surname is also a place in Scotland so we had to rule out any ‘location’ names as first names otherwise the DCs would have sounded like satnav instructions. 😂

Thetreeonthehill · 27/04/2019 10:33

First thought bananas
Second thought county in Scotland
Third thought one of these.

What do you think of Fyfe?
Thetreeonthehill · 27/04/2019 10:34

Forgot to say I really like Kipp and Keir.

EdtheBear · 27/04/2019 12:57

Thanks TreeontheHill - I never knew what a Fife was.

I like Keir and Kerr but not Kipp, sounds too much like skipHmm.

NorthernRunner · 27/04/2019 13:51

Yes kipp was ruled out for that reason, I said Kipp to my daughter and she said what skip? 😆

Keir has gone down better than I thought!!

Kip in Ireland = dump.

'This town is a total kip'.

Whizzler · 27/04/2019 13:57

Keir is pretty mainstream so doesn't seem out there like Kip or Fyfe.
