Friend named her girl Scarlett-June

My best friend just named her daughter Scarlett-June. I usually think hyphenated names are tacky (think Lily-May) and I've never ever liked them.
But unlike the other hyphenated tacky names out there, I think Scarlett-June is just gorgeous! It's so picturesque and beautiful. Scarlett is really spunky but then you had the -June on the end and you get a great name (I think).
So, my question (and my friend's) is are ALL hyphenated names tacky? Do you like the name Scarlett-June?
btw my friend asked me to make this thread, she's given the thumbs up, don't worry!
I'm interested to hear your thoughts! x

I’m pregnant with twins which I will name Casper

Twins? Ooh, you nearly had me. Too far, OP, too far 😉

Biscuitsneeded · 20/04/2019 22:02

Well it's not my taste at all, but your friend probably wouldn't especially like the names I gave my children. It doesn't really matter what people on the internet think - if your friend likes it then Scarlett-June (or SJ) is just fine, as long as she won't take offence if teachers don't bother with all of it and can't bring themselves to use the initials (which should probably be strictly for family!).

mabelsgarden · 20/04/2019 22:25

You intend to call your son Casper? Really?!

As @Merril said, too far OP! Wink

I think hyphenated names are tacky. I suppose that Scarlett-June is preferable to Scarlett-fever?

Rosesaredead · 21/04/2019 04:11

I think that all hyphenated names are tacky. Sorry OP! Scarlett June I'd like, but Scarlett-June not so much. It just automatically becomes one of the million other unecessarily hyphened names. A hyphen just makes nice names a bit chavvy.

Cbeebiesrehab · 21/04/2019 10:22

Why is it unbelievable that the OP is having twins? People do have twins you know🤨

Personally not a fan of hyphenated names but each to their own. She will probably end up just going by Scarlett by school age.

MikeUniformMike · 21/04/2019 14:29

When you say it the tt and J run into each other so it sounds like Scarlachune. The hyphen ruins two nice names.

Kokeshi123 · 21/04/2019 15:10

Scarlett-June makes me wonder if the other options were Magenta February, Beige April and Light Grey August.

MollysMummy2010 · 21/04/2019 15:13

I am a traditional double barrel - never get called the second but except by mother, and she is now dead. My daughter only recently realised its my first name and not my middle name.

TatianaLarina · 21/04/2019 16:34

Ghastly. But DD can just drop the June.

MikeUniformMike · 21/04/2019 18:51

Kokeshi123, I like your suggestion but you forgot the hyphens. I could suggest Red-October as a sibling name.

Divgirl2 · 21/04/2019 21:07

I like Scarlett, I love June. I think Scarlett-June is absolutely awful. It sounds like a daily mail front page to me WILD FIRES SWEEP BRITAIN AS SCARLET JUNE REACHES NEW HIGHS. She will definitely either be just Scarlett or Scar-Jew by the time she's 14.
And SJ?! Be prepared to get "oh, sarah-jane?" until the end of time.

TildaTurnip · 21/04/2019 21:14

Love Casper and Thomas.

I would hate to be known by initials. I think Scarlet and June are fine names. Not sure what the hyphen adds so wouldn’t bother.

Prettylittlelady · 21/04/2019 21:22

Really don’t like it - sorry!
Both names are fine on their own as a first and a middle but put together is quite awful.
If your ‘friend’ wants the little one to be called SJ she may as well call her Sarah-Jayne at least it flows far nicer.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 21/04/2019 21:25

It's tacky. Either use the name as a middle name or not at all.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 21/04/2019 21:27

Makes me think of Red October

Shelbybear · 21/04/2019 22:10

I don't particularly like hyphenated names and the trend of it being something-May.

I don't like Scarlett though even on its own and I don't like it with June even more, sorry! It's too long. If she is going to be known as SJ can't you just do first name and middle name.

candlefloozy · 21/04/2019 22:16

I have a hyphenated name and am in my thirties. I've never been called by my full name as an adult or a teen. Maybe in early childhood. Hyphens seen pointless to me unless you insist on children being called both names.

hmwhatsmynameagain · 21/04/2019 22:25

As a reception child I rejected the hyphend part of my name- it meant I didn't get my choice at golden time as we had to write our names on the blackboard under what we chose to do, I still had to get my name label from my drawer to copy so all the spaces in the Wendy house were gone as my class mates with shorter names did not have to copy their names, and I could spell the first part of my name without the the prompt.

Long Story Short - I dropped my hyphen name as it made my life more difficult at 5

Apricot80s · 22/04/2019 20:38

I don't like Scarlett because of Scar.

How about Charlotte-June and CJ

FenellaMaxwell · 22/04/2019 20:42

It sounds like a brand of period pants - it’s awful.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 22/04/2019 23:56

I like Scarlett, June is horribly old fashioned, and I really really hate hyphenated names as first names.

I just dont think scarlett and June are even in the same category style wise?

Someoneonlyyouknow · 23/04/2019 00:24

Like the OP ". I usually think hyphenated names are tacky (think Lily-May) and I've never ever liked them." I don't think people with any self-awareness can post in AIBU and not be prepared for a flaming.
What is worse

  1. A hyphenated name
  2. Describing a name as "picturesque"
  3. A name that is only initials
  4. Shortening a hyphenated name to initials
hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 23/04/2019 01:16

I don’t mind if it’s two names that can be said easily together eg Sarah-Jane or Anne-Marie. I think it’s pointless when it’s two completely different names and no one will use them together

LikeDolphinsCanSwim · 23/04/2019 01:32

I know someone who referred to their baby as Dave Junior throughout their pregnancy, because the baby's DF's name was Dave. That got shortened to DJ. When baby was born they manufactured a name, eg Daniel-John, that allowed them to continue to call him DJ.

Is it a situation like that? It didn't think it really worked in Daniel-John's case, but it was less clunky than Scarlett-June.

(Have changed the actual names involved.)
