Delilah?

I love the way this name sounds, and nickname of lilah.

What’s your thoughts?

I’m not religious at all so don’t really care about biblical connotations.

I love Delilah but my husband is keen on Cara.

Why?

TheLastUNIC0RN · 16/03/2019 08:11

I LOVE Delilah.
Was my girls name, but we had a little boy.
Still on my list if we have another child and it's a girl

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 08:11

I keep changing my mind on it but deep down I think I like it a lot just I would be afraid to use it.

NannyR · 16/03/2019 08:13

The song springs to mind, but I actually quite like the name.

Othelloo · 16/03/2019 08:13

Why would you be afraid?

Why why why?

Who cares about the song though?

But do you care about the Tom Jones connotations? I think it would be a most burdensome and annoying name to have. Are you in the UK, op?

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/03/2019 08:14

I like it! It’s my colleagues name but she calls herself Della as a nickname.

Othelloo · 16/03/2019 08:17

Yes I am in the UK.

But it’s quite an old song now.

I think more likely to think of the plain white T’s song hey there Delilah.

But I don’t think it’s bad to have a song attached to your name.

It is an old song, but it's an extremely well known song. It's embedded in the cultural psyche. Young Delilah will get serenaded a lot. Especially in pubs when she is not so young Delilah. It's also a song about a murder victim. Never heard of the White Ts by the way. It's a beautiful name, but the song is the reason that it is rarely used.

daisypond · 16/03/2019 08:29

Cara is lovely. The bible story really puts me off Delilah. You might not care about the connotations but the story is major in art and literature etc so it might make you look ignorant.

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 08:31

Why why why?Grin
It's a very bold name. I do think it's pretty. I do like it.
Dare I say that where I live I'd likely be labelled an oddball calling my daughter DelilahSad

zhivagodr · 16/03/2019 08:31

I think of the plain white ts song too, or Florence and the machine! Not tom Jones. I like the way it sounds too

Othelloo · 16/03/2019 08:35

Yes I love love how it sounds.

Oh dear, I don’t want to seem ignorant for picking it though.

Do you think the name is a no-go then? Is Cara better...

I just find the sound of Delilah so beautiful compared to Cara.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 16/03/2019 08:39

Cara’s better. The name Delilah could be a bit of a burden, pretty though it is.

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 08:40

It's lovely. My first thought was the song but is that a problem ?

OutwithMyRemit · 16/03/2019 08:42

I like it! Males me think of a song, and not THE song, but one by Queen that is about one of Freddie Mercury's cats Grin. Think it's on the Innuendo album.

IM0GEN · 16/03/2019 08:43

Cara is better.

MsTSwift · 16/03/2019 08:45

Cara. Delilah has too much baggage to lumber your poor child with. It’s possible she will hate you for it (have a 13 year old most of them want to fit in with crowd and having a name like that would not be appreciated)

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/03/2019 08:45

Why not just call her Lilah? It’s a name in its own right.

Othelloo · 16/03/2019 08:46

I’ve just discovered that Cher Lloyd has a daughter called Delilah-Rae... think I’m put off now 😳

OP posts:
Othelloo · 16/03/2019 08:46

Perhaps Lila is better...

OP posts:
daisypond · 16/03/2019 08:46

It does have a pretty sound. You could always claim you are reappropriating the name after centuries of patriarchal mysogeny. Or Lydia has the same sort of sounds but in a different order.

LimpLettice · 16/03/2019 08:47

LOVE Delilah. Lilah is a pretty shortening too. I really don't think either the song or the biblical connotations are so strong to rule it out if you love it. Would've used it for DD who has a v similar name but I'd already used it on a rabbit Grin

daisypond · 16/03/2019 08:49

Carina is pretty as well - that’s a nice name if you want something longer.
