Delilah?

I love the way this name sounds, and nickname of lilah.

What’s your thoughts?

I’m not religious at all so don’t really care about biblical connotations.

I love Delilah but my husband is keen on Cara.

I didn't think of any song until I started reading the thread (neither Tom Jones or plain white Ts). Rhiannon Ashlee (YouTuber) has a young daughter named Delilah and I have always thought it was lovely. I know a little girl named just Lilah as well.

I have a name with a formerly popular song attached to it. I'm in my 20s now and the name was very unusual when I was growing up, but it is becoming fairly popular with babies at the moment and no one seems to be singing the song anymore!

EEELA · 16/03/2019 17:56

The point of my post was that I very much doubt anyone would be singing Tom Jones by the time your daughter is a teenager. And even if they are, it isn't as bad as it sounds. It tends to be older people who sing the songs and they can easily be ignored with an eye roll by teenagers.

I'm Welsh and I love the name. There was a girl in Emmerdale called Delilah one of the Dingles. As for the song I have heard that a lot today with Wales winning the grand slam it's everywhere around here . But if you love the name and it suits her it's up to you. I myself think of Samson and Deliver lay before Tom Jones. Lisa Rinna of real housewives has a daughter that's a model that's called Delilah so perhaps it's popular in the U S A.

BlueEyedBengal · 16/03/2019 18:37

Delilah! damed auto spell showing me up again!

Bumblebeesmum · 16/03/2019 18:45

I quite like it

stellavisionandunderstanding · 16/03/2019 19:14

My boy is called Jude and only a few times has Hey Jude been serenaded to him, or to me, in his first year on Earth. Go for it!

teenybean · 16/03/2019 20:08

Love Delilah! It was between that & another name for dd2, the only reason she ended up with the other name is because she was emergency caesarean, so was handed to oh, when they asked him her name, he said he panicked a bit & said the other! (We both loved both names equally, so I was happy either way!)

Go for it, it's such a beautiful name! I love the plain white tees song, it was what made us fall in love with it, when we told people it was an option, everyone said how lovely it is, nobody (including v outspoken, v religious parents at ds school) mentioned the bible & only an old welsh friend said about Tom Jones!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/03/2019 22:34

I think it’s one of those names that is in fashion now but in a few years will be naff.
Like Betsy, Maisie, Ivy, Evelyn.

Othelloo · 16/03/2019 22:39

Hmmm that’s a great point greatduckcookery it might just be “in”
Now. However I do like that it’s been around for centuries, unlike more “newer” names. But looking at darkgreener it really has shot up suddently. Fast riser and quick fall??

But I can’t imagine it falling out of fashion because it sounds gorgeous...unless it suddently becomes downmarket or something.

I'd say it's a name that's being sung loudly in Cardiff tonight! Imagine being a real life Delilah in Wales on a big rugby day. You'd probably punch several drunken serenaders an hour. Justifiably.

The name itself is lovely with a nice cadence to it. It's just that pesky song...

Quintella · 16/03/2019 23:12

No idea why people care what Tom Jones does he’s nearly dead.

Let's hope poor old Tom isn't a Mumsnetter.

PepsiLola · 16/03/2019 23:23

I think of "hey there Delilah" by plain white tee's

And I love that song and love the name!!!

TatianaLarina · 16/03/2019 23:27

Some people have never been to Wales.

PCohle · 16/03/2019 23:28

The biblical connotations are horrible and it's certainly what would first occur to me.

And whilst I appreciate that the songs don't put you off OP they would definitely bother me.

Quintella · 16/03/2019 23:33

I have a friend called Cecilia. She gets 'Ceciiiiiiiiiiiiiilia yer breakin' my heart.........' on a surprisingly frequent basis.

JuniperNarni · 21/03/2019 21:21

You might get the song references once or twice and that's it.
If you love it, have it. I can assure you a majority of reactions are really positive, if you care what other peoples opinions on it are.
In the pharmacy collecting my daughters prescription one day, and they called her name out, a man stopped me and said "excuse me, is that her name? pointing at DD It's an absolutely beautiful name, I had to say something"
One person has said "oh like the Tom Jones song?" So positives outweighing negatives so far.

GrammerlyH · 22/03/2019 05:53

Love it and love the plain white t’s song

MercyBodle · 22/03/2019 08:09

I'm not keen on Delilah - feels fussy to me. I like Cara.

Flamingosnbears · 22/03/2019 09:25

Lyra is another to consider beautiful name.

VoyageInTheDark · 22/03/2019 09:44

I love it. I know my mum (70) would mention the Tom Jones song if we used it but I think more
of Plain White Tees and Florence and the Machine

Absurditi · 22/03/2019 09:50

I'm 23 and have no idea about the Tom Jones song Grin just the Plain White Ts... hey there Delilah.... Which is a nice song :) imo

Isitweekendyet · 22/03/2019 09:52

I adore both names but Lyla has always been my favourite girl name after the Oasis song.

Absolutely Lilah!

ChaosMoon · 22/03/2019 10:06

My DF could (and would) find a song to sing with the name of every new friend I or DSis brought into the house. No-one was bothered. You can find a reason for any name to be difficult/picked on/annoying, but it's rarely the end of the world.

I love Delilah. It's beautiful. And as an atheist, I also love the meaning "faithless one"!

PepsiLola · 22/03/2019 10:31

My daughters name is Alice, and so far only my FIL has mentioned who the f is Alice.

I was worried quite a lot of people would, but the only comments have been positive

ThanksItHasPockets · 22/03/2019 10:33

As long as you never intend to live in Wales.
