There are some names like Connie and Matilda.... Popular ones that I hate and just don't get.
Any names that are popular you just don't get?!

3 of my 4 dcs names have been listed! Shock

Moondancer73 · 12/03/2019 22:22

Quentin - just why would you inflict that on a child?!

My sons name isn't here, actually never seen it on any Mumsnet post

Tillygetsit · 12/03/2019 22:24

Sidney and all variations sounds HORRID.

Mmmhmmokdear · 12/03/2019 22:25

I really really hate Paul, Pauline & Paula. They just look so ugly written down.

SleepWarrior · 12/03/2019 22:26

Ruth may not be an objectively 'nice' name but I know about 5 and they are all truly lovely women. I don't think unpleasant Ruths exist, so on that basis the name feels nice to me.

JazzyBBG · 12/03/2019 22:33

Does anyone read The Unmumsy Mum ? "Fucking Ruth" 😂

emilybrontescorsett · 12/03/2019 22:43

I don't get the love for Arthur, Archie or Freddie type names.
Old man and Nick namey
Reminds me of Old Spice.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 12/03/2019 22:48

Ruth is plain and sensible but that's not to say Ruths are plain and/or sensible.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Dr Ruth the sexpert
Ruth Rendell

All quite formidable and impressive Ruths. I'm not sure there's ever been a glamorous Ruth?

I remember a line from Friends where Ross suggests Ruth as a name for their baby and Rachel says something like 'No. We're not having a 90 year old' Grin

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 12/03/2019 22:50

Oh wait, there's Ruth Negga. She's really bringing a bit of glam to the Ruth contingent.

Willow. I can't understand why someone would name their child that, nor do I understand why people always fawn over the name when anyone else uses it.

MadisonAvenue · 12/03/2019 22:51

Arthur
Teddy/Ted
Oliver
Rory
Harry

Margot
Olivia
Freya
Megan

Sophiathefortyfirst · 12/03/2019 22:51

Also the name Samuel/Sam. So unimaginative and like they can't think what to name their son so they just use that name.

RayaJambalaya · 12/03/2019 23:00

@howtotrainyourdragqueen
Mila is pronounced 'meela' and not 'myla' anyway. So whoever you know is pronouncing it right whether you like it or not

Also, I love your user name Grin

TildaTurnip · 12/03/2019 23:04

I like almost all of chocolatelog’s list!

Over recent years, I’ve become less and less uptight about names and whether they’re ‘made up’ or not etc. However, old man style names I really dislike still!

Oartistic · 12/03/2019 23:21

@RuthW I think Ruth is a good name. As is Florence! I know one, and she's gorgeous.

MaryBoBary · 12/03/2019 23:40

@piratehooker I could have written this list myself - my names on it! Just so dull and common. You end up in a class of children having Laura S, Laura H, Laura M etc.

Similarly boa names I hate include Daniel, James, Matthew.

Also hate the modern ones like Cayden and Chase.

And also stupidly names siblings. I know 2 brothers called Callum and Cameron. ITS BASICALLY THE SAME NAME!

MigThePig · 12/03/2019 23:41

I can't stand Alice, I just see the word "Lice" every time.

pineapplebryanbrown · 12/03/2019 23:41

I'm feeling the love for Jane, Catherine and Mary these days. I feel like I've been flower bombed by pretty floral names for too long. I'm even feeling Anne a bit.

Agree with a number of pp.

Anything that's a nickname as a full name - Alfie, Archie, Teddy, Albie, Tommy, plus names like Poppy.
Hyphenated anything.
Surnames as names.

My DS has a boring, top ten name that is never misspelt or mispronounced, will be timeless and see him through his whole life. It suits him too.

flumpybear · 13/03/2019 06:17

Boring names like
Jennifer
Jessica
Edward
Sarah

Ugly names
Edith
Ethel
Brian
Colin
Malcolm
Margot
Archie
Eric
Ruth

All chav names
All names with questionably spelling
All -Mae -Rae etc

blueskiesovertheforest · 13/03/2019 06:28

I don't like nicknames as full names, surnames as first names, names with invented spellings or hyphens, long and ridiculously ornate names and excessive extra frills on the end of classic, beautiful names to make them more frufru. Also improper nouns (rebel, apple, river) as names where the namers don't come from a culture where that's traditional.

I always wonder WTF parents were thinking if they give their child names with well known sinister or tragic associations (flowers associated with death, rememberence of mass slaughter and funerals, incredibly well known classic literary characters who murdered their siblings...)

However I love some of the names some people on this thread hate, there's clearly no point worrying about what people with a totally different set of criteria think!

Mumphineasandferbmadea · 13/03/2019 06:30

I named one of my children a name I hate because it meant something to their dad. It's grown on me now and I couldn't see them as anything else but I'm still not a fan.

Funnily out of my three dcs names his hasn't come up once on this thread.

cushioncuddle · 13/03/2019 06:31

Imogen and James just sound whiny and pretentious to me. I have no idea why they do though.

Happyandglorious · 13/03/2019 06:47

Evelyn -is awful, old, dull and grim
Every pronunciation, way of spelling it doesn't help.
It's an ugly old lady name. Dated and terrible
