There are some names like Connie and Matilda.... Popular ones that I hate and just don't get.
Any names that are popular you just don't get?!

Wallpaper names like Olivia, Isabelle, Emma, just generic and forgettable.

Very true. I know so many adult Steves for example. And so many young Jacks and Olivers...

Espressomartin · 12/03/2019 18:23

Emma. Can’t understand how it endures.

HighestMountains · 12/03/2019 18:24

DuchessOfPhysics there is a similar sort of name to that here in Scotland too Grin

whiskeysourpuss · 12/03/2019 18:24

I have 2 strikes so far - DD1 has a hyphenated name & DS has a surname for a first name (but it does give him that elusive unique name) thankfully DD2's name is generally approved of on Mumsnet or I'd be screwed Grin

I tend not to mind most names & don't give more than a passing Hmm at the more unusual names provided they're actual names & spelt correctly but the one name I cannot stand is Mirren - it just sounds awful to me can't quite put my finger on why but it just makes me recoil when someone says it.

happymummy12345 · 12/03/2019 18:26

Here we go, another what names do people hate thread.
Hey again as standard hyphenated names comes up. I have a hyphenated name, it's not a bad thing and beats a middle name I never ever use.

AuntVanya · 12/03/2019 18:26

Grace - it makes me think of 'grease' and 'scrape'

ParadiseLaundry · 12/03/2019 18:29

I honestly can't understand why people call their dd's Amelia. Yes, it sounds pretty but do people not look up the meaning of names before they use them? And it's so popular!

BeGoodTanya · 12/03/2019 18:33

George. It's such a fleshy, bovine kind of name.

MegaBat · 12/03/2019 18:34

@Ribbonsonabox I have a Teddy. He's 12 and a lovely, well behaved boy. He's not a campus rapist and he's not tried lager yet.

What offensive twatty things to say. Fine to say you hate the name - not fine to liken it to a rapist. You weirdo

Mrssnowflake · 12/03/2019 18:37

I don't get the appeal of Amelia either, or Olivia. I think they will be the Sarah /Nicola of their generation

grincheux · 12/03/2019 18:38

I dont like 'ee' where a 'y' would've done - Kaylee, Aimee etc.

I'm not a fan of Florence or Darcy either, I know they're popular and I know some lovely little girls with those names, I just don't like the way they sound. Not big on American sounding boys names like Tyler, Taylor etc either.

I really liked Riley for a girl because there's a bit of a family backstory there, but the name itself seems to have such chavvy connotations now that I couldn't bring myself to it ☹

howtotrainyourdragqueen · 12/03/2019 18:41

Boys -
Edward
Christian
Simon

So so wet

Girls

Milan I know someone who pronounces this Meela not M-eye-la and it sounds like some kind of medication or disease

howtotrainyourdragqueen · 12/03/2019 18:42

Mila not Milan!!

Also hate the Jackson /Hayden/Kayden type ones.

Bailey - just why?

Ghostwriter90 · 12/03/2019 18:48

happymummy12345 it is simply a thread to find out the names people just don't understand or like. Hate is a strong word.
Seeing as my middle name has been mentioned I'm not offended. It's only a discussion nothing serious about it.

lilabet2 · 12/03/2019 19:03

Gertrude - does anyone like it?
Ruth - sounds like 'Ruth-less'
Megan- makes me think of a witch- was there a children's book with a witch called 'Meg' or something?
Aaron- I have no idea why!
Jackson/Parker/Tyler/Taylor- common
Stacey/Kacey- as above
Kathleen/Colleen- eeeeee
Lee- as above
Ruby- subjectively dislike the sounds, especially 'roob'
Jamie - slightly common, just subjective
Edith- old fashioned
Constance- yuck
Chelsea- common

lilabet2 · 12/03/2019 19:05

Oh and Gemma- weirdly subjective- just not keen at all but think Emma is quite pretty so not sure it really makes any sense.

CryptoFascist · 12/03/2019 19:08

Tegan

CryptoFascist · 12/03/2019 19:14

@Petitprince, which names crop up the most often? I'm interested to know!

scandilover · 12/03/2019 19:18

Grace
Gracie
Evie
Lily
Rose
May
Ella

All the hyphenated combinations of the above names

Mila - pronounced 'Meela' which reminds me of 'mealworm' Confused

Boys -

Kayden
Kai
Jayden
Jace
Jackson
Hayden
Kingston

HogMother · 12/03/2019 19:25

My current issue is with xander. I get it’s short for Alexander, but it’s an x not a z, and without the first part of the name, it doesn’t make that sound. I’m sure someone will disagree with me, and that’s fine, it just doesn’t work for me.

itsnotso · 12/03/2019 19:28

I don't particularly dislike names, i just find them odd. Teddy has become highly popular, but I'm not sure it's a "lifetime" name. I cringe at the thought of sitting around a board table in five years time assessing Teddy's in a serious manner. Likewise, I really liked Romeo as a name, but didn't pick it for exactly the same reason as I don't like Teddy. DD2 has some very odd names in her year group. There's a Phoenix, Garrison, Boi (as in Boy), Axel and Jackson to make a few.

My DD1 has an incredibly popular now, DD2 you don't hear much of (although it hasn't appeared on this thread). I just think it's down to personal preference, I'm not offended if someone doesn't like my child's name.

pitterpatterbaby · 12/03/2019 19:32

Matilda
Riley
Jordon
Alfie
Archie
Charley
Harrison
Summer
Anything hyphenated!

User24689 · 12/03/2019 19:33

@hogmother, in English, X does make that sound, when at the start of a word. Eg. Xylophone, xenophobe. Also see girls name Xanthe. It's correct.

In fact, I have a related bugbear, the name Xavier, pronounced ex-zavier instead of Spanish 'havier' or anglicised 'zavier'. Embarrassingly common in oz. .

PippilottaLongstocking · 12/03/2019 19:35

I’ve thought of more
Verity (Ferrety)
Samantha (always pronounced samanfa)

Crushedvelvetcouch · 12/03/2019 19:45

Callum
Macie
Amelia
Mia
Liam
Lucas
Dylan
Molly
Jade
Jodie
Ella, all the common names really
But most of all Jonathon.....which isn't common but just horrid.

Strangely no issue with Jonathan Grin
