Is Ramona really terrible?

Due next month with a girl and our top choice of name is Ramona.

But I’ve just stumbled across another thread in which it was more or less completely panned Sad

Is it really that bad? What’s your impression of the name?

Why was it panned? I think it’s nice, strong but also feminine. Classless as well, would suit a SAHM, shop assistant, plumber, prime minister, anything. It’s a yes from me.

champagneduvin · 31/12/2018 16:40

Sorry I don’t like it

CherryValance · 31/12/2018 16:41

I like it. Probably because of the Ramona Quimby books I read when I was little

Shazafied · 31/12/2018 16:41

I LOVE RAMONA. DH doesn’t though so we can’t use it. I think it’s the coolest name ever!

Sarahandduck18 · 31/12/2018 16:43

It sounds like moaner which isn’t a good trait to be associated with.

If you love it use it as a middle name?

Janek · 31/12/2018 16:43

My niece is Ramona, and my brother and sil have been nothing but lauded for their choice of name. I call her quimby, of course, but it's a blimmin great name.

JennyHolzersGhost · 31/12/2018 16:44

I like it a lot but I suspect that it’s vwry surname dependent as to whether it works or not. If it goes with your surname then go for it ! Doesn’t matter what anyone thinks.

Thegirlhasnoname · 31/12/2018 16:45

DH really liked Ramona for our DD (born October) but it was one that I pulled the veto on! I like it as a general name but all I could think of was a) the potential for bullying nicknames in high school etc and b) I’m sure a newspaper called those who voted remain in Brexit Remoaners - the reference would be lost when she grew up but I just couldn’t get over it

Elfinablender · 31/12/2018 16:46

In the year of Brexit, is it a bit too close to Remoaner?

legalseagull · 31/12/2018 16:46

I love this name. Reminds me of the girl in the books as a child. It's unusual, but a proper name if you get what I mean

Elfinablender · 31/12/2018 16:46

Oh, xpost, I type too slow.

AfterSchoolWorry · 31/12/2018 16:47

Yeah, unfortunately it's just because it sounds like moaner.

MrsRyanGosling15 · 31/12/2018 16:47

Don't like it. I don't like the moan in it.

masterstef · 31/12/2018 16:47

I love it. My friend's dd is called Ramona.

villainousbroodmare · 31/12/2018 16:49

I have mixed feelings on it, as I adored Ramona Quimby but I find it a very plain and ungraceful set of letters.

mammmamia · 31/12/2018 16:49

I love it. Loved the Ramona Quimby books too

Juliet89 · 31/12/2018 16:50

Remoaner... yes I do see what you mean. Hopefully old news by the time she’s old enough to be teased about it though?

I’m glad some like it, I thought it was really strong sounding but also pretty and uncommon, but now I’m thinking should we go with something “safer”? I know it’s our opinion that matters etc. but I don’t want to land her with a name that people hate.

Cherry and Legal we love it (partly) because of the books too!

Makes me think of the Beverley Cleary character - I loved those books as a child. Ramona Quimby was a super young lass, so I have always liked the name.

My friend has a toddler called Ramona. I
Loved those books and still love them. She'd never heard of them though.

ThatPeskyElf · 31/12/2018 16:51

Don’t like it

Toddlerteaplease · 31/12/2018 16:52

If you have another girl you'd have to call her Beatrice.

Loopytiles · 31/12/2018 16:52

Too close to Remoaner.

NameChangeNugget · 31/12/2018 16:53

Really don’t like it

HarrietSchulenberg · 31/12/2018 16:53

Makes me think of the Black Francis song, and the Scott Pilgrim film. Lovely name, go for it.
